MZ: So OK, I want to start with the Bail Project,

how it came to be, how you came up with the idea.

The story goes

그 시작은

that 10 years ago, you and your husband were eating Chinese takeout food

10년전 남편분과 함께 중국식 테이크아웃 음식을 먹던 도중이었다고 하셨죠.

when you came up with the concept.

프로젝트를 시작하게 된 계기가요.

You'd been a public defender for over 30 years,

30년 넘게 국선 변호사로 일해오셨는데

but there was this moment where you decided something had to change.

뭔가가 바뀌어야 한다고 생각한 시점이 바로 그 순간이었다는 거죠.

RS: So we had both spent decades

로빈: 우리 부부는 수십년간

in the trenches of the criminal legal system as public defenders,

국선 변호사로서 범죄 법률 시스템의 최전선에서 일해왔어요.

fighting for each and every client the best we could,

모든 의뢰인들에게 최선을 다해서요.

defending people's humanity and their dignity

그분들의 인간성과 존엄을 보호하기 위해서

and fighting for their freedom.

또한 그들의 자유를 위해서 일해왔습니다.

And no matter how good we were as lawyers,

그런데 우리가 얼마나 유능한 변호사였는지와 상관없이

and I like to think we were really good,

저 스스로는 정말 잘해왔다고 생각하지만요.

and how forceful we fought on behalf of a client,

또한 고객을 위해서 얼마나 강력하게 싸웠는지와 상관없이

sometimes it all came down to a few hundred dollars.

어떤 경우에는 결국은 몇백 달러에 모든 게 결정되고 말았던 겁니다.

And that was whether or not your client could pay bail

결국 의뢰인이 보석금을 낼 수 있는지 없는지에 따라

and fight her case from freedom

자유를 위해 싸울 수 있는지

or whether she was going to be locked in jail on Rikers Island

아니면 라이커스 섬에 있는 감옥에 갇혀

and desperate would wind up pleading guilty,

결국은 유죄를 받게 될지가 결정되어 버린다는 겁니다.

whether she did it or not.

실제로 의뢰인이 죄가 있건 없건 간에요.

And that just enraged us.

그 현실은 저희를 정말 화나게 만들었습니다.

And sometimes, you know,

아시겠지만 때로는

the answers are simple and they're right in front of you.

해답은 단순하고 가까운 곳에 있기도 합니다.

And so we thought,

그래서 우린 생각해냈죠.

"Well, what if we just paid clients' bail?"

"우리가 의뢰인의 보석금을 내준다면 어떨까?"

And that's where the idea of creating a revolving bail fund --

그것이 바로 보석금 순환기금을 생각해낸 계기였어요.

because bail comes back at the end of a case,

보석금은 재판이 끝나면 반환되니까요.

if we could raise money and put it in a fund,

그러니 만일 우리가 돈을 모아 기금을 마련할 수 있고,

and have a revolving fund,

그것이 순환될 수 있다면

we could just pay bail for our clients.

의뢰인들의 보석금을 대신 낼 수 있지 않을까 생각한 거죠.

Now I have to say, that was back in 2005.

그때가 2005년 이었는데

People weren’t talking about criminal justice reform

사실 사람들이 형사 사법 개혁에 크게 관심이 없을 때였어요.

the way they are now,

지금 만큼은 말이죠,

there wasn't a lot of conversation about bail reform,

보석제도 개혁에 대해서도 크게 논의가 없었던 시기라서

and quite honestly, we spent two years knocking on people's door.

솔직히 처음 2년은 별 진전이 없었습니다.

Nobody answered.

아무도 우리에게 귀 기울이지 않았습니다.

Until one day, one man and his family, Jason Flom and his family,

어느 날 제이슨 플롬이라는 분과 그의 가족이

decided to take a chance on us and gave us a grant in 2007.

우리에게 기회를 주기로 결정하셨는데 그때가 2007년이었어요.

And we began to test the revolving bail fund model.

비로소 보석금 순환 기금 모델을 실험해 보기 시작했습니다.

