저는 기억합니다.

Do you remember when you were 12 years old?

2013년, 제 동생 이사벨과 함께

I do.

I was on a mission,

발리에서 운동을 시작했습니다.

convinced that I could change the world around me.

왜냐하면 문제를 접한 저는 쉬운 해결책이 있다고 생각했거든요.

In 2013, together with my sister Isabel,

저희는 뭐라도 하고 싶었습니다.

심각해지는 플라스틱 오염 문제에 대해서요.

I started a movement in Bali

because I saw a problem that I thought had an easy solution.

제 섬 고향, 인도네시아 발리에서 말이죠.

운동을 처음 시작했을 때엔,

We wanted to do something

“체인지메이커”나 “운동가”라는 말을 들어본 적이 없었습니다.

about the growing problem of plastic pollution

on our home island of Bali, Indonesia.

오늘 저는 스스로를 전업 체인지메이커이자

Now, when I first started,

운동 제창자로서 여러분께 소개합니다.

I had never heard of the word “changemaker” or “activist.”

하지만 이 말이 항상 자신 있게 나오지는 않았습니다.

Today, I introduce myself as a full-time changemaker and movement builder.

이런 말이 있죠,

“그 때 내가 오늘 알고 있는 것을 알았더라면.”

But it was not always delivered with such confidence.

익숙한 말이죠?

저는 넘치는 열정과 흥미를 가지고

There is this saying,

"If I only knew back then what I know today."

발리에서 비닐봉지를 없애겠다는 믿음으로 운동을 시작했습니다.

Sounds familiar, right?

I started full of passion and excitement,

여름이 끝나고 학기가 시작되기 전에 말이죠.

believing that I would achieve this change of making Bali plastic-bag-free

그리고 저는 어디를 가든지 간에

항상 이런말을 들었습니다. “어머, 너무 귀엽고 영감을 주네요.”

before summer was over and the school year started.

두 명의 어린 소녀와 많은 친구들이 변화를 만들려고 하는 건

And everywhere I went,

I was met with, "Oh, so cute, so inspirational."

특별한 일인 것 같더라고요.

And yeah, I guess two little girls and a bunch of friends

그런데 말이죠,

귀여움이 저희가 지향하는 바는 아니었어요.

trying to make a difference is pretty special.

저는 서서히 팀을 만들고,

자료를 모으고, 캠페인을 수립하고,

But you know what?

Cute wasn't really what I was going for.

해변 정화작업을 하기 위한 운동을 개시하고

I slowly learned to build a team,

서명운동을 하고

대중 연설을 하며 정치인들을 만나는 법을 배워나갔습니다.

to gather evidence, create campaigns,

develop a movement, to stage beach cleanups

배우면 배울수록,

저는 더 많은 변화를 원했습니다.

collect signatures,

speak in public and meet politicians.

열정은 곧 강박으로 변해버렸고

The more I learned,

변화가 기대만큼 빠르게 나타나지 않았던

the more I wanted things to change.

Passion quickly turned into obsession,

14살 무렵,

좌절이 제 영혼에 깊게 자리 잡았습니다.

and when change didn't happen as quickly as I expected,

그리고 얼마 가지 않아

at 14 years old,

고등학교 1학년 때, 저는 번아웃을 겪게 되었습니다.

frustration settled deep in my soul.

하지만, 그래도 저는 그 일을 후회하지 않습니다.

And soon after that,

in my first years of high school, I experienced my first burnout.

왜냐면 2019년,

발리에서 마침내 일회용 플라스틱 봉지 사용이 금지되었거든요.

But having said that, I wouldn't have changed a thing,

제 동료들과 저는 배움의 여정을 만들어 나갔습니다.

especially because in 2019,

틀에 박힌 교과 과정과 교실 수업의 바깥에서요.

Bali finally did ban single-use plastic bags.

저희들만의 지침과 체계를 만들어

My peers and I created our own learning journey

다음은 무얼 해야할지 서로 공유할 수 있도록 하고,

outside of the traditional curriculum and classroom.

필요한 추진력을 지속적으로 얻으면서

Building our own guidance and frameworks

우리가 바라던 변화를 이룰 방법을 찾았죠.

that could share with us what the next step should be,

저는 많은 인생 교훈을 정말 빠른 시간 안에 마쳤습니다.

how to continue building the momentum we needed

하지만 그 교훈 중에 제가 일찍이 듣고 싶었던 말은 없었습니다.

to achieve the change we wanted to see.

I went through a lot of life lessons very quickly.

