About his experiences teaching in Korea so we'll learn a lot about how he interacted

Usually in in Korea, a lot of the schools, or private schools,

they like Caucasian teachers.

Blond hair, blue eyes, yep.

And you are not Caucasian and we'll talk a little bit about that, too.

Okay so why don't you tell us about when you first came to Korea.

I first came to Korea... I think it was about 2015.

About 2015 when I first came to Korea.

In the States, I was working as a scientist.

I was doing that for a bit and then I wanted a little change.

And then I came to Korea.

I came with the Epik Program.

What is the Epik Program?

It's a government-run program.

It's called English program in Korea (EPIK).

And so pretty much it's a government-run program so they put you into the public schools

so it's like 9 to 5 but you're only teaching 22 hours a week.

And they give you housing, decent salary, the pension, health insurance, all the

I applied through them and then they just helped me with my paperwork

But then, I was interviewed by an Epik worker interviewer person

Which was really interesting.

I think I thought it went really bad, but I still got the job.

Like my webcam didn't work.

It went in and out.

And the lighting was terrible but somehow I still got the job.

Did the issue of race ever come up prior to coming into Korea?

I ask that because I when I came to Korea, I had a friend who was not Caucasian and we

had the same interview, but I made it he didn't.

Hmm I think well you came earlier I honestly I think.. I think..

I don't wanna phrase this like... I think it was better for me, but I think

이런 말 하기 싫은데.. 난 그게 더 좋았던 것 같은데

friends that were Asian, had a slightly more difficult time getting

동양인 친구들이 좀 더 힘들었던 것 같다. 일자리를 얻습니다

the job.

So like back back then when you probably became it was probably just like blond hair blue

그래서 그 당시에는 아마도 금발 머리에 파란

eyes that's what we want.

눈이 우리가 원하는 것이었을 것입니다.

Black guy, no.

흑인, 아니.

Asian, no.

아시아인, 아니.

But now they're just like... everybody come...

하지만 이제 그들은 마치... 모두가 와요...

Asian guys.

아시아인들이죠.

Asian girls.

아시아 소녀들.

And the reason is I have friends that are.. that are Asian.

그리고 그 이유는 제 친구가.. 동양인이기 때문입니다.

Like they might be Filipino or Chinese or Japanese...

마치 필리핀인이든 중국인이든 일본인이든…

Whatever they are.

And they look Korean... or whatever, the students and the parents think like,

그리고 한국사람같이 생겼어... 뭐니뭐니해도 학생이나 학부모가

even though they are a fluent English speaker, the students go up to them and go, in Korean,

영어를 유창하게 하는데도 학생들이 다가가서 한국말로

°You're Korean." And the person's like, "No I'm Chinese".

°넌 한국사람이구나'라고 생각한다." , "아니 난 중국인이야." "

or whatever.

"I don't speak Korean." So the kids have like... like a disconnect.

나는 한국어를 못해." 그래서 아이들은 마치... 단절된 것처럼

Just like, "My teachers Asian.

. "내 선생님은 동양인이야.

How do they know English?"

걔네 영어 어떻게 알아?"

They're not Korean?

한국인이 아니야?

I want a foreigner teacher.

나는 외국인 선생님을 원해.

My teacher's not a foreigner. And they are foreigner, but

우리 선생님은 외국인이 아니야. 그리고 그들은 외국인이지만,

after a while like the kids realize...

얼마 지나지 않아 아이들이 깨달은 것처럼...

All right so Epik hired you...

Correct. and then stuck you not in a city but they

stuck you in rural Korea.

Where is Seongju.

Gyungsanbukdo.

So when my recruiter¡¦ like everyone wanted Seoul.

경북도. 그래서 제 채용 담당자가

That's a thing and I.. this is like.. I don't care about Seoul.

… 가령.. 난 서울은 상관없어. 그리고

And then Busan is actually where I wanted to go.

내가 가고 싶었던 곳은

But Busan is actually harder to go to then Seoul.

사실

Why is that?

Busan requires the TEFL course that TEFL?

부산인데

Yeah it's actually... you need like in person.

. .직접 대면이 필요해

So mine was like an online class.

그래서 내 수업은 온라인 수업 같았어

For Busan public school you need a in person hours

부산 공립학교는 대면 시간이 필요해서

so it's actually harder to come than Seoul.

사실 서울보다 오기가 더 힘들어

Seoul is just first-come first-serve.

서울은 그냥 선착순이야

Busan is this you need to have higher standards.

부산은 이게 필요해 기준이 높아서

So with me they said Gyungsanbukdo, it's cool.

나랑은 경산북도 괜찮다던데

I didn't pick Daegu cuz Daegu and Gyungsanbukdo are technically separate.

