favourite English adjectives with you!

اكتر كلمات نوصف بيها المفضله عندي

To be expressive, to show emotion and feeling and to sound more interesting in English,

عشان تعرف تعبر اكتر عن نفسك و عن شعورك و تبقي احسن في النجليزي

then you need to start pushing your vocabulary further.

فلازم تكتر محصولك من الكلمات

Saying something is "nice" or "beautiful" is good…

لما تقول حاجه nice=لطيفه beautiful=جميلة ده حاجه مش معبره اوي

But adjectives like magnificent, remarkable or inspirational are so much more meaningful!

لكن الكلمات زي magnificent= كبير remarkable=ملحوظ inspirational=ملهم تحسهم يعبروا اكتر عنك

So let's talk about adjectives. They're a big group of words in English!

فخلينا نتكلم عن الكلمات الوصفيه ديه دول جزء كبير جدا من الكلمات في الانجليزي

And they're used to describe or to give more information about a noun.

الadjectives=كلمات وصفية بنستخدمها في الوصف لnoun=الاسم

Word order is important with adjectives.

ترتيب الجمله مهم جدا مع الكلمات الوصفيه

When used next to a noun, the adjective comes before the noun!

لو مثلا الكلمه الوصفيه ديه جمب الاسم علطول يبقي هتبقي قبل الاسم

Like this:

زي كده

A or an with an adjective plus a noun.

"An incredible story."

قصة رائعه

This structure is really common too!

و التركيبه ديه برضه بتستخدم علطول

A noun plus the be verb plus an adjective.

الاسم +الفعل +الكلمة الوصفيه

"Her recommendations were excellent."

"اقتراحتها كانت ممتازه "

So today, I want to share eight of my favourite adjectives with you,

فانهارده هكلمكوا عن التمن كلمات وصفيه المفضله عندي

to help you build your vocabulary when you're describing things - or places!

عشان اساعدكوا تكنوا جمل لما تيجوا توصفوا اي حاجه او مكان

Now I’m including both positive and negative adjectives so

هكلمكوا عن بعض لكلمات الايجابيه و السلبيه

when things are good, when things are bad and also neutral adjectives,

لما الحالة تبقي كويسه و لما تبقي وحشة ولما تبقي عاديه

when things are OK, but nothing special.

اما تبقي كويسه بس مفيهاش حاجه ممميزه

All of the adjectives that I’m going to talk about can be used to describe people too

مش لازم توصف اشياء و امكن بس ممكن اشخاص كمان

but they're commonly used to describe places and things - so that's what we're focusing on today!

بس هما عادة بنستعملهم في وصف الاشياء و الاماكن - و هو ده اللي هنركز عليه انهارده

Magnificent. Magnificent.

هائله

Can you hear where the stress is? Magnificent.

سامعبن بنضغط فين

You can use this adjective when something is very impressive or it's very inspiring or very beautiful.

ممكن نستعمل الكلمه ديه لما تكون حاجه مبهجة اوي او ملهمه او جمياه اوي

When it's used with people it can also mean that they are very skillful.

لما نستعملها مع اشخاص بتكون معناها موهوب او متمكن

Now see how all of those examples use "very" in front of regular adjectives?

شايفين في كل الامثله ديه بنستعمل كلمه very =جدا اودامها

That’s because magnificent is an extreme adjective, a really strong adjective.

ده بسبب انا magnificent كلمه وصفيه قويه جدا

So you can use it to add emphasis to your emotions.

فبنستعملها عشان نزود تاكيد علي تعبيرنا ده

For example: "That meal was magnificent.

مثال "الاكله كانت هايله"

I haven’t eaten that well in a long time!"

انا ما اكلتش في الحلاوه ديه بقالي وقت طويل

"We woke up at sunrise and had a magnificent view over the Indian Ocean."