And to see what would happen.

MZ: Can you clarify, though,

마누쉬: 좀 더 분명하게 설명해 주실 수 있을까요,

like, why it is so important for someone not to be in jail

누군가 재판을 기다리는 동안 감옥에 갇히지 않는 것이 왜 그렇게 중요할까요?

while they await trial?

You've explained this in the past and it really blew my mind,

예전에 설명해 주신 적이 있었는데 정말 충격적이었습니다.

because I had no idea what could happen in those days or weeks

갇혀 있는 며칠, 몇 주동안 어떤 일이 벌어질 수 있는지 전혀 몰랐거든요.

before someone actually has to plead their case.

실제로 재판에 나서기 전까지요.

RS: Sure. So, being held in jail even for a few days

로빈: 맞아요. 단 며칠이라도 감옥에 갇힌다는 것은

can change the trajectory of your life.

여러분의 삶의 궤적 전체를 바꿔버릴 수 있습니다.

It is not only the place where you can be victimized, sexually,

여러분이 성폭력의 피해자가 될 수도 있을 뿐 아니라

you can be exposed to violence,

폭력에 노출될 수도 있으며

you'll be traumatized in all sorts of ways while you're in the jail,

감옥에서의 경험으로 여러 면에서 정신적 외상을 입게 되죠.

and that's even the first few days or a week

그래서 처음 며칠 혹은 일주일 안에

is when most jail deaths actually, whether they're suicides or homicides,

감옥 내에서 자살이나 살인으로 인한 죽음이

actually happen.

실제로 일어나게 됩니다.

But while you're sitting in jail,

하지만 감옥 안에 있다보면

and understand, folks sitting in jail pretrial

그곳에서 재판을 기다리는 사람들은

have not been convicted of a crime.

실제로 범죄를 저지르지 않은 경우가 많은 거죠.

They're there because they don't have enough money to pay bail.

그들은 단지 보석금을 낼 형편이 안되서 거기 있을 뿐인 겁니다.

And while that's happening, people's lives are falling apart outside.

그런데 감옥에 있는 동안, 감옥 밖의 그들의 삶은 산산조각나죠.

You're losing your job,

직업을 잃게 되고,

you might be losing your home,

집을 잃게 될 수도 있고,

your children might be taken from you,

자녀들을 떠나보내게 되며,

your immigration status might be jeopardized,

체류자격이 없어질 수도 있고,

you might get thrown out of school.

학교에서 쫒겨날 수도 있어요.

So it's the damage to you that's happening in our local jails,

즉 감옥 안에서 직접적으로 당사자에게 일어나는 피해 뿐 아니라

but it's also what's happening to you and your family

그 사람의 가족에게까지

and your community that you've been removed from

또 그 사람이 속했던 공동체에까지 피해가 생기는 거죠.

while you're waiting for your trial,

감옥에서 재판을 기다리게 되는 동안요.

which, by the way, can take days, weeks and no exaggeration, can take years.

그 며칠 혹은 몇 주, 때로는 과장이 아니라 몇 년이 걸리기도 합니다.

MZ: So you explained this sort of crazy limbo that people are in

마누쉬: 네, 전에도 이런 말도 안되는 상황에 대해서 설명하신 적이 있었죠.

from the TED stage in 2018,

2018년 TED에서요.

and I want to just play a quick clip from that talk that you gave,

We want to take our proven revolving bail-fund model

that we built in the Bronx

and spread it across America,

attacking the front-end of the legal system

before incarceration begins.

MZ: The energy in the room when you gave your talk was palpable,

마누쉬: 토크를 할 당시 그 공간을 채운 에너지가 굉장히 뚜렷했는데요.

and it ended up getting you quite a bit of funding

결국 TED가 몇 가지 큰 아이디어들을 지지하고

from the Audacious Project,

또 그것이 진짜 일어나도록 돕는

which is TED's initiative to get some of these big ideas support

to make them actually happen.

