A few months ago,

One of my big heroes is Malcom McLean.

제 최고의 영웅 중 한 분은 말콤 맥린입니다.

I realize that Malcom McLean is not really known on social media today,

but, in 1955, McLean invented a metal box that changed the world:

the shipping container.

That invention reduced the costs of shipping cargo

I'm sure McLean's invention started with a big dream

and I know it took a lot of attention to details

to change all of the equipment

to benefit from this container.

To me, that is what leadership is all about.

Because without attention to the details,

McLean's dream was to transform the cargo transportation industry

맥린의 꿈은 화물 운송 산업이

by making it affordable.

It is time to transform it again.

We urgently need to make it sustainable.

come from transporting goods around the world.

So what is the dream?

그렇다면 그 꿈은 무엇일까요?

In 2018, the management team of A.P. Moller - Maersk,

2018년에 A. P. 몰러-머스크 그룹의 경영진은,

이 회사는 제가 회장으로 있는 국제 해운 회사인데요,

the global shipping company I lead as a chairman,

made a commitment to make the company carbon-neutral by 2050.

2050년까지 탄소 중립을 실현하기로 약속했습니다.

For some people, 2050 sounded like a long time into the future,

but in fact,

사실 해운 회사에게는 매우 야심찬 꿈이라고 할 수 있죠.

this was a very ambitious dream for a shipping company.

To be carbon-neutral by 2050,

we needed to invent a zero-carbon container vessel

탄소 배출 없는 컨테이너 선박을 2030년까지 개발해야 합니다.

by 2030.

Because then, it would take roughly 20 years

저희 회사가 운행하는 선박 750척을

to replace all of the 750 vessels that we operate.

모두 교체하는 데 대략 20년이 걸리기 때문입니다.

So the dream was truly big and really inspiring.

정말 크고 아주 고무적인 꿈이죠.

But to be honest,

하지만 솔직히

in 2018, we did not know how to do this.

2018년에는 이 꿈을 실현할 방법이 없었습니다.

We had to work hard on the details.

세부 사항에 공을 들여야 했죠.

Now at that time, we had already focused a lot of attention

on reducing CO2 emissions from shipping.

이미 많은 주의를 기울이고 있었습니다.

In fact, we had achieved more than 40 percent reduction

per container moved

since 2008.

2008년 이래로 40% 이상 절감했습니다.

That was done by building bigger and more efficient vessels,

and by slow steaming,

which means sailing the vessel slower so it consumes less fuel.

But we were reaching the limit.

Obviously, you could sail so slow that you don't sail at all,

당연하지만 아예 멈출 정도로 느리게 항해하면

and you would save all of the CO2 emissions.

이산화 탄소를 전혀 배출하지 않을 수도 있답니다.

(Laughter)

But that didn't seem like a good solution.

하지만 그건 좋은 해결책 같지 않았죠.

Now some of the first humans who sailed the big oceans,

넓은 바다를 처음 항해한 사람 중에는

the people from Polynesia,

폴리네시아인들이 있었는데

had figured out zero-carbon shipping by using sails,

이들은 돛을 이용해 탄소 배출 없는 항해를 했습니다.

and it is true that sails can reduce the fuel consumption somewhat,

돛을 이용하면 연료 소비를 어느 정도 줄일 수는 있겠지만

but it cannot deliver on the efficiency

오늘날 국제 수송망에 필요한

and accuracy needed in today's global supply chains.

효율성과 정확성을 충족하진 못합니다.

Another alternative is batteries.

또 다른 대안은 배터리입니다.

But for the large vessels sailing the big oceans,

하지만 대양을 항해하는 대형 선박에서는

배터리가 적재량의 60%를 차지할 것입니다.

the batteries would take up 60 percent of the capacity of the vessel.

Some shipping companies started ordering vessels based on LNG,

어떤 운송 회사는 LNG를 사용하는 선박을 주문하기 시작했죠.

액화 천연 가스입니다.

liquid natural gas.

LNG is a fossil fuel,

LNG는 화석 연료이고

and it will never lead to zero-carbon shipping.

탄소 배출 없는 운송은 불가능하죠.

저속 운행, 돛, 배터리, LNG...

Slow steaming, sails, batteries, LNG --

none of it would make us be carbon-neutral.

어느 것도 탄소 중립을 실현하지 못합니다.

So what else?

그럼 다른 방법은 뭘까요?

다른 해결책을 찾아야 했는데

Well, we knew we had to look for other solutions,

and we realized we couldn't do it alone.