"صحينا وقت الشروق و شفنا منظر هايل قدام المحيط الهندي "

"You were magnificent!" (That's talking about your performance)

"انت كنت هايل" لما اتكلم عن اداء شخص

Remarkable.

لافت للنظر

RemArkable. Hear that stress?

سامعين الضغط علي الكامه

Use this adjective when something surprises you or it impresses you!

استخدم الكلمه ديه لما حاجهن تفاجأك او تبسطك

And it’s worth commenting on, because it's unique or it's unusual.

و هي تستحق انك نعلق عليها عشان هي فريده و غير معتاده

For example. "The Guggenheim is a remarkable building."

مثال "الالجوجنيم مني لافت للنظر"

"It is remarkable that the pyramids in Egypt were built thousands of years ago!"

"حاجه لافته للنظر ان الاهرامات اتبنوا من الاف السنين!!"

"After the car accident, he made made a remarkable recovery."

بعد حادثه العربيه اتحسن بشكل لافت للنظر

"His presentation was remarkable - it was unlike any of the others at the conference."

"العرض بتاعه كان لافت لنظر كان مختلف عن العروض التانيه في الاجتماع

Remarkable can also be used to describe a person, when they're unlike anyone else that you've ever met.

ممكن برضه نستعملها في وصف اشخاص لما يكونوا مختلفين عن اي حد انت قابلته قبل كده

Or they've done something really inspiring, they're really clever.

او عملوا حاجه ملهمه او هما ناصحين

Like "She really is a remarkable woman."

مثلا " هي سيده لافته للنظر

The opposite is unremarkable - and it's used when something is not special or unique at all.

لاعكس بقي غير لافت للنظر ديه بنستعملها لما نتكلم عن حاجه مش مميزه خالص

Obvious. Another good one.

(واضح )كلمه حلوة بردو

Obvious. The stress is always important with adjectives

الضعط علي الكلمه مهم جدا في الكلمات ديه

because pushing down on that stressed syllable helps you to emphasise the word

عشان ده بيساعدك تاكد الكلمه

and to make the meaning stronger. Obvious.

و يخلي المعني اقوي

If something is "obvious", it’s really clear and it's easy to understand.

لما حاجه تكون "واضحه" فهي سهله انك تفهمها و واضحه

"It’s obvious that he’s in love with you!"

"واضح جدا انه بيحبها"

"It was obvious that she didn’t want to be at the party."

"كان واضح اوي ان الحفله ديه كانت تقيله علي قلبها و مكنتش عايزه تحضرها "

(Her behaviour, her body language, her tone of voice.. it was clear that she didn’t want to be there)

(من سلوكها مثلا او طريقه كلامها عرفنا انها واضح انها مكنتش عايزه تيجي

"Ooops, that was an obvious mistake!"

"يا نها ابيض ده كان غلطه و اضحه اوي

Acceptable.

مقبول

Now this is a very neutral adjective, but it's a useful one!

ديه كلمه عاديه لا ايجابيه اوي ولا سلبيه

It’s used when something is reasonable for what most people would think.

بنستخدمها لما تكون حاجه معقوله لمعظم الناس

You know, it’s generally accepted or allowed.

حاجه مقبوله عامة

So for example. "These days, flexible working hours are becoming more acceptable to employers."

مثلا "الايام ديه العمل اللي مش بساعات معينه بقي مقبول عند الموظفين

"Please let me know if the fees are acceptable. If you're OK with it."

طلوسمحت عرفني لو المبلغ ده مقبول معاك

The opposite is unacceptable. So that’s a good way to start building on your vocabulary

العكس طبعا غير مقبول , و ديه الطريقه بقي يا جدعان اللي نعرف نبني بيها محصول كلمات

- learning the opposites of these adjectives. Unacceptable.

اننا نعلم عكس الكلمات ديه

"My hotel room was filthy! It's unacceptable!"

"اوضه الفندق كانت رديئه ديه غير مقبوله خالص

Impossible. Impossible.

