But you know, I used to hate my ass ...

I have my father’s shape and my mother’s size,

so it was big and long.

I used to think that only asses like J.Lo’s or Beyoncé’s could be famous.

아이들이 원하는 몸매는 아니니까요.

I never thought that could happen to me.

I always felt like my body type wasn’t the right one

그때는 영화에서도 여자들이 이런 말을 했죠.

or the desirable one growing up,

because I grew up in an era where having a big ass wasn’t mainstream.

그게 나쁜 것인 것처럼요.

저는 제 엉덩이가 잘못된 것처럼 느꼈어요.

I grew up watching movies where women were like,

그런데 말이죠...

“Does my ass look fat in this?”

이 오동통한 엉덩이가 성공했어요.

like it was a bad thing.

I felt like the ass odds were against me,

but baby --

제 엉덩이가 대화의 주제가 되었죠.

So the first time I saw twerking in person was at a teen club called The Z

거기서 제 또래 여자 아이들이

뉴올리언스 바운스 음악에 맞춰 엉덩이를 흔드는 걸 봤죠.

in Houston, Texas.

그때는 이렇게 생각했어요. “도대체 어떻게 하는 거지?”

Hey, shout out, Houston,

we got some Houstonians here!

제게는 불가능한 일이었거든요.

There I saw a bunch of girls my age shaking their booty to New Orleans bounce,

제 카리브 절친인 피치스와 졸린에게 감사를 전하고 싶어요.

and I was like, “How are they doing that?”

It was incredible to me.

Thanks to my Caribbean besties, Peaches and Jolene,

It’s important to me to keep the origin story of twerking alive.

현대 트월킹은 흑인과 흑인 문화에서 왔어요.

So here’s some farm-to-table for that ass.

(Laughter)

서아프리카 춤인 마푸카와 밀접한 관계가 있죠.

전통적으로 마푸카는 서아프리카 여성을 위한 춤이었어요.

Modern-day twerking derived from Black people and Black culture.

기쁨을 찬양하는 데에 쓰였고요.

It has a direct parallel to West African dances like mapouka.

종교적인 숭배이기도 했지요.

관계 맺을 준비가 되었다는 의미의 결혼식 춤이기도 해요.

Traditionally, mapouka was a dance for West African women

아니면 혼인 관계...

to be used as a celebration of joy,

결혼할 준비란 말이죠, 결혼할 준비.

이상한 상상 하지 마세요.

religious worship

or a dance to do at a wedding to show you were DTF

노예선에 실려 대서양을 건너온 흑인 여성들이 이 춤을 가져 왔고

or DTM ...

미국 흑인 교회에서의 링샤우트 춤이 되었습니다.

down to marry, down to marry --

get your mind out the gutter.

마 레이니나 베시 스미스의 블루스에도 이 엉덩이 춤이 녹아있고,

Black women carried these dances across the transatlantic slave trade

조세핀 베이커의 바나나 춤 동작에도 이 춤이 녹아있습니다.

to the ring shout and what became the Black American Church,

재즈 댄스에서 지르박까지,

노래 Shake Ya Tailfeather 에서 Shake Ya Thang 까지,

into the hips of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith when they sang the blues,

That Thang Thangin 까지 말이에요.

into the bounce of Josephine Baker’s banana dance.

흑인들은 이 춤의 기원을 DNA로 가지고 있어요.

From jazz dance to jitterbug,

from shake ya tailfeather to shake your thang

피 속에 흐르고, 뼛속까지 녹아있죠.

to that thang thangin.

Black people carried the origins of this dance through our DNA,

자 이제 큰 엉덩이를 가진 흑인 여성으로서,

through our blood,

through our bones.

We made twerking the global, cultural phenomenon it has become today.

트월킹을 하는 사람으로서,

그걸 평생 평생 해온 사람으로서,

저는 이 분야 전문가라고 자부해요.

Now, as a big, Black woman who has ass,

이 춤의 원래 어원에 대해 잠시 말씀드릴까 합니다.

who can twerk

and who’s been doing it her whole life,

왜냐하면 중요하거든요.

I kind of think I'm an expert on the subject.

그래야 흑인들이 예술과 역사에서 지워지지 않을 거고,

I want to add to the classical etymology of this dance because it matters.

트월킹의 혁신에서도 지워지지 않을 거예요.

Black people will not be erased from the creation,

the history

and the innovation of twerking.

From TikTok trends to songs and humor,

we see so much erasure of what Black people have created,

트월킹은 미국 흑인들의 공동 협업이에요.

so I want to do everything in my power

남부 흑인 문화에서 시작되었고요.

to prevent the erasure of Blackness from twerking.

