'Take for granted' - What does this English phrase mean? Speak English with Mr Duncan

Here is an interesting phrase that we use as a way of remembering how important something is.

To express the availability or value of something that we use in our day to day lives.

The phrase is ‘take something for granted’.

When we say that something is being taken for granted, we are expressing

how easy it is to forget the  importance of certain things.

For example, the clean water that comes from a tap. (faucet)

It is easily available.

One might forget just how important that thing is.

You simply turn the tap and there is the water.

The water appears without you even considering how lucky you are to have it.

We might say that you take it for granted.

You never think how lucky you are to be able to drink fresh, clean water straight from a tap.

Another thing you might take for granted is your health.

We often forget just how important  it is to have good health.

In fact, you only realise how important it is, when it starts to fade away.

You take the feeling of fitness for granted.

And yes, the same thing can be said for water.

You don't realise how important it is until it is no longer there.

It is common for people to  take things for granted.

Be it fresh water from the tap.

Money in the bank.

A close relative or friend.

Electricity,

or the food on your plate.

Quite often it is easy to take things for granted.

You assume that thing will always be there.