Can you explain what has happened since you gave your talk?

그 토크 이후로 어떤 일들이 있었는지 설명해주실 수 있을까요?

RS: Sure.

로빈: 물론이죠.

So, the Audacious grant allowed us

'대담한 기금'은 우리가

to take our proven concept and to scale it.

증명한 컨셉의 규모를 조정할 수 있게 해주었습니다.

And the idea is that we are scaling this model across the country.

이 모델을 전국적 규모로 확대하는 거죠.

We're currently in 18 different sites.

우리는 현재 18개의 부지에 이것을 도입했습니다.

And we are doing two things, right?

그리고 우리는 두 가지 일을 하고 있습니다.

The Bail Project is designed both,

provide an immediate lifeline for folks that are stuck in jail cells

simply because of poverty,

because they can't pay their bail,

and that's a response to the immediate direct emergency

But the second thing we're trying to do is we're testing a model

And what we're trying to prove is,

A: you don't need cash bail,

people will come back to court without cash bail.

That myth has already been debunked and we know that.

But we're also trying to model

you can actually release people back to their communities

Make sure they're connected to services they might need.

And people will come back to court while their cases are open,

and until those cases close.

It is in an effort to move policy forward,

but here's our fear:

it's a race against time.

Because as this conversation picks up speed,

and as bail reform begins to take hold,

some systems will move to new systems

that we fear will recreate some of the same harms, right,

that the initial bail system [created].

Those are racial disparities,

economic inequality,

and we can actually recreate that if we don't get this right.

And so we're in a race against time

to prove that you can do a community-based model

that doesn't require electronic monitoring

or risk algorithms or jail cells or cash bail,

but that you can simply release people to communities with supports.

And that will work.

MZ: I want to come back to that in a minute, but before we do that,

my background is as a tech journalist,

and when you talk about scaling a program like this,

I can only assume that you are facing completely different challenges

than, say, a founder of an app or a platform or something like that.

What are the challenges?

I mean, you're going to states with different laws,

each city must be so completely different.

How do you do it?

RS: So you know, scaling the revolving bail fund itself,

로빈: 그러니까, 보석 순환기금 자체의 규모를 조정하는 것은

that's been the easy, elegant solution, right?

그렇게 어렵지 않아요, 명쾌한 해법이 존재하죠.

That's the easy part, that's direct service part,

we can scale that across the country.

The ground game,

the teams that work as bail disruptors for the Bail Project

at different locations across the country,

they have to take our model

and adapt it to the unique needs of each jurisdiction.

And that's where it becomes complex,

and it's very resource intensive,

because criminal justice is incredibly local,

and so how each system operates is unique.

And what the needs of our clients are

are incredibly different from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

So you can be in Oklahoma

and what you know is that communities have been ravaged by the opioid crisis,

and when we're bringing people home,

we have to connect them to services that might address that.

you're talking about an epidemic of homelessness.

So when you're thinking about providing direct services and bringing people home,

you have to be mindful of the fact that in that jurisdiction

that may be the biggest obstacle for people,

is that they don't have shelter.

And so we need to adapt our model in every jurisdiction we go to

MZ: I could only assume that some of these communities

Do you have to win hearts and minds as well,

RS: So I think it depends on the definition of community.

So communities that have been targeted by our criminal legal system

for generations,

communities of color, low-income communities,

marginalized communities, women across the country,

they are more than happy to see us come,

because we are just an immediate lifeline.

Bail funds are a tool to get people out as an immediate lifeline,

it's not a long-term, systemic answer, right?

But people are, of course,

they want to get out, go back to their families,

their communities want them home.

Has there been some opposition?

거기에 반대가 있었을까요?

Sure, of course.

그럼요, 물론이죠.

You know, when we go into a new site,

우리는 새로운 곳에 갈 때

we do so carefully, we prospect it carefully,

매우 조심스럽게 접근하고, 또 조사합니다.

we try to understand who are our partners on the ground

that might help us in this initiative,

grassroots organizers, not-for-profit organizations,

systems holders, sheriffs, right?