뉴올리언즈의 DJ 주빌리와 캐시 머니 레코드에서부터

Twerking is a Black American communal collaboration

릴 존과 애틀란타의 잉 양 트윈스,

마이애미의 엉클 루크에 이르기까지

born of Black Southern culture.

트월킹은 남부의 거의 모든 흑인 클럽에 있었어요.

From DJ Jubilee and Cash Money Records in New Orleans,

to Lil Jon

하지만 이런 음악들이 나오고 몇 년 뒤에

and the Ying Yang Twins in Atlanta,

to Uncle Luke in Miami,

트월킹은 마침내 대세가 되고 말았죠.

twerking was alive and well in nearly every Black club in the South.

But it would take years after these songs were released

for twerking to finally become mainstream.

데스티니 차일드의 노래 덕분에

The “Uh-oh” dance.

그리고 2003년 비욘세의 “Crazy in Love” 뮤직 비디오 덕분에

Beyoncé called it that because she was trying to warn us.

Because of Destiny’s Child,

세상에 “어-오” 춤이 소개되었어요.

bootylicious is in the dictionary.

And because of Beyoncé’s 2003 music video for her single “Crazy in Love,”

팝스타가 그런 춤을 추는 걸 그때 처음 보았어요.

그리고 저도 그녀처럼 되고 싶었죠.

the world was introduced to the “Uh-oh” dance.

비욘세 덕분에 제 자신을 찾을 수 있었습니다.

That was the first time I’d ever seen a popstar do something like that,

섹시한 엉덩이를 가진 사람이요.

그녀가 엉덩이를 흔들고도

and I wanted to be just like her.

여전히 미국인들 눈에 세련되게 보일 수 있으니까요.

Beyoncé gave me permission to be myself ...

그렇게 되긴 어렵죠.

to be bootylicious.

휴스턴에서 미니애폴리스로 2010년대 초에 이사왔을 때

Because she could shake ass and still be seen as classy

마을에 빅 프리디아 공연이 있기 전까지 한동안 트월킹을 보지 못했어요.

in the eyes of America.

And that was hard to do.

빅 프리디아는 목사님 같은 목소리로 바운스 음악을 노래하죠.

When I moved from Houston to Minneapolis in the early 2010s,

I hadn’t seen twerking in a while until Big Freedia’s tour came to town.

Now, Big Freedia performs bounce music with the voice of a preacher

공연에서 빅 프리디아는

If you can imagine, it’s incredible.

이랬던 기억이 나요. “와 나 진짜 하고 싶었어.”

Big Freedia has a moment in her shows

where she will call people on stage to twerk,

(웃음)

and she chose me from the audience to battle another person.

무대에 올라가서 생각했어요.

엉덩이를 흔드는 거라면 내가 이길 거라고요.

And I remember being like, “Oh my God, I miss this so much.”

빅 프리디아뿐만 아니라 여기서 트월킹은 내가 최고라고요.

(Laughter)

그렇게 해서

When I was up there I thought to myself,

저는 트월킹에 다시 빠져들었습니다.

not only am I shaking ass but I am winning,

제 솔로 음악을 공연하기 시작하면서

and besides Big Freedia, I’m the best twerker in the building.

퍼포먼스에 트월킹을 포함시켰어요.

And just like that,

I was reintroduced to twerking.

When I started to perform my solo music,

I began incorporating twerking into my performances,

and people would go crazy.

I performed for mainly indie audiences,

and I liked it that way.

Twerking made me feel empowered.

It was my secret language;

my sauce.

Little did I know that a couple of years later,

2013년에

Miley Cyrus would perform what seemed like the twerk heard around the world.

몇 개월 차이로

저는 제 데뷔 앨범 “Lizzobangers”을 발표했고,

마일리 사이러스는 “Bangerz” 앨범을 발표했죠.

Y’all remember that.

In 2013,

within a month of each other,

같은 해에 마일리 사이러스는 싱글 “We Can’t Stop”을 발표했고

I released my debut project,

자기 뮤직 비디오에서 트월킹을 했어요.

“Lizzobangers,”

and Miley Cyrus released her project, “Bangerz.”

그때 이랬던 게 기억나요.

“미쳤어. 마일리 사이러스가 여기저기서 트월킹하고 있잖아!”

That same year, Miley released the single “We Can’t Stop,”

(웃음)

and she was twerking in the video.

몇 달 뒤, MTV 시상식에서는 로빈 시크와 함께 공연도 했죠.

I remember being like, “This is crazy;

그날 밤, 트월킹은 대세가 되었어요.

Hannah Montana twerking all over the place.”

(Laughter)

언론은 트월킹을 이렇게 묘사했습니다.

A couple months later, she performed with Robin Thicke on the V.M.A.s,

“불쾌하고 역겹다.”

and that night, seemingly overnight, twerking went mainstream.

