To be expressive, to show emotion and feeling and to sound more interesting in English,

then you need to start pushing your vocabulary further.

Saying something is "nice" or "beautiful" is good…

But adjectives like magnificent, remarkable or inspirational are so much more meaningful!

So let's talk about adjectives. They're a big group of words in English!

Quindi parliamo di aggettivi. Sono un grande gruppo di parole in inglese!

And they're used to describe or to give more information about a noun.

E sono usate per descrivere o dare più informazioni riguardo ad un nome.

Word order is important with adjectives.

L'ordine della parola è importante con gli aggettivi.

When used next to a noun, the adjective comes before the noun!

Quando usato vicino ad un nome, l'aggettivo viene prima del nome!

Like this:

Così:

A or an with an adjective plus a noun.

A o an, con un aggettivo, più il nome.

"An incredible story."

"An incredible story."

This structure is really common too!

Anche questa struttura è davvero comune!

A noun plus the be verb plus an adjective.

Un nome, più il verbo essere, più un aggettivo.

"Her recommendations were excellent."

"Her recommendations were excellent."

So today, I want to share eight of my favourite adjectives with you,

Oggi, voglio condividere con te otto dei miei aggettivi preferiti,

to help you build your vocabulary when you're describing things - or places!

Now I’m including both positive and negative adjectives so

when things are good, when things are bad and also neutral adjectives,

when things are OK, but nothing special.

All of the adjectives that I’m going to talk about can be used to describe people too

but they're commonly used to describe places and things - so that's what we're focusing on today!

Magnificent. Magnificent.

Can you hear where the stress is? Magnificent.

You can use this adjective when something is very impressive or it's very inspiring or very beautiful.

Puoi usare questo aggettivo quando qualcosa è molto impressionante o molto stimolante o molto bella.

When it's used with people it can also mean that they are very skillful.

Quando è usato con le persone può anche significare che sono davvero capaci.

Now see how all of those examples use "very" in front of regular adjectives?

Ora vedi come tutti questi esempi hanno 'very' davanti all'aggettivo?

That’s because magnificent is an extreme adjective, a really strong adjective.

Questo perchè magnificent è un aggettivo estremo, un aggettivo davvero forte.

So you can use it to add emphasis to your emotions.

Quindi puoi usarlo per aggiungere enfasi alle tue emozioni.

For example: "That meal was magnificent.

Per esempio: "Quel pasto era magnifico.

I haven’t eaten that well in a long time!"

Non mangiavo così bene da tanto tempo!"

"We woke up at sunrise and had a magnificent view over the Indian Ocean."

"Ci svegliammo all'alba con una magnifica vista sull'Oceano Indiano."

"You were magnificent!" (That's talking about your performance)

"Sei stato magnifico!" (Si parla della tua esibizione)

Remarkable.

Remarkable. ( notevole, eccezionale )

RemArkable. Hear that stress?

Remarkable. Senti l'enfasi?

Use this adjective when something surprises you or it impresses you!

Utilizza questo aggettivo quando qualcosa ti sorprende o ti impressiona!

And it’s worth commenting on, because it's unique or it's unusual.

E vale la pena commentarlo, perchè è unico o inusuale.

For example. "The Guggenheim is a remarkable building."

Per esempio. "Il Guggenheim è una struttura notevole."

"It is remarkable that the pyramids in Egypt were built thousands of years ago!"

"è notevole che le piramidi in Egitto siano state costruite millenni fa!"

"After the car accident, he made made a remarkable recovery."

"Dopo l'incidente stradale, ha avuto un notevole ricovero."

"His presentation was remarkable - it was unlike any of the others at the conference."

"La sua presentazione era notevole - non era come quella di nessun'altro alla conferenza."

Remarkable can also be used to describe a person, when they're unlike anyone else that you've ever met.

Remarkable può anche essere utilizzato per descrivere una persona, quando non è come nessun'altra che tu abbia mai conosciuto.

Or they've done something really inspiring, they're really clever.

O quando fa qualcosa di davvero stimolante, quando è davvero intelligente.

Like "She really is a remarkable woman."

The opposite is unremarkable - and it's used when something is not special or unique at all.

L'opposto è unremarkable (ordinario) - ed è utilizzato quando qualcosa non è per niente speciale o unica.

Obvious. Another good one.

Obvious. ( evidente, ovvio ). Un altro valido.

Obvious. The stress is always important with adjectives

Obvious. L'enfasi è sempre importante con gli aggettivi

because pushing down on that stressed syllable helps you to emphasise the word

perchè sollecitare la sillaba ti aiuta ad enfatizzare la parola

and to make the meaning stronger. Obvious.

e a rendere il significato più forte. Obvious.

If something is "obvious", it’s really clear and it's easy to understand.

Se qualcosa è "obvious", è davvero chiara e facile da capire.

"It’s obvious that he’s in love with you!"

"è evidente che è innamorato di te!"

"It was obvious that she didn’t want to be at the party."

"Era evidente che non voleva essere alla festa."

