I recently graduated college

on their feelings regarding the climate crisis.

A survey found that 56 percent of Gen-Zers,

the generation that I’m a part of

and the largest age demographic in the world,

believe that because of the climate crisis,

This felt like a punch in the gut.

I had just spent four and a half years

and tens of thousands of dollars studying these things:

countless time organizing on and off campus

and energy getting involved with both local and national groups,

yet most of my generation viewed it all as pointless.

Now if we look at the way that younger generations talk about the climate crisis,

these feelings of doom and despair make sense.

I mean, we’re drowning in bad climate news.

Headline after headline detail each week’s latest catastrophe.

And everything is amplified on social media

where there’s a remarkable lack of nuance

and an oversupply of attention-grabbing rhetoric.

Many of us, including myself,

seem to believe that if we just share these awareness posts enough times

that someone somewhere will finally do something about it.

But unfortunately, Joe Biden probably doesn't follow you on Instagram,

I’m part of a diverse, 19-person-strong collective

and we use social media to share nuanced climate education through infographics,

Our comments sections are filled with people who have given up hope.

People who say they have weekly anxiety attacks

about the climate crisis.

Or that they don’t want to have kids anymore

out of fear of adding to the suffering.

Or that they see no point in taking action

Our generation and younger generations

need a new way of addressing the climate crisis

that unshackles us from the cycles of doom and gloom

that so often lead to inaction,

because we cannot play a part in making change

if we do not believe that change is possible.

Climate denialism,

which for decades has been peddled by oil, gas and other big business interests,

has met its rival:

climate doomism.

The belief that we cannot save our planet,

so why take action?

Though they differ in origin,

both have the ability to paralyze action and prevent progress.

And though things are bad,

they’re far from over.

So how do we find hope when things feel hopeless,

the inextricable link between hope and action?

To answer this,

let me take you back to March of 2020 --

absolutely no one’s first choice of when to time travel to.

Many of us were quarantined in our homes,

people had stopped going out and socializing,

yet the stream and virality of bad news certainly had not stopped.

I was finishing up my semester at home,

저는 집에서 학기를 마치던 중이었고

as well as working to move my activism online

제가 참여하는 사회 운동을 온라인으로 옮겨가고 있었습니다.

when I was hit, not only with COVID

코로나뿐만 아니라 번아웃이 찾아왔고

but also with burnout.

I began to question the efficacy of my work,

제 활동이 가진 효과와 환경 보전을 향한 열정에 대해

my passion for environmentalism

의심하기 시작했습니다.

and the purpose in studying what I was studying.

제가 공부하려는 목적까지도요.

I knew I needed something to inspire me.

저를 자극할 무언가가 필요하다는 걸 알았죠.

I was scrolling on social media,

소셜 미디어를 보다가 긍정적인 소식을 공유하는 친구를 보았고

and I saw a friend who had been sharing positive news stories.

I paired this with the rise of feel-good dance videos that had really emerged

이런 소식들을 틱톡에서 유행하는 댄스 비디오와 연결하면 어떨까

on TikTok

하고 생각했습니다.

and started a series called “Weekly Earth Wins.”

그리하여 ‘주간 지구 성과’라는 연재물을 시작했습니다.

Here's a look at one of those videos.

So at first this felt really, really silly.

처음에는 정말, 정말 웃기는 일 같았어요.

I mean, what did dancing have to do with climate action?

춤이 환경 운동에 무슨 도움이 되나요?

And what good was sharing good news when everything felt so bad?

모든 것이 부정적으로 보일 때 긍정적인 소식을 전하는 게 무슨 도움이 될까요?

But then I began to receive people's feedback.

그런데 사람들의 반응이 보이기 시작했어요.

People told me

사람들이 말하기를,

that these videos really helped mitigate their climate anxiety,

제 영상이 환경에 대한 불안감을 줄이는 데 도움이 되었다면서

that they looked forward to these videos week after week

매주 영상이 올라오기를 기다리고 있고

and that these videos helped turn their anger and anxiety into action.