대구랑 경산북도가 엄밀히 구분되니까 대구 안뽑음

And they're... the guy... the reading I read was

... 그 남자... 내가 읽은 독서는

Gyungsanbukdo many universities and it's a great area

경산북도 많은 대학이었고 그것은 좋은 지역이고

and I'm thinking I want to learn Korean.

나는 한국어를 배우고 싶다고 생각하고 있습니다.

I'm gonna go take classes at a Korean University.

한국 대학교에서 수업을 들으러 갈 거예요.

And then I got put in Seongju.

그러다가 성주에 투입됐다.

And Seongju is technically bigger than Seoul.

그리고 성주는 기술적으로 서울보다 큽니다.

Land-wise.

토지 현명한.

Land-wise, but

땅으로 따지면

It has a hundred thousand people.

십만 명의 사람들이 있습니다.

Hundred thousand people.

십만 명.

Seoul is 10 million people.

서울은 1000만명이다.

So when you first arrived there what was your initial reaction?

그래서 처음 그곳에 도착했을 때 첫 반응은 어땠나요?

In Korean?

한국어로?

In like Seongju.

성주처럼.

Like oh this is.. There's people here.

오, 이건.. 여기 사람들이 있어요.

There's people here... it was okay?

여기 사람들이 있네... 괜찮았어?

Like I mean like we did training in Daejeon.

대전에서 훈련을 했던 것처럼.

So we parted in Daejeon and in my we went to Gumi.

그래서 대전에서 헤어지고 나중엔 구미로 갔다.

My host...my main teacher picked me up.

내 호스트...주임 선생님이 나를 데리러 왔습니다.

We drove.

우리는 운전했다.

We talked.

He dropped me off at my place.

우리는 이야기.

그는 나를 내 집에 내려주었다.

I already had friends there from orientation.

오리엔테이션에서 이미 친구가있었습니다.

And all we did was just like walk around and hang out but then you...

그리고 우리가 한 모든 것은 그냥 돌아다니고 어울리는 것이었지만 당신은...

There really isn't nothing there.

There's no movie theater.

There's no like really big department store.

The Home Plus never opened like... The bus station was supposed to be like this

big department store, but it never opened.

so like there's 10 floors of nothing like nothing's in there and the first floor

10층에는 아무 것도 없는 것처럼 아무것도 없고 1층은

is just the bus station.

버스 정류장일 뿐입니다.

Okay.

So yeah the nearest movie theater is like 20 minutes away in the next city.

네, 가장 가까운 영화관은 다음 도시에서 20분 거리에 있습니다.

Okay well 20 minutes is not bad.

좋아요 20분도 나쁘지 않습니다.

Okay anyway why don't you tell us about the entering that classroom for the first time.

좋아요 어쨌든 처음으로 그 교실에 들어가는 것에 대해 말씀해주시지 않겠습니까?

Man, I was a bad teacher.

이봐, 나는 나쁜 선생이었다.

No like... like when I said I was a bad teacher like the first month was pretty rough like

아니... 내가 나쁜 선생님이라고 말했을 때 처럼 첫 달은

I think every everyone has a first month.

모든 사람에게 첫 달이 있다고 생각하는 것처럼 꽤 거칠었습니다.

I was just like I don't know what I'm doing.

나는 내가 무엇을 하고 있는지 모르는 것 같았다.

Like I wasn't prepared.

내가 준비되지 않은 것처럼.

I was just chilling... like.. but like going into the classroom...

그냥 얌전히 있었는데.. 마치.. 그런데 교실에 들어가는 것 같은...

Which age group?

연령대는?

I was teaching elementary school.

초등학교를 가르치고 있었습니다.

Elementary school.

초등학교.

Third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade.

3, 4, 5, 6학년.

So when they saw you they must have been like...

그래서 널 봤을 때 아마..

Teach... like... it's weird.. like Seongju...

가르쳐줘.. 어.. 이상해.. 성주처럼..

I don't know.. somehow... I don't know how this happened.

모르겠어.. 어쩐지.. 어떻게 된 일인지 모르겠어.

But somehow they put all the black people in the same district.. like.

그런데 어째서 그들은 모든 흑인들을 같은 지역에 두었습니다.. 그렇죠.

There's like 10 black people in orientation.

오리엔테이션에는 흑인 10명 정도가 있습니다.

They put us all in Gyungsanbukdo.

그들은 우리 모두를 경산북도에 집어넣었습니다.

By design?

디자인에 의해?

I don't know and then like 6 of us ended up in Seongju.

나도 모르게 6명 정도가 성주에 도착했다.

I was just like... How did y'all put just... all the black people

난 그냥... 시골에 있는 흑인들을 어떻게 다 집어넣었지

in the countryside?

?

But in Seongju there was..

그런데 성주에는..

At the English village there was another South African black guy that was working there.

영어마을에 남아공 흑인이 또 일하고 있었다.

so like all the students for English village... have to go in Seongju have to go...

