REAL ENGLISH CONVERSATION | Learn Real English From Real English Conversations Episode 5

Hey in today's lesson, I'm going to teach you how to sound more

like a native English speaker.

As we observe a short clip of an English conversation, I am going to

break down the words and expressions so that you can start sounding like me.

Are you ready?

Well, then I have teacher Tiffani.

Let's jump right in.

So we're going to take a look at a short clip from a

conversation I had with one of my.

The topic was responsibility.

So pay attention to the new words and the new expressions.

Here we go.

Okay.

Then this is a little bit different.

This is more about companies still doing responsibility, but what should

companies do to protect the environment?

Basically what responsibility do companies have as it relates to the environment?

You know, nowadays we're talking about the green, you know,

green peace and all that stuff.

I mean the first couple of things that pop into my head.

Not using as much paper so that we don't cut down as many trees.

So we have cleaner air.

Um, and then something that I'm not as familiar with, but I know that it impacts

with the water and toxic stuff that needs to be properly disposed of as opposed

to, oh, we're just going to pull it down here or we're going to pour it out here.

So those are things that I think companies should take into consideration

ways to dispose properly dispose of toxic chemicals that they may

use when they make certain things and, um, reducing the use of paper.

So I guess that's kind of a way that technology has helped because you

don't have as much of a paper trail.

And then if something happens like with fire, with a fire

or natural disasters yeah.

And other places, so you don't absolutely lose everything.

Yeah, I agree.

I agree.

I think they have to be mindful of what they're using and how

it's affecting the environment.

I agree.

So that was a short clip from our conversation, but you notice there

were so many new words and expressions that we used very naturally.

So I'm going to break down some of those expressions and words

to help you sound like us.

So the first part of the conversation, this is what was said.

Then this is a little bit different.

This is more about companies still dealing with responsibility, but what should

companies do to protect the environment at this part of the conversation?

I was asking my friend Chanel.

I wanted to know her a bit.

But notice I used dealing with dealing with, so what does this actually

mean dealing with now dealing with actually means to be about or be on

the subject of something again, to be about or on the subject of something.

Here we go.

For example, I am teaching you English, right?

So this lesson is dealing with or deals with English and teaching

you how to speak English.

Fluently is my purpose, right?

This lesson is dealing with English.

Makes sense.

Right.

So look at this, this English lesson deals with English, here's an example sentence.

Her new movie deals.

The relationship between a woman and her sick daughter.

The movie is about the movie is connected to the subject of the

woman and her sick daughter.

Again, in English, we say dealing with dealing with this lesson

deals with English makes sense.

So the next part of the conversation was also very important in the

next part of the conversation.

This is what was said, basically what responsibility do companies have

as it relates to the environment.

You know, nowadays we're talking about the green, you know,

green peace and all that stuff.

So you see, I was still breaking down the question for my French.

But in my breaking down of the question, what did I say?

As it relates to, again, what you're learning, you're learning the expressions,

the phrases, the words that native English speakers use a natural conversations,

and you need to start using them as well.

So as it relates to.

What does this mean?

Relate to, it means to connect something with something else, again, connecting

something with something else.

For example, they didn't relate their symptoms to the food

they eaten the day before.

Again, they didn't relate or connect their symptoms to the

food they eaten the day before.

Now I want you to stay until the end, because for story time,

I'm going to tell you a story about the first time I ate beef.

Trust me, you don't want to miss this.

But I also want to explain something more about this expression relate to,

again, they didn't relate their symptoms to the food they eat in the day before.

So real quick, I'm going to give you an extra story.

Relate to this happened when I was still at my parents' home

about maybe a few, six months ago.

Again, I was building my business.

So my family, my parents were letting me stay with.

And we were still in the midst of the pandemic, the pandemic

where COVID was very rampant.

Lot of people were getting COVID.

Now I've been staying with my parents and I mainly stayed at home

because I was working very hard.

But one day I started getting really cold.

It was the summertime, but I was walking around the house, wrapped in

a blanket and I felt extremely cold.

And I would ask my parents, or you guys aren't called.

And they said, no, we're not cold there.

Remember I stayed at home mainly.

So I didn't really think about COVID.

I had seen a friend or two, but I didn't put two and two together.

There's another expression for you.

Two and two together.

I started getting cold.

I, I lost my appetite and I started having other symptoms, but I didn't

actually relate my symptoms to COVID.

You see, I actually did catch COVID.

Uh, maybe it's been a year.

Might've been a year.

But I caught COVID and my symptoms, I didn't relate my symptoms to COVID,

but eventually I found out that I did have COVID I made it through I'm.

Okay.

But I didn't relate my symptoms to COVID.

Right.

I didn't relate my symptoms to me catching COVID from my friend.

Makes sense.

Right.

Relate to now I'm going to continue with the conversation and

explaining the other expressions.

Okay.

Now, continuing on with the conversation, the next part of

the conversation went like this.

I mean the first couple of things that pop into my head.

Now my friend Chanel started answering my question and this was

part of her response notice though, that she said pop into my head.

So pop into my head.

This just means to suddenly.

Think of something suddenly something pops into your head.

Suddenly something comes up in your mind.

Here's an example sentence all at once and idea popped into her head.

Suddenly she started thinking about something.

Now I'll tell you about a time when this happened to me,

something popped into mind.

So I was in grad school in South Korea and I was studying Oriental

painting and it came to the end of my studies, where I had to take an exam.

The exam was going to be all in Korean plus Chinese letters.

It was a difficult exam.

And I was on my third time, the first two times I had failed.

So I walked into the test room and there were about a hundred students including.

Waiting to take the exam teacher placed the exam in front of me, and we all

waited for the instructions to start by.