분노와 불안을 직접적인 행동으로 옮기는 데에도 영상이 도움이 되었다고 합니다.

So I continued making them.

그 말에 저는 활동을 이어 나갔죠.

And in the process of finding good news stories to share,

그리고 공유할 만한 좋은 소식을 찾다 보니

I began to pick up on trends.

서서히 동향에 대해 파악하기 시작했습니다.

Week after week,

시간이 지날수록

institutions were divesting from fossil fuels.

여러 기관은 화석 연료를 줄여 나가고 있었고

Week after week,

시간이 지날수록

land was given back to Indigenous communities.

원주민들이 땅을 돌려받고 있었습니다.

And week after week,

그리고 시간이 지날수록

states were implementing renewable energy standards.

I never overlooked the scientific projections or data,

but rather tuned in

to the hard-to-find good news stories

and examples of successful on-the-ground work.

And in the process,

I uncovered the framework that I had been yearning for:

climate optimism.

환경 낙관론입니다.

Climate optimism is a framework based on the idea

환경 낙관론은 부정적인 전망과 불안정한 상황 속에서도

that despite the bleak projections and the high stakes,

우리는 지구를 다시 건강하게 돌려놓을 수 있다는

we can restore our planet back to health,

발상에 기반한 것입니다.

and in doing so,

그리고 이를 통해 지구에 살아가는 모든 것을 지키는 겁니다.

protect all that inhabit it.

Climate optimism is what gives us hope when things feel hopeless,

환경 낙관론은 절망적인 상황 속에서 희망을 주고,

is what sustains us in our pursuit of sustainability

지속 가능성을 지속적으로 추구하도록 하며,

and is what fuels us in the uphill battle of transitioning away from fossil fuels.

화석 연료에서 벗어나는 어려운 싸움을 지속할 연료가 됩니다.

It’s also what gives us the energy to continue fighting for our successes.

그리고 성공을 향한 사투를 이어 나갈 에너지가 되어줄 것입니다.

Virtually, the zero-emissions energy source that nobody talks about.

사실상 아무도 모르던 무공해 에너지원인 거죠.

So in this process,

I realize also that climate optimism is not for everybody.

모두가 환경 낙관론을 이용할 자격은 없다는 것입니다.

Climate optimism is not for politicians who have stalled on action

실질적인 행동이 없는 정치가들이나

or corporations who have incessantly pursued profits over people.

사람보다 이익을 중요시하는 기업들은 환경 낙관론을 이용할 자격이 없습니다.

To them, my message is clear:

그들에게 제가 전할 말은 분명합니다.

listen to science and act now.

과학에 귀기울이고 지금 행동하세요.

Stop failing the citizens and people that you have a duty to serve.

당신이 헌신해야 할 시민들을 실망시키지 마세요.

Rather, climate optimism is for those of us here today ...

환경 낙관론은 여기 모인 여러분,

that have dedicated our lives

to fighting the greatest battle of our time.

But also to the part-time activists:

those who do what they can, when they can.

to the marginalized communities and people in the Global South,

The need for climate optimism has never been more urgent.

If we limit our vision of the future to one filled with oil rigs,

smokestacks

공장의 연기 굴뚝,

and suffering,

we limit our capacity

우리는 스스로의 역량을 제한하고

and shirk our duty to change the course of humanity for the better.

By looking for good and working towards the good,

좋은 면을 바라보고 올바른 것을 향해 가면

we empower ourselves to be agents of good

우리는 올바른 편에 서서 행동하는 사람으로서

in the fight for the future that we deserve.

우리가 누려야 할 미래를 위해 싸울 수 있습니다.

The alternative --

그 반대로,

giving up hope --

희망을 저버리는 것은

only relinquishes power

into the very entities that have gotten us into this mess.

Luckily, I’m not alone in championing this movement.
