Where in England are Mr Duncan and Mr Steve today? English Addict is on the road! 21st MARCH 2025

hi everybody this is Mr Duncan in England how  are you today are you okay I hope so are you  

feeling happy today I hope you are happy here  I am once again on my travels but I know what  

you're thinking Mr Duncan where are you well I've  decided to come to the coast the Yorkshire Coast  

in fact but it is not just me there is someone  else here here as well on a rather windy Beach we  

have some sunshine we even have tractors driving  around at high speed on the beach apparently they  

are old tractors some of them around 100 years  old according to a young lady that we just spoke  

to so here we are but where are we that is the big  question well to answer the question we have our  

special guest all the way from Much Wenlock which  just happens to be where I live as well it is the  

one the only Mr Steve hello here he is hello Mr  Duncan here we are it looks lovely and warm it  

looks like a typical sort of summer day on the  beach but it isn't it's probably the wind chill  

factor is probably about 2° so at the moment even  though it's about 10° the temperature 10 Celsius  

the actual real temperature is around about 3 or  4 because we have the cold wind but as I just said  

where are we well Mr Steve is going to tell us all  about the place we are staying in at at the moment  

we are at a place on the coast the Yorkshire  Coast a place called whitby whitby it's a famous  

uh seaside resort on the North Yorkshire Co well  sort of on the East North Yorkshire Coast so what  

does what does what does Wikipedia tell us about  it Wikipedia you mean what I already know well  

just just read it just read what's on the computer  well it's famous for fishing uh and also wailing  

in the old days back in the day when people used  to kill whales for their blubber uh they used to  

do that quite a lot so it's also famous for uh  Herring and wailing fleets as we said I had this  

morning for breakfast a smoked Kipper which is a  herring that has been smoked which is a delicacy  

you can eat in this area can I just say I did not  know that I thought kippers were actually kippers  

I thought there was a fish that swam in the ocean  called a Kipper so all I'm going to say now is Mr  

Duncan you silly sausage no kippers are the smoked  variety of that particular type of fish of the  

herring fish uh famous for the the bones having  that Herring bone pattern that you will can see in  

clothes sometimes you have a herring bone pattern  in for example a suit yes if you have a very  

expensive jacket some sort of jacket or Blazer  quite often they will be described as a herring  

bone jacket because of the shape of the stitching  it looks a little bit like a herring bone so other  

things that Whitby is famous for on the beach you  can search for whitby jet which is a black fossil  

it's black fossilized wood that used to be used  in jewelry in the 19th century really yes so we're  

going to hunt around Mr Duncan for some whitby jet  is it valuable no but they used to make jewelry  

out of it it's it's fossilized wood that has  somehow appeared on the beach here and uh people  

used to collect it and turn it into jewelry and  uh I can do that Mr Duncan I can make you a brooch  

you could start your own business find finding  bits of broken stones and shells on the beach  

and you could make your own jewelry what Steve  I found some I found some is that it that's look  

whitby jet so this is it everyone this is what  Steve just mentioned apparently it's everywhere  

because Steve just found some look at that I'll  turn that into so where you have to talk into the  

mic Steve okay I'll can put that set that into  a ring for Mr Duncan I just found that Mr Duncan  

just that second what is the chances of that  so there it is Whit be jet so this is the stuff  

that you can make jewelry out of I will keep this  as a M mmm ento it's cold it's not very easy to

Say Memento is something you keep to remind you  of a certain period of time so the other thing  

that it's for famous for here there is a we're  going to go to this later we're going to walk up  

199 steps really to a ruined Abbey which inspired  bram stoker to write Dracula this place so so this  

place is the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula  now I'm just wondering whether or nhs well Bram  

stoker stayed here uh um at some point in the  19th century and then wrote his novel based on  

the inspiration from the rather haunted and uh  well it is haunted but it's also ruined and we  

will film that and you can see that later talking  of haunted and ruined a lot of the people walking  

around Whitby also look a little bit haunted and  ruined I have to say this is a very interesting  

place I don't know why but if you ever come to a  seaside resort in England and we are now in the  

northeast of England on the Yorkshire Coast a very  interesting place in fact I might just move the  

camera slightly just to give you an idea because  we can't really see the sea so now I will show  

you the other view going behind me and now you  will really get the feeling of what we are doing  

today look at that the wind is blowing all around  us fortunately I have my lovely microphone so you  

won't hear the wind the other thing that Whitby is  famous for is Captain Cook really Captain Cook the  

famous explorer was he a pirate or something like  that did he sail the high seas swash buckling or  

did he do something special well well from my  memory Mr Duncan Captain Cook was not a pirate  

he was the famous explorer oh uh that explored all  over the world did he did he did he find anywhere  

in particular I think it was Australia Mr Duncan  Australia he discovered Australia how now what I  

want to know is how do you lose Australia it's  huge it takes you hours to fly from one side to  

the other so Captain Cook is also renowned and  well known here in whitby we also have Dracula  

I have to say it's a it's a rather interesting  selection of people who are connected to this  

part of the world it is Mr Duncan and we can see  I can see right from here the spooky ruined Abbey  

that was the inspiration for the book and we will  be going up there later as I said and filming it  

and hopefully you we we'll wait till it's done  Mr Duncan and the bats are flying around sure  

I'm not sure if I like the sound of that but just  to mention there are many interesting things here  

to see with that there are lots of fishing boats  you can even go out on a boat as well if you are  

feeling brave enough which I am not by the way I  am not feeling brave enough so I won't be doing it  

maybe Mr Steve will but I certainly won't so you  can take a boat trip you can watch the fisherman  

coming back they're collecting all of their Nets  and I think also they they fish for lobsters  

perhaps as well yes they've got baskets uh of  course we mustn't forget the other thing that  

any seaside resort is famous for in the UK and  that is fish and chips o yes there are lots of  

fish and chip shops the only thing we've noticed  is they are very very expensive and the seagulls  

are everywhere and uh there are signs everywhere  telling us not to feed the seagulls because people  

get attacked yeah you might not realize this but  seagulls can be quite ferocious Birds they will  

literally Peck your eyes out if you have a bag of  chips in front of you they will literally do that  

so there are warning signs all around saying  do not under any circumstances do not feed  

the seagulls because they will peck you on the  other hand we do need feeding because it's very  

cold uh probably as we've said about equivalent  to about 2° Centigrade with the wind chill factor  

it's also you would expect lovely fresh air by the  sea but uh we you wouldn't You' be surprised at  

the the pollution due to diesel engines from the  boats the boats and also we have those tractors  

that were driving around behind us earlier so I  have to say I'm trying to get some of the fresh  

sea air but I don't feel as if I'm getting much  of it anyway we are now going for a little Wonder  

around this beautiful area the coastal Resort of  Whitby this is Mr Duncan and Mr Steve we are going  

to have a little walk and maybe we will have a  cup of tea as well because between you and me I am  

absolutely freezing cold to be honest with you so  have you enjoyed it so far Steve so far it's been  

very enjoyable Mr Duncan we've had a nice little  break here in North Yorkshire and we've seen some  

spectacular views of the North Yorkshire Moors  uh which is very famous a part of England uh and  

where you can see all the Heather miles and miles  of Heather uh it's not in bloom at the moment  

we have to wait for the summer for that yes  it's still so unfortunately it's still spring  

time here anyway we are going now thank you Mr  Steve we are with you on Sunday by the way we
