When we look at poor smallholder farmers across the world,

and particularly in my country, India,

we often think that what they need is access to better tools,

education, government support, markets and so on.

Yes, they need all that.

But what they really need is a reliable and regular income

그들에게 정말로 필요한 건, 인간으로서의 품위를 지킬 수 있는

to live with dignity.

안정적이고 일정한 수입입니다.

A dependable income,

일정한 수입 말이죠.

even if it is as small as 100 dollars a month,

한 달에 100달러라는 적은 금액도

is essential for them to stay out of poverty.

영세 농민이 빈곤을 벗어나기 위해 꼭 필요한 돈이거든요.

Today, their incomes are in and out of poverty,

오늘날, 영세 농민의 수입은 빈곤선을 들락날락합니다.

which is extremely painful.

너무도 고통스러운 일이죠.

Growing up in South India,

남인도에서 자라나면서

I could not overlook what poverty did to our farmers.

저는 가난이 농부들에게 한 짓을 간과할 수 없었어요.

I was about 17 years old when one day,

제가 아직 17살이던 어느 날이었습니다.

I saw a farmer in my village sitting next to a farm stream

제가 살던 마을에서 한 농부가 농장 개울가에 앉더니

and eating something from the ground.

땅에서 무언가를 주워 먹더군요.

Something did not seem right.

먹어선 안 될 무언가를요.

I walked up to him to see what was going on.

무슨 일인지 확인하려고 그 농부에게 다가갔더니

I was shocked to see him eat mud.

진흙을 먹고 있었어요. 전 충격을 받았죠.

Mud.

진흙이요.

Brown, soft mud from the stream.

시냇물에서 나온 갈색의 부드러운 진흙이었어요.

I was afraid he might die.

저는 그 농부가 죽을지도 모른단 생각에 겁이 나 소리쳤어요.

I yelled at him.

"What is this stupid mud-eating business?"

“진흙을 먹다니 제정신이세요?”

He looked at me helplessly and said,

그 농부가 저를 무기력하게 쳐다보더니 말하더군요.

"I'm a farmer, my crops failed;

“농사를 짓는데 농작물이 다 망했어요.”

my stomach doesn't know that my pocket is empty."

“그런데 내 뱃속 거지는 내가 가난하단 걸 몰라요.”

I walked away quite helplessly.

전 힘없이 자리를 떴어요.

That night, I shared this with my grandfather.

그날 밤, 그날 일을 할아버지에게 얘기했어요.

He was a remarkable man, very clever.

할아버지는 아주 현명하고 훌륭하신 분이었어요.

He was a part of the Indian freedom struggle

마하트마 간디의 지도 아래

under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

자유 투쟁했던 분이셨고요.

Unlike me, he wasn't surprised at all.

저와는 달리, 할아버지는 전혀 놀라지 않으셨죠.

He knew of people who added rice starch to mud

배고픔을 달래려 흙에 전분을 섞는 사람들을 알고 계셨으니까요.

to calm their hunger.

And he told me something profound.

그러더니 심오한 말씀을 하셨는데,

If you see a person walking on the road without footwear,

누군가 신발 없이 길을 걸어 다니는 걸 보게 되거든

it is important to understand the root cause:

그 사람은 어쩌면 신발 살 돈이 없어 그러는 거라는 ‘근본적인 이유’를

that the person doesn't have enough money to probably buy the footwear.

아는 게 중요하단 얘기였어요.

I finished my college,

전 대학을 졸업했고

started working with a big company,

대기업에서 일하게 됐습니다.

but that incident kept coming back to me.

하지만 그때의 사건을 떨쳐낼 수가 없더군요.

Why are smallholder farmers in such abject poverty?

왜 영세 농민은 그리도 빈곤할까요?

What causes them to be so desperate,

무엇이 그들을 절망스럽게 하는 걸까요?

and why is it that, even in 21st-century India,

21세기의 인도에서는, 왜 아직도

one farmer dies by suicide every 51 minutes?

51분마다 한 명의 농부가 자살을 하는 걸까요?

My cofounders and I spent about six months traveling across India,

저와 공동 설립자는 약 6개월 동안 인도 전역을 다니며

meeting hundreds of farmers to listen to them.

수백 명의 농부를 만나 그들의 얘기를 들어봤습니다.