No, the instructions were given and we took the test and we turned it

over and I can hear a pins writing behind me almost immediately.

So I read the question and I understood what the question was asking, but I

didn't know how to answer the quiz.

And I suddenly started to panic why it was my third time and I didn't

know how to answer the question.

I started praying God, please help me.

This is my third time taking this test.

And I started getting very stressed and all of a sudden

the answer popped into my head.

God had helped me.

He had answered my prayer and I knew the answer.

It popped into my head and I started writing and I passed praise God.

I passed that exam.

But you see what I'm saying?

Right.

I didn't know.

In the beginning, what the answer was, my mind was blank, but

suddenly it popped into my head and I started writing the answer.

So again, pop into my head.

It means to suddenly think of something.

Now what about the next part of the conversation and the

next part of the conversation?

This is what.

Um, and then something that I'm not as familiar with a mill

you're with, what does this mean?

Familiar with so familiar with means, you know, it, or you know

about it because you have a learned about it or experienced it before.

For example, if I say.

Five W's what am I referring to?

Who, what, when, where and why exactly, you know, the five W's

method, because you've seen my English lessons about the five W's method.

You are familiar with the five Ws method.

Exactly.

You have experience with it, or, you know it because you've

learned it before the five W's.

We say familiar with here's an example sentence.

The author assumes that his readers are familiar with certain

basic ideas, make sense, right.

He thinks they've learned about these ideas or they've

experienced them in English.

We say.

Familiar with just like you are familiar with my five W's method.

Who, what, when, where and why now in the next part of the conversation,

continuing, this is what was set.

So those are things that I think companies should take into consideration ways

to properly dispose of toxic chemicals that they may use when they make

certain things and reducing the use of.

Again, Chanel was continuing and giving the rest of her response, but

she said, take into consideration, take into consideration.

Now this just means to think about something before one makes a decision or

forms an opinion before you do something.

Think about this thing or think about this person.

Hey, before you walk out that door.

Take into consideration dot, dot dot, or before you do this, take

into consideration, think about this person, or think about this thing.

Take into consideration.

Here's the example sentence.

We will take your experience into consideration when we decide who

will get the job you've done.

Pretty good work.

We will consider your work, your experience.

We will take it into consideration, make sense.

Right.

So what we're going to do right now, now that you understand the

expressions that were used throughout our conversation, we're going to watch

it one more time and you'll be amazed by how much you actually understand.

You still there, you know what time it is?

It's story time.

I said it's story time.

All right.

So I told you that I was going to tell you a story about food and

symptoms and things of that nature.

This was about man, I think it's been 20.

No, it's probably been about 30 years.

About 30 years ago.

Uh, I was in elementary school, middle school, and I

was really hungry one morning.

And my uncle actually happened to be taking me to school that day.

He was taking me and also my friend were going to school and he asked

us if we were hungry and we're like, yes, uncle we're really hard.

He said, okay, I'm going to stop at the gas station and

get you guys some breakfast.

We were excited.

So we stopped at the gas station.

He said, all right, go inside.

Here's some money, get whatever you want.

So my friend and I, we ran inside and we saw that they had kind of what looked

like nachos, but they also had chili.

So my friend and I, we said, listen, we don't want a bag of chips.

We want a real meal.

So we said, okay.

So we went to the.

We piled the chips inside of our containers.

And then we put the chili, oh, it looks so good.

We put chili.

Then we put cheese on top and we were ready.

So we paid the money.

We went back out to the car and my uncle said, are you guys happy?

We said, oh yeah.

So he took us to school, dropped us off.

And it was a little early.

So class hadn't started yet.

So we were sitting down and we were punishing, which means we

were really eating the food fast.

It tasted so good.

We were licking our fingers.

This is the best chili I've ever had.

And the cheese was so good.

It was delicious.

So we finished our food and then class started.

We shared with our friends to, but class started and then all of a

sudden we'll be, we'll be booklet.

Our stomach started to feel a little weird.

We were like, whoa, what is that?

We were trying to stay focused in class, but our stomach started making more.

And all of us as a teacher, I need to go to the bathroom.

I don't know what's going on.

My stomach was killing me.

So I ran to the bathroom and it just kept cramping and hurting so bad, so

much so that they had to call my parents.

I said, we don't know what's wrong with TIFF, but she's really not feeling well.

And her stomach is really.

So I got on the phone with my parents and I think it was my mom.

And she said, honey, what happened?

I said, I don't know, my stomach hurts really bad.

I said, I, I ate breakfast.

My uncle stopped and we got some food at the gas station.

She said, let me ask you a question.

What did you get?

And I said, I got nachos with Chilean and with cheese, like we

have at home, we have haystacks.

Haystacks are basically taco salads.

She said, baby, did that chili have beans only?

Or did they have beans?

And.

I said, oh no, mommy.

They have beans and meat.

Like we have at the house.

She said, honey was the meat vegetarian because we're a vegetarian, we ate fish,

but we ate fish and Turkey, but we mainly didn't eat any beef or anything like that.

I said, no, mommy, I think it was vegetarian chili.

She said, baby, they don't have vegetarian chili at gas stations.

You just had beef.

Now up until that point, I had never had beef before.

She said, honey, I think you have food poisoning and

that's exactly what happened.

You see my body wasn't used to beef now my mouth, listen, it was delicious.

But since I was not used to eating meat, the moment I ate the meat, my

body started responding negatively.

So of course I had to go through the process.

Getting it out of my body, of course, but I will never forget that time

because it was such an enjoyable meal, but the results were not that enjoyable.

So maybe you've experienced that before where you ate something,

you shouldn't have been eating and you had to suffer the consequences.