Who is going to support us and who our opposition might be.

누가 우리를 지지해줄 것이고, 누가 반대할 것인지를 보려고 하죠.

MZ: You also put some of the people that you bail out,

마누쉬: 보석 기금으로 석방시킨 사람들 중 몇몇을

you bring them back, right, as program officers.

프로그램의 관리자로 데려오고 계시기도 하죠.

Is that part of the system

혹시 이렇게 하고 계신 활동 관련해서

that you're trying to make a community around your efforts in some way?

어떤 커뮤니티를 형성하려고 하는 노력이 프로젝트의 일부인 건가요?

RS: So when we're hiring for local jurisdictions,

로빈: 어떤 관할지역에서 사람을 채용할 때,

we always hire locally.

If we open a site in Baton Rouge,

we hire people from Baton Rouge and are connected to the community.

We try to prioritize people with lived experience

We think it's important, they understand the system best,

they have the best solutions because they're closest to the problem

and they're credible messengers for the clients

that we're going to be interviewing and providing bail for.

MZ: So you touched on this,

마누쉬: 잠깐 말씀하셨었는데

criminal justice reform has become a hot topic,

형사 사법제도의 개혁이 이제 뜨거운 논쟁거리가 되었죠.

you must be like, "Yay, finally people are talking about this thing

that I've been banging on about for decades."

Here in California actually, though, there has been a big change.

Now it's complicated,

but my understanding is that they're getting rid of cash bail.

제가 이해하기로는 여기서 현금보석을 폐지한다는 것 같아요.

Good thing, bad thing, not quite that simple to explain?

이건 좋은가요, 나쁜가요? 혹은 그렇게 간단히 설명할 수 있는 건 아닌가요?

RS: So everything about criminal justice reform,

로빈: 사법 제도 개혁에 관한 모든 것, 그리고 특히

and particularly bail reform,

보석제도 개편에 관한 것은

is way more complex than it looks, right?

보이는 것보다 굉장히 복잡합니다.

So it's easy to have a hashtag that says "end cash bail."

그러니까 '현금보석 폐지'라는 해쉬태그를 만드는 것은 쉽죠.

Totally right.

맞는 일이고요.

We have to eliminate unaffordable cash bail forever.

우리는 감당 불가능한 현금보석을 영원히 폐지해야 합니다.

We know money isn't what makes people come back,

사람들을 법정으로 돌아오게 하는 것이 돈이 아니고 미신이란 것을

it's a myth, let's get rid of it.

우리는 알죠. 이제는 없앱시다.

But the question about what comes next is very, very complex,

and California was a good example.

There was a bill that worked its way through the political process,

It started out as what looked like a bill

that would actually move towards more decarceration.

By the time it came out of the political process,

frankly it was a bill that almost nobody in the community would support,

And it had gone through

some changes in that process

that sort of had a lot of the telltale signs of a system

and so, that bill actually moved through the process,

How should they vote?

RS: So I'm not so bold as to say that.

I may be audacious, but I'm not that audacious.

But what I will say is, educate yourselves.

제가 할 수 있는 말은, 공부하세요.

Understand what you're voting on.

무엇에 대한 투표를 하고 있는지 이해하세요.

Understand what it means to hold somebody in jail

아직 유죄 선고도 받지 않은 사람을, 그들이 가난하다는 이유만으로

who hasn't been convicted of a crime

감옥에 가둬두는 것이

simply for their poverty, right?

어떤 의미인지 이해하세요.

And ask yourselves, do we want to have a criminal legal system

그리고 스스로에게 질문하세요: 우리는 정말 유죄 판결 이전부터

that incarcerates people before they've been convicted of a crime?

사람들을 감옥에 가두는 사법 제도를 원하는가?

Do we want to have a criminal legal system

유색인종 커뮤니티와 저소득층을

that continues to target communities of color

지속적으로 겨냥하는

and low-income communities across this country,

사법 제도를 원하는가?

do we want to continue the damage and the devastation

대규모 감금을 통해 생겨난

that we have created through mass incarceration?