مستحيل

If something is impossible, it can’t be done

لما حاج ه تبقي مستحيله يبقي مستحيل تتعمل

OR it's extremely difficult to do.

او حاجه صعبه جدا تتعمل

"No, it’s impossible. It can't be done!"

"انت بتهرج با اخي !!!! ده مستحيل ,ده مينفعش يتعمل "

"My boss gave me an impossible task."

"الرئيس فيي الشغل ادانه مهمه مستحيله "

"Adam is so badly behaved, it’s impossible to take him anywhere!"

"ادم ده ولد قليل الادب, ده مستحيل تاخده معاك اي حته

"It’s impossible to become fluent in English, without practising with English speakers!"

"مستحيل تبقي ماهر في النجليزي من غير ما تمرسوه مع حد بيتكلم انجليزي"

Significant. Significant. Now this adjective can be used to say that something

is important or large.

مهمه او كبيره

And it’s often used to describe a change that's very noticeable.

ده ممكن تستخدمها لما تشوف تغيير ملاحظ اوي

For example. "It’s a significant building in the city."

مثلا "ده مبني مهم و كبير في البلد "

"Significant changes have taken place since you left."

تعييرات كبيره حصلت من ساعت من سبت المكان"

"There has been a significant increase in population over the last 10 years."

"ده كان فيه زياده سكانيه كبير و مهم في العشر سنين اللي فاتوا

Ridiculous. Ridiculous. Hear the stress when I exaggerate?

سخيف

“That’s ridiculous!” Dic-diculous.

ده سخيف !!!!

Also notice how this ‘u’ - is pronounced as /j/

لاحظوه ال U بتتنطق ازاي

NOT ri-di-coo-les but ri-dic-oo-les

Now this is a great adjective - it can be used to describe people too, but you need to be

ديه كلمه مهمه ممكن تستخدما مع اشخاص برده

careful with your facial expression and your tone because it can be a negative thing.

بس لازم تاخد لاك من تعبير وشك و صوتكو تتاخد علي انها شتيمه

It can mean silly or stupid.

ممكن يكون معناها سخيف و غبي

"That’s a ridiculous idea."

"ديه فكره سخيفه "

"You look ridiculous. Take it off!"

"شكلك سخيف بالبتاعه ده اقلعوه

"It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"

"حاجه سخيفه اوي ان المحات بتقفل الساعه خمسه "

But it can also mean that something is crazy and it should be laughed at.

بس ممكن بردوا تبقي بمعني حاجه مجنون و تضحك

Same sentences again. "That’s a ridiculous idea!"

تاني " ديه فكره سخيفه اوي

"Pfft! You look ridiculous!"

"شكلك سخيف اوي

"It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"

Did you pay attention to the difference there?

خدتوا بالكوا من الاختلاف هنا

The tone and facial expression are really important so that the listener can understand what you mean.

بس اهم حاجه انا بقولكوا اهوه ان تاخد الك من تعبي وشك و الطريقه اللي بتقولها بيها لحسن تتفهم غلط

Complicated. Complicated. Complicated.

معقده او صعبه

Ooo this is such a good adjective to learn and use well!

بصوا بقي دي من احلي الكلمات اللي ممكن تستعملها

You can use it when something is difficult to do, like you know, it’s hard.

ممكن تستخدمها لما يكون حاج ه صعبه تعملها

Or it’s difficult to understand.

او صعب تفهمها

Or it could be difficult to deal with or to manage.

او حاجه صعبه تتعامل معاها او تديرها

"The directions he gave were really complicated."

"الاتجاهات للمكان اللي اتدهوني كانت مقده اوي"

"They’ve been going out for years, but they have a complicated relationship."

"بقالهم سنين بيخرجوا مع بعض و مع كده علاقتهم صعبه اوي

So, they are my favourite adjectives for describing things in English!

دول بقي الكلات الوصفيه المفضله عندي في الانجليزي