It became clear that climate risk is the root cause

‘기후 위험’이 농업을 예측하기 힘들고, 실행 불가능하게 하는

that causes farming to be unpredictable and unviable.

근본 원인이란 게 분명했습니다.

Farmers who make reasonable money in one season

한 계절에 적당한 돈을 벌었던 농부들이

can fail miserably in the next.

다음 계절에는 실패를 맛볼 수 있어요.

And farmers who could grow crops earlier in summers

초여름 작물 재배가 가능했던 농부들은

no longer get to grow crops in summers.

더는 여름에 작물을 재배할 수 없게 됐습니다.

Heat is so much more.

더위가 극심해졌거든요.

The wells are drying up,

우물은 말라 가고

every year, there are new varieties of pests and diseases.

매년, 새로운 종류의 해충과 질병이 등장합니다.

Farmers told us that this is all because of because of God.

농부들은 이게 다 신 때문이라고 하더군요.

I said, "What?"

무슨 말이냐고 물으니 그러더군요.

"This is all because of God."

“이게 다 신 때문이야.”

God is the one who caused it, God is the only one who can solve it.

“신이 한 일이니, 신만이 해결할 수 있어.”

God, in that context, I did not see as a sign of hope.

그 맥락에서 ‘신’은 ‘희망’의 상징이 아니라

I read it as a sign of helplessness.

‘무력감’의 상징처럼 들렸어요.

We heard from the farmers.

농부들의 얘기를 들어보니

They knew the problem,

다들 뭐가 문제인지 알고 있었지만

but they could not use these two words: "climate risk."

“기후 위험“이라는 개념은 쓰지 않더군요.

So we got together a team of engineers,

그래서 우리는 6개국의 엔지니어,

scientists, designers from about six countries,

과학자, 디자이너로 구성된 팀을 꾸려

to cocreate a solution with our farmers,

농부들과 함께 해결 방법을 찾아봤어요.

which is quite unconventional.

전에 없던 일이었죠.

And the solution is “greenhouse-in-a-box.”

그 해결책은 “상자 안 온실“이라는 건데요,

We call it "Kheyti Rakshak."

인도에서는 “Kheyti Rakshak.“이라고 부릅니다.

It’s a micro-greenhouse.

초소형 온실이에요.

It's a beautiful greenhouse

농부의 경작지에서

which sits in a small portion of the farmer's land.

작은 공간을 차지하는 아름다운 온실이죠.

It's easy to build, a small structure,

설치하는 것도 쉬운 이 작은 구조물은

covered with netting on all sides,

온 사방이 그물로 덮여 있어

which cuts off heat, prevents bugs and saves water.

열을 차단하고, 벌레의 침입을 막고, 물을 절약합니다.

We can't cool the entire planet in one day,

하루아침에 지구 온난화를 막을 순 없지만

but we definitely can create a climate for a small portion of a farmer’s land

경작지 일부에서 농사짓기에 적당한 기후를

to be suitable for farming.

만들 순 있죠.

From our first experiences of growing vegetables --

이 온실에서 토마토, 양배추, 오이와 같은 주요 채소를

staple vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers --

재배해 본 결과,

we observed that greenhouses can increase yields up to seven times

온실 덕분에 수확량을 최대 7배까지 늘렸고,

and use 90 percent less water.

90%의 물을 절약할 수 있었어요.

All this was too good to be true.

믿기 힘든 결과였죠.

All these things are so difficult to happen,

불가능에 가까운 일이었기 때문에

so farmers couldn't believe it, unless they actually saw it in action.

실제로 보기 전까진 농부들도 믿지 못하더군요.

So to make this happen,

이 연구를 위해

we had to have the courage to reimagine agriculture --

우리는 농업에 대해 다시 생각해봐야 했어요.

reimagine agriculture for smallholder farmers.

영세 농민들의 농업에 대해서요.

After all, this is not to grow tomatoes in an industrial setting in Alaska

산업 시설을 갖춘 알래스카에서 토마토를 재배하는 것과는

in winters.

거리가 먼일이니까요.

It is to grow tomatoes for a smallholder farmer,

이건 영세 농부들을 위한 일이에요.

by a smallholder farmer, in sizzling hot Indian summers.

뜨거운 인도의 여름에 토마토를 기르는 영세 농부들 말이죠.