혼자서는 할 수 없다는 걸 알았죠.

To help us find a solution,

해법을 찾는 것을 돕기 위해 저희 대주주인 A.P.몰러 재단이

our main shareholder, the A.P. Moller Foundation,

donated 400 million Danish krone

덴마크화 4억 크로네를 기부했고

to create a global center for zero-carbon shipping in Copenhagen.

탄소 배출 없는 운송을 위한 국제 센터를 코펜하겐에 설립했습니다.

That center would bring together companies and specialists

이 센터는 회사와 전문가들을 전 세계에서 모을 겁니다.

from all over the world, not just from the transportation industry,

수송 산업에서뿐만 아니라

but also from energy, from chemicals and engineering.

에너지, 화학, 공학 분야에서도요.

And now, less than three years after our big dream,

큰 꿈을 꾼 지 3년이 되지 않은 지금

we have found the solution.

저희는 해결책을 찾아냈습니다.

‘파워 투 엑스’(P2X)라고 불리죠.

It is called "power-to-X."

Now power-to-X is not a new technology, nor did we invent it.

P2X는 새로운 기술도 아니고 저희가 개발한 기술도 아닙니다.

It is a combination of known chemical processes

이미 알려진 화학 공정을 조합해서

to convert green electricity to green fuel.

친환경 전기를 친환경 연료로 바꾸는 것입니다.

First, you convert the green electricity from solar or wind to green hydrogen.

우선 태양, 바람에서 온 친환경 전기를 그린 수소로 전환합니다.

That is done through electrolysis.

전기 분해를 이용합니다.

And then, the green hydrogen

그 다음 그린 수소는

can be converted to various types of green fuels

다양한 종류의 친환경 연료로 변환될 수 있습니다.

through chemical processes.

여러 화학 공정을 거치는 거죠.

The benefit of power-to-X

P2X의 장점은

is that it produces a green fuel that is liquid at normal temperature

이것으로 만든 친환경 연료는

보통 온도에서 액체 상태여서 내연 기관에 쓸 수 있다는 점이죠.

and can be used in a combustion engine.

그러니 20년 동안 선박 750척을 전부 교체하고

So instead of spending 20 years to replace all of our 750 vessels

and create a big pile of waste,

거대한 쓰레기 더미를 만드는 대신

we believe we can retrofit existing vessels

기존 선박을 개조해서

by adding a combustion engine designed for green fuel,

친환경 연료에 맞게 고안된 내연 기관을 설치할 수 있다고 생각합니다.

and with that, achieve zero-carbon shipping

그렇게 함으로써 탄소 배출 없는 수송을

much, much earlier.

훨씬 더 빨리 실현하는 것이죠.

On top of that, power-to-X is actually a very nice solution

게다가 사실 P2X는

재생 에너지의 가장 큰 문제 하나에 아주 좋은 해결법이기도 합니다.

for one of the biggest problems in renewable energy systems:

the storage problem.

저장 문제 말입니다.

When there's too much wind and sun,

풍력과 태양이 남아돌 때

you can convert the unused electricity to a liquid green fuel

사용하지 않은 전기를 액체 친환경 연료로 바꿔놓으면

that can be used in many different industries.

여러 다른 산업에 사용할 수 있죠.

So what are the challenges?

그렇다면 남은 과제는 무엇일까요?

Well, I often hear the same concern when it comes to sustainability.

지속 가능성을 얘기하면 같은 걱정을 자주 듣습니다.

"Can we afford it?"

“비용을 감당할 수 있을까요?“

And yes, it is true that this green fuel

네, 맞습니다.

친환경 연료가 오늘날 사용하는 벙커유에 비해 비싼 건 사실이죠.

is more expensive than the bunker fuel we use today.

In fact, it is two to three times more expensive

사실 현재 기술보다 두세 배 더 비쌉니다.

with current technology.

Like always, we need to scale these solutions

늘 그렇듯 비용을 절감하려면 규모를 키워야 합니다.

to get the cost down.

But even if the green fuel

그러나 친환경 연료가

would be two times more expensive than the bunker fuel ...

벙커유보다 두 배 더 비싸다 해도

It should not be a showstopper, come on.

그 때문에 꿈을 멈추면 안 됩니다.

Even at that price, a pair of sneakers,

비용이 그렇더라도 운동화 한 켤레를

transported from Asia to the US or Europe,

아시아에서 미국이나 유럽으로 보내는 비용은

would only cost five cents more.

겨우 5센트 오를 겁니다.