처음 운동을 시작하던 시절에 들었더라면 좋았을 말들이요.

우선,

변화는 여름 휴가처럼 빠르게 나타나지 않는다는 겁니다.

And yet there are things that I wish someone could have told me earlier,

back when I was starting.

오랜 시간이 걸리고,

First,

이를 받아들이기는 쉽지 않죠.

change does not happen as quickly as summer vacation.

이게 바로 시간이 지남에 따라 명확한 목표 설정이 필요한 이유입니다.

It takes a long time,

and that is not always easy to accept.

또한, 정말 많은 사람이 필요합니다.

But that is why it is essential to create a clear goal with a timeline.

경청하고, 열린 마음으로 배우고,

임무에 충실해야 합니다.

Also, it takes a lot of people.

알고 있으면 도움이 될 또 다른 것은

Listen and be open to learn,

기업, 정치인과 협력을 모색하는 방법입니다.

but stay true to the mission.

And it would have also been so helpful to know

누군가는 꺼리는 문제를 해결해야 하니까요.

how to navigate collaborations with businesses and politicians.

그리고 마지막으로,

잠시 쉬면서 물러나 있어도 괜찮습니다.

Someone has to address the elephant in the room.

여러분이 휴식을 취하는 동안

And finally,

최전선에 있는 많은 사람들이 일을 계속할 것입니다.

it's OK to take a break and step back for a second.

오늘날, 점점 더 나이 어린 사람들이 활동에 참여하고 있습니다.

There are many of us on the front lines

who will continue the work while you rest and recharge.

16세, 15, 14, 10세들이 최전선에 서서

Today, many of us are getting involved at a younger and younger age.

학교를 빠지고 성명서를 만들고, 시위를 조직하고,

16-year-olds, 15, 14, 10-year-olds are out on the front lines,

정부와 기업을 법정으로 부릅니다.

조금 더 나이를 먹을 때까지 기다리기를 거부하면서요.

missing school, drafting manifestos, organizing demonstrations,

bringing governments and corporations to court,

하지만 체인지메이커는 아무나 버킷리스트처럼 달성하는 게 아닙니다.

refusing to wait until we are older to start making a difference.

아이들이 커서 되고자 하는 꿈의 종류도 아니죠.

But being a changemaker is not something anybody has on their bucket list.

이것은 그냥 벌어지는 일입니다.

여러분을 움직이게 하는 일이죠.

It isn't something kids aspire to become when they grow up.

그것은 경험일수도,

벌어지는 불의일수도 있습니다.

It's something that just happens.

크건 작건, 지역적인지 전세계적인지 관계 없이요.

Something activates you.

그리고 참여하는 것 외에는 거의 다른 선택의 여지가 없습니다.

An experience,

an injustice that takes place,

big or small, local or global.

지난 몇 년 동안,

저는 다른 학생들의 교실에서 더 많은 시간을 보냈습니다.

And then there is almost no choice but to get involved.

제 교실보다 말이죠.

리더십의 원칙과

In the last few years,

지속가능성, 체인지메이커 기술에 대해 공유하면서요.

I have spent more time in other students' classrooms

그리고 젊은이들은 효과적으로 활동할 수 있는 기술과 지식을

than in my own,

sharing principles of leadership,

sustainability and changemaker skills.

갈망하고 있다고 자신 있게 말할 수 있습니다.

And I can say with confidence that young people are aching for skills

진정한 변화는 교실에서 시작될 수 있지만,

교실은 점점 현실과는 거리가 멀어지고 있습니다.

and knowledge that will allow them to act effectively today.

Real change can start in the classroom,

저는 지금이 바로 우리가 학교에서 배우고 있는 수업에

but the classroom has an increasingly distant relationship with reality.

현실에서 일어나고 있는 일을 반영할 적기라고 생각합니다.

I think it is high time to ensure that what we learn in the classrooms

그리고 세계 곳곳 모든 학생들이

reflect what is happening outside of them.

최소 한 시간 동안 기후위기와

And to ensure that every single student

지속가능한 개발 목표에 대해 의무 교육을 받아야 한다고 생각합니다.

in every corner of the world has at least one hour a day

모든 지속 가능한 혁신과

of mandatory lessons about the climate crisis, the 17 SDGs

오늘날 세상의 현실에 대해서도요.

유치원에서부터 졸업할 때까지요.

and about any sustainable innovations,

의무적으로 말이죠.

about the realities of today's world.

저는 굳게 믿습니다.

모든 젊은이들이 체인지메이커가 될 수 있다고요.