피해와 유린을 지속하고 싶은가?

So I'm not taking position on which way you should vote,

저는 어느 쪽에 투표해야한다고 편을 가르지는 않을 거예요.

but take that into account.

그렇지만 이 사실들을 염두에 두세요.

MZ: She told me backstage, "I'm not sure how I'm going to vote yet."

마누쉬: 로빈이 무대 뒤에서 "저는 아직 어떻게 투표할지 모르겠어요" 라고 했어요.

I mean, it's that difficult, right?

그러니까 그만큼 어려운 문제인 거죠.

RS: Well, it's a little more complicated.

로빈: 조금 더 복잡하다는 거죠.

It's the form of SB 10 as it exists

우리 중 많은 사람들은 SB 10법안을

is not a bill that most of us would support, right?

지금 있는 그대로의 형태로는 지지하지 않습니다.

But eliminating cash bail is critical.

그렇지만 현금보석제도의 폐지는 아주 중요하죠.

MZ: Alright, I want you to forecast into the future.

마누쉬: 좋아요, 그렇다면 미래의 전망을 한 번 내다봐주세요.

What does an ideal system look like?

이상적인 시스템은 어떤 형태일까요?

You have said that America is addicted to incarceration.

미국이 사람들을 감금하는 것에 중독되어 있다고 하셨죠.

Does there have to be a cultural shift around that

그러면 이미 말씀하신 변화에 대한 필요성에서 더 나아가

in addition to making some of the changes that you're talking about?

문화적인 변화도 일어나야 할까요?

RS: So, you know, we have to reckon with what we've done.

로빈: 그러니까, 우리는 우리가 해온 일에 대해 생각해봐야 합니다.

If we don't face head-on

우리가 사법 제도를 어떻게 사용해왔는지를,

how we've used our criminal legal system,

누구를 겨냥해왔고, 범죄를 어떻게 정의내려왔고,

and who we have targeted, and how we've defined crime,

사람들을 어떻게 처벌해왔는지를

and how we punish people,

정면으로 마주하지 않는다면

we're never going to move forward.

우리는 절대 앞으로 나아갈 수 없습니다.

So we are going to have to reckon with the harm that we've caused.

그래서 우리는 우리가 끼쳐왔던 피해에 대해 생각할 필요가 있습니다.

And in so doing, we're going to have to shift our lens.

그 과정에서, 우리의 시점을 바꿀 필요도 있습니다.

And that's a real challenge for us, right?

We're going to have to shift our lens

처벌과 잔인함과 소외,

from a system that's about punishment and cruelty and isolation

and cages

to a lens of,

"What do you need, how can we support,

"무엇이 필요하세요, 어떻게 도와드릴까요,

where have we failed,

how can we make that better,

how can we restore and how can we heal?"

어떻게 치유하고 회복할 수 있을까요?"

And if we aren't willing to do that,

그리고 우리가 바뀔 의지가 없다면

criminal justice reform is going to be stalled,

사법 제도 개혁은 지연될 것이고

or what comes next is going to be really problematic.

혹은 이 이후에 올 무언가는 정말 문제투성이일 것입니다.

It is a fundamental shift in the way that we see

이것은 우리가 사법 제도를 바라보는 시점의

our criminal justice system.

기반을 뒤집는 변화입니다.

And make no mistake about it,

여기서 제대로 짚어야 하는 것은

the context of our criminal legal system

우리 사법 제도는

is we have turned our back on social problems, right?

우리 사회의 문제들로부터 등을 돌려버렸습니다.

So we have turned our backs on homelessness

노숙자로부터

and dire poverty and structural racism

극심한 가난과 조직적인 인종차별,

and mental health challenges

정신 건강 관련한 어려움,

and addiction

여러가지 중독,

and even immigration status.

심지어 이주민 문제에 관해서도요.