So for me,

그래서 제가 볼 떄

the argument around affordability is just a bad excuse

경제성에 대한 논쟁은

필요한 결정과 투자를 하지 않으려는 어설픈 변명에 불과합니다.

for not making the necessary decisions and investments.

And if we had a price on CO2,

만약 이산화 탄소에 가격을 매겨서

let's say around 150 dollars,

150달러쯤이라고 한다면

the affordability argument would disappear.

경제성 논쟁은 사라질 겁니다.

I urge governments to show leadership

저는 각국 정부들이 리더십을 보여

and implement a global price on CO2 now.

국제적으로 이산화 탄소에 당장 가격을 매길 것을 촉구합니다.

Because with that,

그렇게 함으로써

we could focus all of our attention on the real issue,

진짜 문제에 완전히 집중할 수 있기 때문입니다.

which is not the price, but the scale.

비용이 아니라 규모의 문제 말입니다.

At Maersk, I asked the following question:

머스크에서 저는 이런 질문을 했습니다.

"How much green electricity do we need to fuel all of our 750 vessels

“친환경 전기가 얼마나 있어야

우리 선박 750척 전부에 친환경 연료를 공급할 수 있습니까?”

with green fuel?"

Our fleet today consumes 10 million tonnes of bunker oil.

현재 저희 선단은 벙커유를 천만 톤 소비합니다.

To replace that with green fuel,

이를 친환경 연료로 교체하려면

we estimate that we need 220,000 gigawatt-hours

친환경 전기가 22만 기가와트시 필요할 것으로 추정합니다.

of green electricity.

That is the equivalent of 10 percent

of the installed base of solar and wind in 2019.

And Maersk is 20 percent of the cargo shipping industry.

So to fuel the cargo shipping industry alone

would consume 50 percent of the entire installed base of green electricity.

And that's just cargo shipping.

단지 화물 운송 분야에서만요.

In other words,

we need a dramatic, exponential scale of installations

태양, 풍력, 수소 생산, 친환경 연료 생산 설비를

of solar, of wind, of hydrogen production, of green fuel production,

기하급수적으로 늘려야 이 문제를 해결할 수 있습니다.

to solve this problem.

We estimate that the total investment

저희 추산으로는 총 투자액이

will be in the neighborhood of two trillion dollars,

대략 2조 달러에 가까울 텐데

which, granted, is a lot of money.

확실히 엄청나게 큰 금액이죠.

But actually,

하지만 사실

it is the equivalent of four years of capital expenditure

오늘날 석유와 가스 산업에서 지출하는

in the oil and gas industry today.

시설 투자 4년치와 같은 수준입니다.

I predict that for the next 10 years,

제가 예상하건대, 향후 10년 동안

the demand for green fuel will be significantly higher than the supply.

친환경 연료에 대한 수요가 공급보다 훨씬 높아질 겁니다.

Isn't that wonderful?

Higher demand and supply normally means great business opportunities

더 큰 수요와 공급은 보통 좋은 사업 기회를 의미합니다.

for everyone who chooses to participate,

모두가 뛰어들고 싶어하죠.

또한 오늘날 제 핵심 가정 중 하나를 증명하죠.

and it proves one of my key assumptions in today's world:

it has become good business to invest in sustainable solutions.

My conclusion is very simple.

제 결론은 매우 단순합니다.

We have the technologies needed to create a sustainable future.

우리는 지속 가능한 미래를 만드는 데 필요한 기술이 있습니다.

What we need is leadership,

우리에게 필요한 건 리더십입니다.

leadership to get us there faster.

우리를 미래로 더 빠르게 이끌어줄 리더십 말입니다.

On the first of July, 2021,

2021년 7월 1일에

Maersk ordered the first vessel designed for green fuel.

머스크 그룹은 친환경 연료를 사용하는 첫 번째 선박을 주문했습니다.

It will be delivered in 2023.

2023년에 인수할 예정입니다.

Only two months later, we ordered another eight large vessels

겨우 2달 만에 저희는 대형 선박 8척을 더 주문했고

and made our first investments in green fuel production.

친환경 연료 생산에 첫 투자를 했습니다.

What seemed to be an impossible dream only three years ago

겨우 3년 전만 해도 불가능한 꿈처럼 보였던 일이

이제 현실이 되고 있습니다.

is becoming reality now,

당초 계획보다 7년이 빠르죠.

seven years ahead of the original plan.

It is time for us to pursue big dreams,

even if they seem impossible.

And it is time for us to collaborate around the critical details

so we get to a sustainable future much, much faster.