비평가들도 트월킹을 공격했죠.

그게 젊은 여성들을 착취하고 성적 대상화한다고요.

The media described twerking as, I quote, “disturbing and disgusting.”

한때 대세였다가

트월킹은 맥락에서 벗어나 대중에게 잘못 인식됐습니다.

Critics blasted twerking

as something that was exploiting and over-sexualizing young women.

달콤씁쓸했죠.

한편으로

저는 흑인 여성이 트월킹을 대중화하길 바랐어요.

Once mainstream,

twerking was misunderstood and taken out of context.

하지만 다른 한편으로

It was bittersweet.

대세가 된 트월킹 덕분에 제 경력과 이미지가 부각됐죠.

For one,

I wish that a Black woman could have popularized twerking in the mainstream.

But on the other end,

흑인들이 만들어낸 모든 것은

twerking going mainstream played a role in the rise of my profile and my career.

패션에서 음악, 우리가 말하는 방식까지

대중 문화에 의해 채택되고 사용되었습니다.

Everything that Black people create,

from fashion to music to the way we talk,

is co-opted, appropriated and taken by pop culture.

For this reason,

to the experience of Black people in America.

I’m not trying to gatekeep,

but I’m definitely trying to let you know who built the damn gate.

The fact that I can make a stake in the reclamation of Black things

and Black culture

makes me very optimistic.

그리고 저에 대해 이야기한다는 게

To be on stage at the premiere conference for the experts in their field,

저를 낙관적으로 만들어요.

제가 할 수 있는 일이라곤 자랑하며 주인의식을 갖는 거예요.

talking about twerking --

왜냐하면

and stating my facts,

트월킹은 낙관주의의 진주와 같으니까요.

makes me optimistic.

자기 표현과 자유를 나타내는 방법이죠.

The best thing I can do is be loud and take ownership,

자신감을 나타내기도 하고요.

트월킹은 제가 음악할 때만 하는 게 아니에요.

because for me,

twerking is a pearl of optimism.

이건 아주 유용해요.

It’s a form of self-expression, freedom --

제 삶을 더 즐겁게 하는 방식이에요.

confidence.

아침에 일어나면

Twerking is not just something I do to music.

트월킹으로 스트레칭을 하고 몸을 가꿉니다.

It’s extremely useful.

허리를 숙이고 엉덩이만 움직이는 거죠.

It manifests in my life in ways that I need more joy.

요가에서 강아지 자세처럼요.

In the mornings,

나마스테.

twerking leads me to stretching and taking care of my body.

(웃음)

I bend over and I isolate my cheeks;

가끔은 노래를 틀어두고 엉덩이를 흔들어요.

I’m in downward dog.

그럼 바로 스스로를 사랑할 수 있어요.

단순한 자기애가 아니라

Sometimes I’ll put on a song and I shake ass,

and immediately I’m in love with myself.

And not just self-love.

But it’s not just sexual.

Twerking is a deep, soulful, spiritual practice.

It’s hip-opening.

It’s empowering.

When performed as the mapouka,

집에서도 할 수 있고요.

it’s said to connect you to God.

전 세계의 여성과 사람들의 자유를 증진시킵니다.

It’s sacred.

And now we’re practicing that on mainstream stages.

트월킹은 인류에게 좋답니다.

We're practicing that at home,

and it's contributing to the liberation of women and people around the world.

40년 전에

뉴욕의 흑인들이 브레이크 댄스를 만들었을 때,

Twerking is good for humanity.

악한 것으로 취급당했습니다.

(Laughter)

주요 언론은 브레이크 댄스를 갱단과 폭력에 연관시켰어요.

Forty years ago,

when Black and brown people in New York invented break dancing,

하위 문화의 예술 형태라며 진지하게 받아들여지지 않았어요.

it was villainized.

Mainstream media weaponized break dancing by connecting it to gang activity

그런데 이제와서는

브레이크 댄스는 올림픽 종목이 되었어요.

and violence.

As an art form and subculture,

it wasn’t taken seriously.

Fast-forward to today,

break dancing is now an Olympic sport.

I twerk because it’s unique to the Black experience.

It’s unique to my culture,

I twerk for fat Black women,

숨쉬는 것처럼 자연스러운 일이기 때문에 저는 트월킹을 해요.

because being fat and Black is a beautiful thing.

흑인 여성이 트월킹을 만들었고 트월킹은 혁명의 일부분입니다.

우리는 지금까지 계속했고

앞으로도 계속할 거예요.

I twerk because it’s as natural to me as breathing.

우리는 지금껏, 그리고 앞으로도 미래 계획을 갖고 있으니까요.

Black women invented twerking,

and twerking is part of the revolution.

We’ve been doing it,

we’re going to keep on doing it

because we have and always will be the blueprint.