(Her behaviour, her body language, her tone of voice.. it was clear that she didn’t want to be there)

(Il suo comportamento, il suo linguaggio del corpo, il suo tono...era chiaro che non voleva essere lì)

"Ooops, that was an obvious mistake!"

"Ooops, era un errore ovvio!"

Acceptable.

Acceptable. ( accettabile )

Now this is a very neutral adjective, but it's a useful one!

Questo è un aggettivo molto neutrale, ma utile!

It’s used when something is reasonable for what most people would think.

è utilizzato quando qualcosa è accettabile per ciò che la maggior parte delle persone potrebbe pensare.

You know, it’s generally accepted or allowed.

è generalmente accettato o permesso.

So for example. "These days, flexible working hours are becoming more acceptable to employers."

Per esempio. "Al giorno d'oggi, orari di lavoro flessibili stanno diventando più accettabili per i datori di lavoro".

"Please let me know if the fees are acceptable. If you're OK with it."

"Per piacere fammi sapere se le tariffe sono accettabili. Se ti vanno bene."

The opposite is unacceptable. So that’s a good way to start building on your vocabulary

- learning the opposites of these adjectives. Unacceptable.

"My hotel room was filthy! It's unacceptable!"

Impossible. Impossible.

Impossible.Impossible. ( impossibile )

If something is impossible, it can’t be done

Se qualcosa è impossibile, non è possibile farla

OR it's extremely difficult to do.

o è estremamente difficile da fare.

"No, it’s impossible. It can't be done!"

"No, è impossibile. Non può essere fatto!"

"My boss gave me an impossible task."

"Il mio capo mi ha dato un compito impossibile."

"Adam is so badly behaved, it’s impossible to take him anywhere!"

"Adam si comporta così male, è impossible portarlo da qualsiasi parte!"

"It’s impossible to become fluent in English, without practising with English speakers!"

"è impossibile diventare fluenti in inglese, senza far pratica con dei madrelingua inglesi!"

Significant. Significant. Now this adjective can be used to say that something

Significant.Significant. ( significativo ) Questo aggettivo può essere usato per dire che qualcosa

is important or large.

è importante o larga.

And it’s often used to describe a change that's very noticeable.

Ed è spesso utilizzato per descrivere un cambiamento che è davvero evidente.

For example. "It’s a significant building in the city."

Per esempio. "è una costruzione significativa in città."

"Significant changes have taken place since you left."

"Ci sono stati cambiamenti significativi da quando te ne sei andata."

"There has been a significant increase in population over the last 10 years."

"C'è stato un incremento della popolazione significativo negli ultimi dieci anni."

Ridiculous. Ridiculous. Hear the stress when I exaggerate?

Ridiculous.Ridiculous. ( ridicolo ) Senti lo stress quando lo enfatizzo?

“That’s ridiculous!” Dic-diculous.

"è ridicolo!" Dic-diculous.

Also notice how this ‘u’ - is pronounced as /j/

Nota anche come questa 'u' è pronunciata come /ju/

NOT ri-di-coo-les but ri-dic-oo-les

no ri-di-cu-les ma ri-dic-ju-les

Now this is a great adjective - it can be used to describe people too, but you need to be

Questo è un gran bell'aggettivo- può essere utiizzato anche per descrivere le persone, ma devi stare attento

careful with your facial expression and your tone because it can be a negative thing.

alla tua espressione facciale e alla tua intonazione perchè può essere una cosa negativa.

It can mean silly or stupid.

Può significare sciocco o stupido.

"That’s a ridiculous idea."

"Quella è un'idea ridicola."

"You look ridiculous. Take it off!"

"Sembri ridicolo. Toglilo!"

"It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"

"è ridicolo che i negozi chiudano alle 5 pm!"

But it can also mean that something is crazy and it should be laughed at.

Ma può anche significare che qualcosa è pazzesca e della quale si dovrebbe ridere.

Same sentences again. "That’s a ridiculous idea!"

Di nuovo le stesse frasi. ""Quella è un'idea ridicola!"

"Pfft! You look ridiculous!"

"Pfft! Sembri ridicolo!"

"It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"

"è ridicolo che i negozi chiudano alle 5 pm!"

Did you pay attention to the difference there?

The tone and facial expression are really important so that the listener can understand what you mean.

Complicated. Complicated. Complicated.

Ooo this is such a good adjective to learn and use well!

Ooo questo è un così buono aggettivo da imparare e da usare bene!

You can use it when something is difficult to do, like you know, it’s hard.

Puoi usarlo quando qualcosa è difficile da fare.

Or it’s difficult to understand.

O è difficile da comprendere.

Or it could be difficult to deal with or to manage.

O con la quale è difficile trovare un accordo o controllarla.

"The directions he gave were really complicated."

"Le indicazioni che mi ha dato erano davvero complicate."

"They’ve been going out for years, but they have a complicated relationship."

"Sono stati insieme per anni, ma hanno una relazione complicata."

So, they are my favourite adjectives for describing things in English!

Questi sono i miei aggetitivi preferiti per descrivere le cose in inglese!
