The minute she said it,

when the N-word entered my classroom.

I was in my first year of teaching

when the student said the N-word in my class.

She was not calling anyone a name.

She was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

As soon as she said it, I held up my hands, said, "Whoa, whoa."

But she assured me,

This all happened 10 years ago,

and how I handled it haunted me for a long time.

It wasn't the first time I thought about the word

in an academic setting.

I'm a professor of US history,

it's in a lot of the documents that I teach.

So I had to make a choice.

After consulting with someone I trusted,

I decided to never say it.

and I worried that senior colleagues

The incident in my classroom forced me to publicly reckon with the word.

The history, the violence,

The history, the violence, but also any time it was hurled at me,

A point of encounter describes the moment you came face-to-face with the N-word.

If you've even been stumped or provoked by the word,

whether as the result of an awkward social situation,

여러분이 어색한 사회적 상황에 있거나,

an uncomfortable academic conversation,

불편한 학구적인 대화에 끼어 있거나,

something you heard in pop culture,

or if you've been called the slur,

아니면 그 말로 공격을 받았거나

or witnessed someone getting called the slur,

you have experienced a point of encounter.

And depending on who you are and how that moment goes down,

you might have a range of responses.

Could throw you off a little bit,

or it could be incredibly painful and humiliating.

I've had lots of these points of encounter in my life,

but one thing is true.

There's not a lot of space to talk about them.

That day in my classroom was pretty much like all of those times

I had an uninvited run-in with the N-word.

I froze.

Because the N-word is hard to talk about.

Part of the reason the N-word is so hard to talk about,

it's usually only discussed in one way,

as a figure of speech, we hear this all the time, right?

It's just a word.

The burning question that cycles through social media

is who can and cannot say it.

Black intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates does a groundbreaking job

of defending the African American use of the word.

On the other hand, Wendy Kaminer,

a white freedom of speech advocate,

argues that if we don't all just come and say it,

The Pew Center recently entered the debate.

researchers asked US adults if they thought is was OK

Seventy percent of all adults surveyed said "never."

And these debates are important.

But they really obscure something else.

They keep us from getting underneath to the real conversation.

Which is that the N-word is not just a word.

It's not neatly contained in a racist past,

Fundamentally, the N-word is an idea disguised as a word:

that black people are intellectually,

and immutably inferior to white people.

And -- and I think this is the most important part --

that that inferiority means that the injustice we suffer

Speaking of the word only as racist spew

located in the American vocal cords

that can be snipped right out.

It's not, and it can't.

And I learned this from talking to my students.

So next time class met,

I apologized,

and I made an announcement.

I would have a new policy.

Students would see the word in my PowerPoints,

in film, in essays they read,

but we would never ever say the word out loud in class.

Nobody ever said it again.

But they didn't learn much either.

Afterwards, what bothered me most

was that I didn't even explain to students

why, of all the vile, problematic words in American English,

why this particular word had its own buffer,

the surrogate phrase "the N-word."

Most of my students,

many of them born in the late 1990s and afterwards,

didn't even know that the phrase "the N-word"

is a relatively new invention in American English.

When I was growing up, it didn't exist.

They knew their listeners would hear the actual word in their heads.

That wasn't the point.

The point was they didn't want to put the word in their own mouths

By doing this,

they made an entire nation start to second-guess themselves

This was such a radical move

Critics accuse those of us who use the phrase "the N-word,"

The N-word in academic spaces, for or against?

I was certain students would be eager

to debate who gets to say it and who doesn't.

my students started confessing.

A white student from New Jersey talked about standing by

as a black kid at her school got bullied by this word.

She did nothing and years later still carried the guilt.

Another from Connecticut

talked about the pain of severing

a very close relationship with a family member,

because that family member refused to stop saying the word.

One of the most memorable stories came from a very quiet black student

from South Carolina.

She didn't understand all the fuss.

She said everyone at her school said the word.

She wasn't talking about kids calling each other names in the hall.

became frustrated with an African American student,

But then a couple of days later,

Over the last 10 years,

I have literally heard hundreds of these stories

is Mark Twain’s "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"

in which the word appears over 200 times.

And this isn't an indictment of "Huck Finn."

The word is in lots of US literature and history.

It's all over African American literature.

Yet I hear from students

that when the word is said during a lesson

without discussion and context,

it poisons the entire classroom environment.

The trust between student and teacher is broken.

Even so, many teachers,

often with the very best of intentions,

They want to show and emphasize the horrors of US racism,

so they rely on it for shock value.

Invoking it brings into stark relief

the ugliness of our nation's past.

the ideas are alive and well in our cultural fabric.

The six-letter word is like a capsule of accumulated hurt.

Every time it is said, every time,

it releases into the atmosphere the hateful notion

has reached such a fevered pitch,

Smith College, where I teach,

My students are not afraid of materials that have the N-word in it.

I was astonished to learn

And I wish I had more time to talk

about the long, subversive history of the black use of the N-word.

But I will say this:

하지만 이 말은 꼭 하고 싶습니다.