From kindergarten through to graduation.

하지만 어떻게 시작해야 하는지 알아가는 데에 도움이 필요합니다.

And I mean mandatory.

I strongly believe

학교가 변화하기를 기다리는 동안,

that every young person can be a changemaker.

다시 한번 저와 동료들은 각자 배움의 여정을 만듭니다.

But often they need help knowing where and how to start.

그때, 저는 YOUTHTOPIA라는 네트워크를 시작하게 되었는데요,

And while we wait for the classrooms to adapt,

once again, my peers and I create our own learning journey.

이는 젊은 체인지메이커들이 서로 배울 수 있는 플랫폼입니다.

That is when I started a network called the Circle of Youth within YOUTHTOPIA,

우리에겐 영향력 있는 롤모델과 긍정적인 이야기,

a platform for young changemakers to learn from each other.

어떤 행동을 취해야 할지 알려줄 실제 사례가 필요하며

We need role models and positive stories with an impact,

우리는 이를 또래에게서 봐야합니다.

제가 시리아 출신 피난민 교육가

real-life examples of how we can take action

모하마드 알 존데를 알았으면 좋았을텐데요.

and we need to see this from people our age.

나무 심기 활동가이자 기업가인 독일 출신의 펠릭스 핑크바이너와

I wish I would have known refugee educator Mohamad Al Jounde from Syria,

성평등 운동가인 인도네시아 출신 페이 시만준딱도요.

tree planter and entrepreneur Felix Finkbeiner from Germany,

제가 12살이었을 때 말이죠.

이분들과 연락하면서

or gender equality activist Faye Simanjuntak from Indonesia

아이디어와 경험을 나눌 수 있으면 좋았을 텐데 말이에요.

when I was 12 years old.

덧붙이자면 젊은이들의 참여도가 증가하며

And I wish that I could have been able to jump on a call with them

무시무시한 새 트렌드가 시작되었습니다.

and share ideas and experiences.

“위장친환경(그린워싱)”이란 말이 가장 알맞겠죠.

Now, I have to add that with the rise in youth engagement,

a new scary trend has also set in.

여러분 모두 아시죠?

잘못된 인상을 심는 과정을 통해

The best way to describe it is maybe to refer to the word “greenwashing.”

기업의 제품이나 행동의 기후 친화적 이미지를 조장하는 것을 말하죠.

You all know it.

지금 우리 앞에 벌어지는 많은 것들은

It's the process of conveying a false impression

“유스워싱”이라고 할 수 있습니다.

about the climate friendliness of a company product or actions.

저희가 매일 받는 이메일이나 연락에 대해서는 모르시는 게 좋을 걸요.

What I see happening a lot at the moment

is something I would call “youthwashing.”

그냥 저희를 이용해서 어떻게든 좋아보이게 하거나

You don't want to know the emails and approaches we get on a daily basis

체크 표시나 하려는 회사로부터 받는 메일과 연락 말입니다.

본인의 브랜드를 청소년 기후 활동가들과 연관 짓는 것은

from companies that want to use us for anything that sounds good

사업엔 좋아 보이겠지요.

비록 그 의도가 기후에도 좋은 영향을 주는 경우는 거의 드물지만요.

or just to tick off a box.

Associating one's brand with youth climate activists

저는 위장친환경을 하는 기업들에게

seems to be good for business,

although the intention rarely extends to being good for climate too.

말하고 싶습니다.

젊은이들을 기념촬영이나 박수갈채를 위해 초청하는 대신

So to the companies youthwashing,

아이디어 회의나 청중 없는 내부 워크샵에

I want to say,

자리를 마련해 주셨으면 합니다.

instead of inviting youth for the photo ops and the applause,

이사회 회의에 저희를 초대해서

offer us a seat during the brainstorming meetings,

역멘토링을 할 시간을 만들어주시거나요.

during the internal workshops with no audience.

분명 놀라실 겁니다.

Maybe invite us to one of your board meetings

지난 10년을 돌아보며

and ask us for some reverse mentoring sessions.

젊고 귀여운 소녀가 체인지메이커로 변화하는 치열한 여정을 회상합니다.

You might be surprised.

I look back at the last 10 years

다음 10년 동안

and see an intense journey from a young cute girl to a changemaker.

저는 전 세대가 일어나서

본보기가 되어 행동을 취하리라고 예상합니다.

For the next decade,

청소년 행동주의는 영감 그 이상입니다.

I see a whole generation that is rising,

우리는 변화에 진지합니다.

leading by example and taking action.