And instead, we have used our jails and our criminal legal system, right,

이러한 문제들에 대안을 제시하는 대신, 우리는 감옥과 사법 제도를 이용한 겁니다.

to answer those problems.

And that has to change.

이 문제는 바뀌어야 합니다.

MZ: It's not the answer.

마누쉬: 감옥은 답이 될 수 없죠.

RS: We have done damage to millions of people

로빈: 우리는 수백만명의 사람들에게 피해를 입혔고,

and in so doing, we have harmed their families

그 과정에서 그들의 가족들과 커뮤니티 또한

and we have harmed their communities,

피해를 입었습니다.

and we need to reckon with that.

우리는 이 점도 생각해야 해요.

MZ: So I want to ask you finally --

마누쉬: 마지막으로 여쭤보고 싶은데요.

You've got some of the smartest women in the world here,

세계에서 손꼽히게 똑똑한 여성들이

surrounding you.

They're energized,

이 활력 넘치는 사람들은

they want to know what to do with that energy

그들의 커뮤니티로 돌아갔을 때

when they go back to their communities.

자신의 에너지를 어떻게 사용할 수 있을지 궁금해 합니다.

And actually I know you took some of them to see a local jail yesterday, right?

제가 알기로는, 실제로 이 중 몇 명을 지역의 감옥에 데려가 보셨죠?

RS: I did.

로빈: 네, 맞아요.

MZ: Can you tell us about that?

마누쉬: 좀 더 말씀해주실 수 있나요?

RS: So, here's what we need to understand.

로빈: 우리가 알아야 할 것이 있습니다.

This problem is all of our problems.

이 문제는 우리 모두의 문제입니다.

Each and every one of us is implicated

우리 개개인은 현재 우리 사법 제도의

in what our criminal legal system looks like.

형태에 책임이 있습니다.

There is no escaping that.

이 책임은 회피할 수 없어요.

It reflects each of us.

이것은 각각의 우리를 반영합니다.

Every time a prosecutor gets up and says,

검사들이 "캘리포니아의 시민들,"

"The people of the state of California" or "New York" or "Idaho,"

혹은 "뉴욕," 또는 "아이다호" 라고 외치는 것은

they are speaking in your names.

여러분의 이름으로 말하고 있는 것입니다.

So we have to take some ownership over this.

And we really have to own the fact that this has to change

and this implicates every one of us.

So what you need to do, is as I said,

you need to get educated, you also need to get proximate to this.

And by getting proximate,

I mean you need to go and see how our criminal legal system operates.

우리 사법 제도가 어떻게 작용하고 있는지 직접 가서 봐야 한다는 말입니다.

That may mean go to a local criminal courthouse,

이건 각 지역의 형사 법원에 가서

sit in the back of a courtroom,

법정에 한 번 앉아 보라는 뜻일 수도 있죠.

and I promise you will never be the same,

저는 여러분이 전과 같지 않으리라 단언할 수 있습니다.

it's what made me become a public defender all those years ago.

예전의 그 경험이 저를 국선 변호인으로 만들었거든요.

And yesterday, I took a bunch of people from the TED conference

그리고 어제, 저는 TED 컨퍼런스에 있던 몇몇 사람들을

to the local jail here.

이 지역의 감옥에 데려갔습니다.

I have been coming in and out of jails for 38 years.

저는 38년 동안 감옥을 들락날락 거리고 있는데요.

And I have never not been shocked,

단 한 번도 충격을 받지 않은 적이 없습니다.

and yesterday was no exception.

어제도 예외는 아니었고요,

I was shocked, I was horrified.

저는 충격 받았고, 공포감을 느꼈어요.

The conditions were dehumanizing and degrading and horrifying --

감옥 안은 비인간적이고, 모욕적이고, 공포스럽습니다.

and incomprehensible

직접 보지 않는다면

if you don't actually see it with your eyes.

이해할 수 없는 환경이죠.

It was shocking.

매우 충격적이었습니다.

And I saw it on the faces of the people that I was with.