Many times, my students will come up to me and say,

지금까지 많은 학생들에 저에게 와서

"I understand the virulent roots of this word, it's slavery."

"이 단어의 악성적인 근원을 알아요. 노예제도예요." 라고 말하는데,

They are only partially right.

부분적으로만 맞는 얘기예요.

This word, which existed before it became a slur,

이 단어는 모욕적인 욕설이 되기 전에도 존재하던 단어였지만

but it becomes a slur at a very distinct moment in US history,

미국사의 아주 뚜렷한 순간에 모욕적인 욕설이 되었죠.

and that's as large numbers of black people begin to become free,

바로 1820년대에 미 북부에서부터 시작해

starting in the North in the 1820s.

많은 흑인들이 자유를 찾던 그 시기였습니다.

In other words,

this word is fundamentally an assault on black freedom,

근본적으로 이 단어는 흑인의 자유,

black mobility,

and black aspiration.

그리고 포부에 대한 모욕이라는 것입니다.

Even now,

nothing so swiftly unleashes an N-word tirade

as a black person asserting their rights

or going where they please or prospering.

"N-word"가 난무하는 상황이 없습니다.

Think of the attacks on Colin Kaepernick when he kneeled.

Or Barack Obama when he became president.

My students want to know this history.

But when they ask questions, they're shushed and shamed.

하지만 질문을 하면 입 다물라고, 부끄러운 줄 알라고 하죠.

By shying away from talking about the N-word,

우리 사회가 "N-word"에 대해 얘기하는 것을 꺼리게 되면서

we have turned this word into the ultimate taboo,

이 단어는 미국의 아이들이 인종에 상관 없이

crafting it into something so tantalizing,

성인이 되는 과정 중에서

that for all US kids,

이 단어를 어떻게 사용할 것인지

no matter their racial background,

결정해야 하는

part of their coming of age is figuring out

최고로 금기적이고

how to negotiate this word.

감질나는 단어가 되었습니다.

We treat conversations about it like sex before sex education.

마치 성교육 전에 갖는 성관계처럼 취급합니다.

We're squeamish, we silence them.

비위가 약해서 묵살해버리죠.

So they learn about it from misinformed friends and in whispers.

그래서 결국 아이들은 잘못 알고 있는 친구들에게서 배울 수 밖에 없습니다.

I wish I could go back to the classroom that day

저는 그 때의 수업 시간으로 돌아가서

and push through my fear

저의 두려움을 떨쳐내고

to talk about the fact that something actually happened.

분명 무슨 일이 일어났다는 사실을 얘기할 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

Not just to me or to my black students.

저나 제 흑인 학생들 뿐만이 아니라

But to all of us.

우리 모두에게요.

You know, I think

저는 우리가

we're all connected by our inability to talk about this word.

이 단어에 대해 얘기할 수 없다는 제약으로 이어져 있다고 생각합니다.

But what if we explored our points of encounter

and did start to talk about it?

Today, I try to create the conditions in my classroom

요즘 저는 마음을 터놓고 솔직하게 토론할 수 있도록

to have open and honest conversations about it.

수업 중 조건을 내겁니다.

One of those conditions -- not saying the word.

그 조건 중 하나는 그 단어를 얘기하지 않는 거예요.

We're able to talk about it

교실에서 직접 그 단어를 말하지 않기 때문에

because it doesn't come into the classroom.

그 단어에 대해서 토론할 수 있게 됩니다.

Another important condition

또 다른 중요한 조건은

is I don't make my black students responsible

저희 흑인 학생들에게 이것에 대해

for teaching their classmates about this.

다른 학생들을 가르칠 책임을 묻지 않는다는 겁니다.

That is my job.

그건 제가 할 일이니까요.

So I come prepared.

그래서 전 수업 준비를 하고

I hold the conversation with a tight rein,

대화를 이끌 고삐를 꼭 쥐고

and I'm armed with knowledge of the history.

역사 지식으로 무장하고 들어갑니다.

I always ask students the same question:

저는 학생들에게 항상 같은 질문을 던집니다.

Why is talking about the N-word hard?

N-word"에 대해 얘기하는 것이 왜 이렇게 어려운 걸까요?

Their answers are amazing.

학생들의 답은 아주 대단합니다.

They're amazing.

대단한 학생들이에요.

More than anything though,

하지만 그 무엇보다도

I have become deeply acquainted with my own points of encounter,

저는 제 자신의 대면의 순간과 이 단어를 둘러싼

my personal history around this word.

저의 개인적인 역사를 더 밀접하게 알게 됐어요.

Because when the N-word comes to school,

왜냐하면 "N-word"가 학교나

or really anywhere,

어떤 장소에서든지 사용되게 된다면

it brings with it all of the complicated history of US racism.

미국의 아주 복잡한 인종차별주의도 같이 딸려오기 때문입니다.

The nation's history

바로 지금, 바로 여기 일어나고 있는

and my own,

이 나라의 역사와

right here, right now.

저의 역사 말입니다.

There's no avoiding it.

피할 수 없는 것이죠.
