Asking questions and giving answers are the basics of great conversation,

طرح الأسئلة و إعطاء الأجوبة, هي أساسيات المحادثة الرائعة

in English and in any language!

في الإنجليزية و في كل لغة

But, are you doing it correctly in English?

لكن, هل تفعل هذا بشكل صحيح في الانجليزية؟

Many of my students can get by, they can get their message across

even without the correct structure word order or intonation

حتى من دون النظام الصحيح لترتيب الكلمة او التجويد.

But, it makes for a very bumpy awkward conversation!

so that they flow smoothly, clearly, and automatically!

It stands for question and answers.

و هي اختصار "أسئلة و أجوبة".

You might have heard it somewhere before, Q&A.

من المحتمل انك سمعت في مكان ما من قبل عن Q&A

First up, let's review question structure in English.

أولاً, دعونا نراجع هيكل السؤال باللغة الإنجليزية.

Now, the good news is that English questions are fairly consistent

الآن، الخبر السار هو أن الأسئلة الإنجليزية واضحة إلى حد ما

and easy to follow because they have a clear structure.

وسهل تتبعها لأن بنيتها واضحة.

There are four main parts that you need to keep in mind.

هناك أربعة أجزاء رئيسية تحتاج الى ان تتذكرها.

The first part: question words.

الجزء الأول: كلمات السؤال.

Then number two is your auxiliary verb

ثم الرقم الثاني هو الفعل المساعد الخاص بك

or your helping verb: be, do or have.

أو الفعل المساعد الخاص بك: be,do,have.

It can also be a modal auxiliary verb like can or will or should.

ويمكن أيضا أن يكون الفعل المساعد الشرطي مثل : can, will, should.

Thirdly, you need your subject.

ثالثا، تحتاج الموضوع الخاص بك.

I, you, we, etc.

أنا، أنت، نحن، الخ.

And your main verb, any verb!

والفعل الرئيسي الخاص بك، أي فعل!

These are the four things that you need

هذه هي الأشياء الأربعة التي تحتاج إليها

and you need them in that order, every time!

وكنت في حاجة إليها في هذا الترتيب، كل مرة!

Okay let's try with some examples, ready?

حسنا دعونا نحاول مع بعض الأمثلة، مستعدين؟

question word,

كلمة السؤال،

auxiliary,

المساعدة،

subject,

موضوع،

main verb!

What do you like about it?

ما الذي يعجبك في ذلك؟

question word,

How long have you been living there?

منذ متى وأنت تعيش هناك؟

question phrase,

عبارة السؤال،

auxiliary verb,

Okay, so what about this type of question?

حسنا، ماذا عن هذا النوع من الأسئلة؟

Do you live in England?

هل تعيش في انكلترا؟

In this question we don't have a

في هذا السؤال ليس لدينا

question word but we do have all of the other parts of the English question structure.

كلمة السؤال ولكن لدينا كل من الأجزاء الأخرى من بنية السؤال

We don't have the question word but we do have the auxiliary verb (do),

ليس لدينا كلمة السؤال ولكن لدينا الفعل المساعد (Do)،

the subject (you) and the main verb (live).

الموضوع (أنت) والفعل الرئيسي (يعيش).

It's as simple as that, every time!

انها بسيطة مثل ذلك، في كل مرة!

This type of question is perfectly acceptable too.

هذا النوع من السؤال هو مقبول تماما أيضا.

You don't need to have a question word.

أنت لا تحتاج إلى كلمة السؤال.

There are two types of questions in English,

هناك نوعان من الأسئلة باللغة الإنجليزية،

closed questions, the questions which start with an auxiliary verb

أسئلة مغلقة، الأسئلة التي تبدأ مع الفعل المساعد

and open questions,

والأسئلة المفتوحة،

questions which start with a question word or a question phrase.

الأسئلة التي تبدأ بكلمة السؤال أو عبارة السؤال.

Keep that in mind for a few minutes.

Questions that start with an auxiliary verb or a helping verb

الأسئلة التي تبدأ بفعل مساعد أو فعل مساعدة

are closed questions because they require just a simple answer,

هي أسئلة مغلقة لأنها تتطلب مجرد إجابة بسيطة،

yes or no.

نعم أو لا.

The detail is not really important.

التفاصيل ليست مهمة حقا.

Do you like the soup?

هل تحب الحساء؟

No, I don't.

لا أنا لا.

Can you help me for a minute?

يمكنك مساعدتي لمدة دقيقة؟

Yeah, I can.

نعم استطيع.

Have you been to Italy?

هل كنت في إيطاليا؟

No, I haven't.

لا، لم أفعل ذلك.

Are you enjoying the movie?

هل تتمتع الفيلم؟

Yeah, I am.

نعم انا.

Another good tip here is the connection between the question and the answer.

نصيحة جيدة أخرى هنا هي العلاقة بين السؤال والجواب.

See how the answer directly responds to the information in the question.

أنظر كيف الإجابة ترد بشكل مباشر على المعلومات الموجودة في السؤال.

Are you?

أنت؟

Yeah, I am.

نعم انا.

No, I'm not.

Have you?

هل؟

No I haven't.

Yeah, I have.

