An important English lesson - Live to Learn & Learn to Live - Starting your English learning Journey

There is a phrase in English

that states

that we all have

to start somewhere.

Put simply,

we all have a beginning

or many beginnings in life

from the moment you are born.

There are things to learn

and that learning process

never really ends.

As new challenges come our way,

there is always a new lesson

to learn from taking those

first steps as an infant

to finding out how to write

your last will and testament.

There is a lot of learning

to be done in between.

There are many ways

of describing a person

who is starting something new.

In education,

a new college

or university student

might be referred to

as a 'freshman'.

They are just entering

that stage of education.

In a skilled work environment.

A person who is learning

a certain type of trade

can be described as an 'apprentice'

or a 'trainee'.

In that situation.

They learn as they go along.

This is often done when teaching

practical skills.

Before learning something new

it is normal to feel nervous, apprehensive

unsure and reluctant.

There is always a certain

amount of uncertainty

at the beginning.

But as I always say

the more you do something

the better you become at it

and the better you become,

the more you will want to do it.

That is the basic principle

of learning anything,

including learning a new language,

such as English.

The journey of learning is often

described as a 'curve'.

You slowly gain knowledge

as you go along.

this is often referred to as the learning curve.

The gradual accumulation

of knowledge and ability is one

that happens over time

and quite often without you

being aware of it.

We absorb new information all the time

in our daily lives, often without

even realising it.

We can describe a person who

is starting something

as a 'newbie' or 'fresh'.

You might describe a person

who is unsure of

how to do something as green.

That person is at the start

of the learning process.

So it would be fair to say that

as well as the formal education

that most of us receive

in our younger years,

the journey through life

will always present new challenges

and new things

which must be learnt.

Think of any basic

skill that each one of us has,

such as cooking an egg,

tying your shoelaces.

Sending an email.

Driving a car,

at some point in your life.

you had to learn how to do one

or more of those things.

Many of the things we learn

in our childhood

come from our parents.

And of course, your teachers.

We learn so as to survive.

We learn so

we can take care of ourselves.

We learn through a

desire to be successful.

And of course, we live to learn

so we can learn to live.