그리고 저는 이 충격을 저와 동행했던 사람들의 얼굴에서도 보았습니다.

So we have to know that's what we're doing in the name of justice in this country

우리는 이 나라에서 정의의 이름 아래 그런 일들이 자행되고 있다는 것을 알고

and stand up against it.

그에 맞서야 합니다.

But the only way you're going to do that

그러기 위해서는

is if you fight back the narrative of fear that enables that to happen.

이런 끔찍한 일들을 일어나게 한 공포의 이야기에 맞서 싸워야만 합니다.

And what do I mean by that?

이게 무슨 뜻이냐고요?

I promise you, every single time you get into a conversation

단언컨대 보석제도 개편과

about bail reform or criminal justice reform,

사법 제도 개편에 관한 말을 할 때마다

here's what happens:

이런 일들이 일어납니다.

everybody starts talking about the scary case.

사람들은 무서운 사건들에 대해 이야기 하기 시작하죠.

"But what about the guy who did X?"

"이런이런 짓을 한 사람은 어쩌고요?"

So here's what I'm here -- to rest --

그러니까 잠시동안

Just have you rest a little bit and sit with this, right?

잠깐 동안만 멈추고 이야기를 들어보세요.

Despite the fact that we have used our criminal legal system

우리는 사법 제도를 이용해서

and destroyed millions of people,

수백만의 사람들을 무너뜨렸고

that we have harmed people,

또 해를 끼쳤으며

exposed them to trauma and violence,

그들을 트라우마와 폭력에 노출시켰습니다.

day after day after day,

매일매일이요.

the truth is, when people come home,

그럼에도 사실은 사람들이 집으로 돌아가면

bad things happen rarely.

나쁜 일들은 드물게 일어납니다.

It is the exception, not the rule.

반드시 일어나지 않는, 예외일 뿐이에요.

It is the extraordinary, not the normal.

특별한 경우이지, 통상적인 일이 아닙니다.

But if you don't know that,

그러나 만약 이 사실을 모른다면

if you don't hold on to that,

이 사실을 계속 기억하지 않는다면

if you can't support that with data, which we can,

통계로 이 사실을 뒷받침할 수 없다면 이건 우리가 할 수 있죠.

you will be drawn into the narrative of fear

당신은 공포의 이야기에 이끌려

that will lead us to justify

우리가 그동안

the kinds of horrors we have inflicted

유색인종 커뮤니티와

upon communities of color and low-income communities

저소득층과, 오랫동안 우리 사법 제도의

and people that become ensnared in our criminal legal system

덫에 빠진 사람들에게 가해온 폭력을

for far too long.

정당화하게 될 것입니다.

So get educated --

그러니 공부하세요.

Get educated, proximate, stay vigilant,

이 일에 대해 공부하고, 가까워지고,

do not be drawn into the narratives of fear,

항상 경계해서 인종에 따라 심하게 차별하는

which are wildly and grossly racialized anyway.

공포의 이야기에 빠지지 않도록 하세요.

Check it when you hear it,

들을 때는 견제하고,

question it when somebody says it to you,

누군가가 말하면 항상 질문하세요.

ask for the data, "Why do you say that," right?

뒷받침할 자료를 요구하세요, "왜 그런 말을 하느냐" 고요.

And don't get drawn into that.

사람들의 이야기에 이끌리지 마세요.

And if you do,

제가 말한대로 한다면

I'm actually convinced

저는 확신하건대

that we're at a moment where we will build a better criminal legal system.

우리는 더 나은 사법 제도를 만들 수 있는 순간에 서 있습니다.

If you get proximate to this

만약 당신이 이 일에 가까워지고

and you actually begin to engage in it,

실제로 이 일에 관여하기 시작한다면

we will not only be a better country,

우리는 더 나은 나라가 될 뿐만 아니라

each of us will be better people.

우리 개개인도 더 나은 사람이 될 것입니다.

And that is a worthy goal.

그리고 그건 가치 있는 목표이죠.

MZ: It's a very worthy goal.