There are lots of patterns in English questions,

هناك الكثير من الأنماط في الأسئلة الإنجليزية،

so if you start paying attention to the detail, you'll really be able to improve your grammar.

Questions that start with a question word are open questions and they're

questions that require more information in the answer.

Not just 'Have you been to Italy?'

ليس فقط "هل كنت في إيطاليا؟"

But, 'When did you go?'

ولكن، "متى ذهبت؟"

I went last year!

ذهبت العام الماضي!

How long did you stay there?

كم من الوقت قضيت هناك؟

I stayed there for 3 months.

بقيت هناك لمدة 3 أشهر.

Why did you go there?

لماذا ذهبت إلى هناك؟

I went to study and learn Italian!

A good rule of thumb is that closed questions are great for confirming information about people.

هنالك قاعدة جيدة وهي إن الأسئلة المغلقة عظيمة في تأكيد المعلومات عن الناس

Do you live there?

هل تعيش هناك؟

Once you confirm the answer then

بمجرد تأكيد الجواب ثم

you can use open questions to learn more about them,

يمكنك استخدام الأسئلة المفتوحة لمعرفة المزيد عنهم،

their experiences, their opinions,

تجاربهم، آرائهم،

their recommendations.

How long does it take to drive there?

What's the best restaurant to try?

What's the weather like at this time of year?

What's the best thing about living there?

ما هو أفضل شيء عن العيش هناك؟

Again, let me show you that the question

مجددا، اسمحوا لي ان اريكم إن

structure always stays the same,

هيكل السؤال يبقى دائما نفسه،

question word,

كلمة السؤال،

auxiliary verb,

فعل مساعد،

subject,

الموضوع،

main verb.

الفعل الأساسي.

So, the most obvious difference between

لذا، فإن الفرق الأكثر وضوحا بين

open and closed questions is the question word.

أسئلة مفتوحة ومغلقة هي كلمة السؤال.

But there is another noticeable difference and that's intonation.

ولكن هناك فرق ملحوظ آخر وهذا التجويد.

Intonation is the way that your voice rises

التنغيم هو الطريقة التي يرتفع صوتك

and falls when we speak.

ويسقط عندما نتكلم.

The intonation of your question depends on the type of question that it is.

يعتمد تجويد سؤالك على نوع السؤال الذي هو عليه.

For closed questions, so questions with auxiliary verbs,

للأسئلة المغلقة، لذلك الأسئلة مع الأفعال المساعدة،

your intonation goes up at the end.

التنغيم الخاص بك يرتفع في النهاية.

Do you like them?

هل يعجبونك؟

Are you hungry?

هل انت جائع؟

Open questions that require more information in the answers

افتح الأسئلة التي تتطلب المزيد من المعلومات في الإجابات

usually go down in intonation.

وعادة ما تنخفض في التجويد.

Why do you like them?

What do you want to eat?

ماذا تريد أن تأكل؟

An important thing to think about all the time,

but especially when you're trying to use questions correctly,

is making sure that your subject

and your auxiliary verb match.

When you're using an auxiliary verb in English questions,

and in regular sentences too,

your main verb stays in the infinitive form

and your auxiliary verb needs to change,

والفعل المساعد الخاص بك يحتاج إلى تغيير،

depending on the subject and also the tense.

For example:

فمثلا:

Do you live in London?

هل تعيش في لندن؟

The auxiliary verb matches the subject.

الفعل المساعد يطابق هذا الموضوع.

If our subject changes to 'he'

إذا تغير موضوعنا إلى 'هو'

then we need to change our auxiliary verb to match it.

إذن علينا تغيير الفعل المساعد حتى يطابقه.

Does he live in London?

هل يعيش في لندن؟

Have they tried it?

هل حاولوا ذلك؟

Has she tried it?

هل حاولت ذلك؟

Where was he living before?

أين كان يعيش من قبل؟

Where were they living before?

أين كانوا يعيشون قبل؟

So, the relationship between the auxiliary verb and the subject

لذلك، العلاقة بين الفعل المساعد والموضوع

is one that you need to pay close attention to

هي التي يجب ان تنتبه لها

Now, I want to warn you,

الآن، أريد أن أحذركم،

in real conversation things get loose,

في محادثة حقيقية الأمور تصبح رخوة،

fast, and sometimes grammatically incorrect.

سريع، وأحيانا غير صحيحة قواعديا.

Most native English speakers can be a bit cheeky

معظم المتحدثين الأم للإنكليزية يكونون غير مضبوطين

and a bit lazy at times, especially when they're speaking!

و كسولين قليلا في بعض الأحيان، خصيصا عندما يتحدثون!

So, you need to listen for key pieces of information

لذلك، تحتاج إلى الاستماع لقطع رئيسية من المعلومات

plus intonation and try to just go with the flow.

One very common example of this is with closed questions,

ones that start with an auxiliary verb,

they can be shortened!

So, the question 'Do you want to get something to eat?'

can become 'Want to get something to eat?

يمكن أن تصبح "تريد الحصول على شيء لتناول الطعام؟

The intonation is important here so that you know that it's a question.

التجويد مهم هنا حتى نعرف أنه سؤال.

The intonation goes up because it's a closed question.

التجويد يرتفع لأنه سؤال مغلق.