So this greenhouse had to be small enough to fit in a portion of their land,

그래서 이 온실은, 경작지의 일부만을 차지할 정도로 작아야 하고,

easy enough for them to use

농부들이 이용하기 쉬워야 하며,

and cheap enough for them to buy.

저렴한 가격이어야 했어요.

One of the biggest challenges that we could overcome in the process

그 과정에서 넘어야 했던 가장 큰 산은

is financing.

자금 조달이었습니다.

Thanks to our financing partners,

우리의 자금 조달 담당자 덕분에

today, this greenhouse is available with financing

지금은 빠르고 저렴한 자금 조달로

which is fast enough and cheap enough.

이 온실을 얻을 수 있습니다.

The greenhouse costs about 1,000 dollars.

온실의 비용은 약 1,000달러로

Farmers pay a down payment of about 100 dollars,

농부들은 약 100달러의 계약금을 지불하고

and the rest is financed through a loan.

대출을 통해 나머지 자금을 조달할 수 있죠.

And this life-changing asset

농부들의 삶을 바꿔줄 이 자산은

adds and extra 100 dollars of profit, on average, to a household,

매달 한 가구당, 평균 100달러의 추가 수익을 냅니다.

month on month.

This is a good double of what they otherwise make.

온실 없이 벌 수 있는 수익의 두 배 금액이죠.

Marginal, five-ten percent increases in the incomes of smallholder farmers

기본 소득이 너무도 낮기 때문에

cannot move the needle forward much,

수익이 5-10% 증가한다고 해서 영세 농부들의 삶이

because the baseline is way too low.

크게 달라질 순 없습니다.

We need a significant jump in their income,

농민의 임금 수준은 큰 폭으로 상승해야 하고

and that income has to be reliable and dependable.

일정하고 안정적인 수입이어야만 합니다.

To ensure that farmers succeed,

더 나은 농민들의 삶을 위해

we also provide quality seeds, nutrition,

우리는 좋은 품질의 씨앗, 비료, 교육

training and advisory leveraging mobile technology.

그리고 모바일 기술을 통한 자금 자문을 제공합니다.

We rolled out the solution, after quite a few tests with farmers,

약 3년 전, 농민들과 여러 번의 시행을 거쳐 솔루션을 출시했고

about three years ago,

and we are marching towards 2,000 farmers in this year

올해에는 2천 명의 농민과 협업 중인데

and looking at 100,000 farmers over the next five years.

향후 5년간 10만 명의 농민을 대상으로 사업을 확장하려고 합니다.

Hopefully, every smallholder farmer in my lifetime.

제가 눈 감기 전까지 모든 영세 농민을 만나봤으면 좋겠네요.

The best technologies in agriculture can reach the smallest of the farmers

영세 농민이 최고의 농업 기술을 누리려면

if we do two things well:

우리는 두 가지를 잘해야 합니다.

listen to the farmer with curiosity, empathy and compassion,

호기심, 공감, 연민을 가지고 농민들의 말에 귀 기울이는 것과

and keep smallholder farmers, particularly women farmers,

영세 농민, 특히 여성 농부들을 설계의 중심에 두고

at the center of the design,

솔루션을 구축하는 겁니다.

and build solutions.

Then, we can cocreate mini solutions like Kheyti Rakshak,

그렇게 하면, 농민의 삶에 존엄, 희망, 안정을 가져다주는

which bring dignity, hope and stability to the lives of the farmers.

‘Kheyti Rakshak’같은 작은 규모의 솔루션을 만들 수 있어요.

In this big fight against climate change,

기후 변화와의 전쟁에서 우리는

we all have to remember that we should take our smallholder farmers along;

영세 농민과 함께 싸워나가야 한단 사실을 기억해야 합니다.

it is our collective responsibility.

우리의 공동 책임이니까요.

India is a home for about 100 million smallholder farmers.

인도는 약 1억 명에 달하는 영세 농민들의 고향입니다.

I dream of a day

저는 “영세 농민“이

when "smallholder farmer" becomes synonymous with a happy farmer,

“행복한 농민“을 의미하는 날이 오길 꿈꿉니다.

and being forced to eat mud should never be a feature again, anywhere.

그리고 어디서든, 진흙을 먹어야 하는 상황은 절대로 일어나선 안 됩니다.
