When we first meet someone, they form an opinion about us

and they decide whether they like us or trust us,

and something as simple as using the wrong greeting

Just the other day, I received an email from a student

First let's look at the formal greetings.

This is how you would greet someone at work,

generally, in formal conversation,

Hello.

Depending on the time of day,

good afternoon,

"Good afternoon" ( buon pomeriggio),

good evening.

"Good evening" ( buonasera)

If you've met the person before, you may say,

Se avete già incontrato prima la persona, potreste dire

it's nice to see you again

" It's nice to see you again" ( E' bello vederti di nuovo)

or, it's good to see you again.

oppure " It's good to see you again" ( E' bello rivederti)

If you haven't met them before, it would be nice to say,

Se non li avete mai incontrati prima, sarebbe carino dire

I'm pleased to meet you.

" I'm pleased to meet you" ( E' un piacere conoscerti).

Often when saying hello, we will follow it with an inquiry,

Spesso quando diciamo "ciao/salve", faremo seguire una domanda

for example, hello, how are you?

per esempio, " Hello, how are you?" (ciao, come stai?)

If you've met them before, you might say,

Se vi siete già incontrati potreste dire

how have you been?

"How have you been?" (Come stai? Come te la passi?

You could ask, how are things?

Potreste chiedere " How are things?" (come vanno le cose?)

Like how is everything in your life?

nel senso di " Come va la tua vita?"

We simply say, how are things?

Diciamo semplicemente" How are things?" (come vanno le cose?)

You may ask a more specific question

like, how is work?

Or if you know them well enough, you may say,

And ways you might respond to this question

in a formal setting are,

It's always polite to ask the question back.

You could say, I'm very well,

thank you for asking and you?

If they've asked about work, you could simply say,

Finally when your conversation has ended

and it's time to leave, you could simply say,

goodbye

or you might say, it was a pleasure to meet you

or, it was very nice to meet you.

If you're going to see them again some time in the future,

Se li vedrete di nuovo ad un certo punto in futuro

you could say, I'll see you soon.

potreste dire " I'll see you soon!" ( Ci vediamo presto).

If you know exactly when you're going to see them,

Se sapete esattamente quando vi rivedrete

you might say, I'll see you on Monday

potreste dire "I'll see you on Monday!" ( Ci vediamo lunedì)

or, I will see you at the event

oppure " I will see you at the event!" ( Ci vediamo all'evento)

or, I'll see you in the meeting.

o " I'll see you in the meeting!" ( Ci vediamo all'incontro)

Let's now look at these formal greetings in use.

Good morning.

"Buongiorno" ( Good morning)

Oh, hello, how are you?

"oh ciao, come stai?" ( Oh hello, how are you?)

I'm very well, thank you and you?

Not bad, thank you.

" Non male, grazie" (Not bad, thank you)

How's that project going?

" Come sta andando quel progetto?" ( How is that project going?)

It's progressing slowly.

" Sta procedendo lentamente" ( It's progressing slowly)

(elevator dinging)

I'll see you at 10:30.

" Ci vediamo alle 10.30" ( I'll see you at 10.30)

10:30?

"10.30?"

Your big presentation.

"Per la tua grande presentazione" ( Your big presentation)

Shit.

Now it's time to look at informal greetings,

this is how you would generally speak to someone

that you know on a personal level,

so your friends or your family members.

Basically everything is shortened and much more relaxed,

When making those all important inquiries,

the same rules apply, usually sentences are shortened

and much more relaxed, so instead of how are you?

You might hear, how are ya?

We also use more contractions, for example,

That doesn't make sense.

We also make some grammatical errors

English is so confusing,

but that is an acceptable informal way

to inquire about someone, how's things?

When responding to these types of questions

So I might answer this question with, fine, thanks, you?

And often in informal situations,

but words like fandabbydosey

ma parole come "fandabbydosey"

would not be suitable in an office situation.

Okay, let's see some of these informal greetings in use.

" Bene" ( Good)

I've got to go, it was nice to see ya.

" Devo andare. E' stato bello vederti" ( I've got to go. It was nice to see ya)

You too, bye.

" Anche per me. Ciao" ( You too, bye)
