Was it for a hen party?

No, it wasn't. - Oh, okay.

No. I went a lot when I was young,

Yeah, they're very tall,  they're pretty chilled out.

I don't know. They're just...

they're quite nice.

I like the Dutch.

I think they're very... I  think they're very progressive

And yet, quite old fashioned.  - Right? Interesting.

Et pourtant, assez démodés. - Droite? Intéressant.

Why'd... why'd you say old fashioned?

Pourquoi... pourquoi avez-vous dit démodé ?

Because they sort of, have their traditions

Parce qu'ils ont en quelque sorte leurs traditions

and their ways of doing things which  are quite traditional, you know.

et leurs façons de faire qui sont assez traditionnelles, vous savez.

I thought you were gonna say because  they also have a royal family?

Je pensais que tu allais dire parce qu'ils ont aussi une famille royale ?

Oh no, I'm not bothered about that.

Oh non, ça ne me dérange pas.

But yeah, that could be part of it, yeah.

So I would say they're, in my experience,

usually quite outgoing,  friendly, generous. - Yeah.

Some people might say they're kind of,

a confident bunch of people. - Okay.

Willing to kind of, share  their thoughts and opinions.

What you think of the Dutch people, that you met?

Their English is incredible. - Yeah.

I once had a very amusing episode,

Une fois, j'ai eu un épisode très amusant,

where I er... I went into the street

où je euh... Je suis allé dans la rue

and I was trying to find how to get from A to B,

et j'essayais de trouver comment aller de A à B

'cos I was working there.

, parce que je travaillais là-bas.

And I went up to this guy,

he was sort of, smartly seated and I said;

''do you speak English?'' And he said;

As in; of course I speak English!

Are there any stereotypes that  you had about the Dutch people,

Y a-t-il des stéréotypes que vous aviez sur les Néerlandais

before you went there? And how  did they kind of, match up?

Oh yeah! So stereotypes;

Oh ouais! Alors stéréotypes;

cycling, flat surfaces...

And the people?

The hurdy furdy furdy...

Et les gens ?

La prononciation hurdy furdy furdy...

pronunciation, the people being,

, les gens étant,

a weird combination between quite staid and

une combinaison étrange entre assez guindé

stand-offish and then incredibly free and open

et distant, puis incroyablement libre et ouvert

and mostly naked and sexual.

et surtout nu et sexuel.

Before you went there, did you have a stereotype?

Avant d'y aller, aviez-vous un stéréotype ?

Of what Dutch people would be like

À quoi ressembleraient les Néerlandais

and how did that kind of, compare?

et comment cela se compare-t-il ?

I think the only stereotype before I went,

Je pense que le seul stéréotype avant que j'y aille,

was the Austin Powers, freaky-deaky Dutch guy,

c'était celui d'Austin Powers, un Hollandais bizarre,

but I can't remember who his character was.

mais je ne me souviens plus qui était son personnage.

Goldmember. - was it Gold... yeah!

membre d'or. - était-ce de l'or... ouais !

I don't know if that was the er...

Je ne sais pas si c'était la euh...

the most fairest representation.

Well, there's that thing about,

Eh bien, il y a ce truc,

you know, ''going Dutch'' and all that.

vous savez, "devenir néerlandais" et tout ça.

So they could be quite mean, in a sense.

Ils pourraient donc être assez méchants, dans un sens.

You go out to a restaurant  or something and it's like;

Vous sortez au restaurant ou quelque chose comme ça et c'est comme ;

Well, you had the drink...  - That's not being mean,

Eh bien, vous avez bu... - Ce n'est pas méchant,

that's just being... - Yeah but, ''going Dutch''

c'est juste... - Ouais, mais "devenir hollandais",

is when you share the cost of a meal.

c'est quand vous partagez le coût d'un repas.

You know, they haven't got  that English thing about,

Vous savez, ils n'ont pas ce truc en anglais,

the amount to pay, which is good.

le montant à payer, ce qui est bien.

It's part of their progressiveness really.

Cela fait vraiment partie de leur progressivité.

But, it could come over as slightly mean.

Mais cela pourrait sembler légèrement méchant.

There were... I mean, there's a stereotype that,

Il y avait... Je veux dire, il y a un stéréotype que,

I think the Brits have, that the...

je pense que les Britanniques ont, que le...

that never bothers me, but the Brits say;

qui ne me dérange jamais, mais les Britanniques disent ;

''Oh, they're very direct'' and I say;

''Oh, ils sont très directs'' et je dis;

well fine, I'm happy with direct.

bien bien, je suis content du direct.

And did that match up? - Oh completely, yeah.

Et est-ce que ça correspondait ? - Oh complètement, ouais.

But I was completely fine with that,

Mais j'étais complètement d'accord avec ça,

it makes life a lot easier.

ça rend la vie beaucoup plus facile.

If you're asking directions; direct.

I don't know, asking a question.

Then, you get a direct answer,  I'm... I'm fine with that, yeah.

Ensuite, vous obtenez une réponse directe, je suis... ça me va, oui.

Non of this, beating around the bush that the...

And, you know, if... if somebody bumps into you,

they say, ''sorry!'' They say;

''Oh, I'm terribly sorry!'' Sort of, you know,

"Oh, je suis terriblement désolé !" En quelque sorte, vous savez,

I'm not sure about whether  I should say sorry or not.

It's very sort of, straightforward.

Just... just by being a bit  more laid back and chilled out.

anything from the Netherlands  that would improve like,

well, I don't know about these days,

because politically, it's changed a great deal.

I'd say, it's not the same place  it used to be 20 years ago,

to be honest. But, what I  largely enjoyed about is...

is it's very, very friendly,  very open, very welcoming.

We are quite conservative in our thinking here,

I get there's much more of a  sense of equality and equity,

I've been to Sweden; sarcasm  doesn't work, don't get it.

Occasionally, they find it funny, 'cos they're;

''oh, this is the English sense  of humour, it's so amusing''.

They quite like. Where Dutch, it's the same.

Ils aiment bien. Où néerlandais, c'est la même chose.

We've made the wrong decision  by moving out of Europe,

Nous avons pris la mauvaise décision en quittant l'Europe,

in terms of (the) European Union.

en ce qui concerne (l') Union européenne.

We could be more like the Netherlands,

Nous pourrions ressembler davantage aux Pays-Bas,

by still being in the European Union.

But that's a kind of... that's a  bit too political for this er...

So I think they're kind  of, again, generalisations.

But, you know, kind of,

British are perhaps more reserved. - Right.

Bit kind of, claim to be a  bit shyer, in that respect.

and perhaps being a bit more outgoing and kind of,

approachable, would be one thing.