영어마을 학생들이 다 그러하듯... 성주에 가야해 가야해...

All the students in Seongju must go to the English village.

성주에 있는 모든 학생들이 영어마을에 가야한다 .

What is an English village?

영어마을이란?

English town... English town is pretty much like um

잉글리시 타운... 잉글리시 타운은 음과 거의 비슷합니다.

My job is teaching book stuff, but the English town is kind of just like

제 직업은 책을 가르치는 것이지만 잉글리시 타운은 일종의

specifics.

세부 사항과 같습니다.

So the kids will spend a week there or... Each city has one.

그래서 아이들은 그곳에서 일주일을 보내거나... 각 도시에 하나씩 있습니다.

It's provided by the government?

Yeah um so on they'll spend like a day learning food stuff and

they'll do food things.

And the next day they might do hospitality.

It's more like activities and games to some extent

to make them learn it so like''' Okay.

There.

There's a black eye there, so like the kids all...

거기에 멍든 눈이 있어, 아이들처럼 모두...

and they all meet this black guy so they're just like...

그리고 그들은 모두 이 흑인 남자를 만나 마치 마치...

I met a black guy before.

전에 흑인 남자를 만났어.

Like... last year and he was very nice.

So seeing a new black guy it's not that... Okay so they didn't have too much of a shock.

The third grade class is like °Oh my god!

3학년 수업은 °맙소사!

Who's this black guy? but like the fourth, fifth, sixth grade classes

are like, "I met a black guy before."

처럼 "전에 흑인 남자를 만났어."

Okay so..

알았어..

"You didn't kill me."

"넌 날 죽이지 않았어."

So... the...

그래서... 그...

In the classroom itself, how did you... Did you interact well with the kids?

교실 자체에서 어떻게... 아이들과 잘 어울렸나요?

Yeah I mean my personality is outgoing and I had fun.

네 성격이 외향적이고 즐거웠어요.

Like my kids... like my kids were cool.

내 아이들처럼 ... 내 아이들이 멋졌던 것처럼.

Like yay play high-fives and... We did games and stuff.

하이파이브를 하고... 우리는 게임 같은 걸 했어요.

Were.. were they eager to learn English?

그들이 영어를 배우기를 열망했습니까?

Yes and no.

예, 아니오.

I mean they're forced to learn it.

억지로 배워야 한다는 뜻입니다.

So it's kind of like.. the same thing with like us in the states with Spanish.

그래서 그것은 마치 .. 스페인어를 사용하는 주에 있는 우리와 같은 것입니다.

I was forced to learn Spanish.

나는 스페인어를 배워야 했다.

I didn't want to learn Spanish.

나는 스페인어를 배우고 싶지 않았다.

But then, for me, like I only learned to pass school.

하지만 저에게는 마치 학교에 합격하는 법만 배운 것처럼요 .

And then it's part of my heritage so I was just like I need to learn Spanish.

But for them, it's just they have to learn Spanish to get...

They have to learn English to get into high school.

But, um, as a public school teacher the difference between public school and I say hagwon

which is s private academy, Public school teacher, is like, for elementary

school, we don't really care about teaching English.

And when I say that it means we introduce English to make it fun for them.

Like we're gonna play games.

Like it's fun because 999%, 90% of them are going to go to private academy.

And at private academy, it's terrible it's just work work work work work

Yeah they spend a lot of time there.

They spend a lot of time there so it's just like...

Like they're forced to do that.

And I also did teach at the English town a little bit.

I enjoy teaching.

There are things with teaching that do frustrate me but,

it's nothing that I hate teaching.

It's not that like if someone offered me a job to teach,

The thing I dislike about teaching is that I like the public school system in

I do not like the hagwan system.

Well there's private schools, but I mean like private academies.

And when I say that, in public school, you are the boss.

The teacher is the boss.

The government pays for you to be there so like you

work with your co teacher.

If you're… if your child is… your students acting up,

there are ways to deal with it like the Korean education system is a little different

even if that student is a bad student they're not listening or whatever…

그 학생이 나쁜 학생이라도 말을 안 듣거나 뭐...

If their grades are bad, you get in trouble.

성적이 나쁘면 곤란해집니다.

Or even if that kids not doing their homework and you say “little Minju like do your homework”

또는 그 아이들이 숙제를 안 하고 당신이 “꼬마 민주가 숙제하는 걸 좋아해”라고 해도

Minju goes to mom and dad and goes “Mom and dad Brandon teacher so mean to me.”

민주는 엄마 아빠에게 가서 “엄마 아빠 브랜든 선생님 나한테 너무 못되게 굴어”라고 합니다.

“I don't like Brandon teacher.”

"나는 Brandon 선생님을 좋아하지 않습니다."

“I hate him.

“나는 그를 싫어.

I want to go to a different school.”

다른 학교에 가고 싶어요.”

Mom and dad call your boss, and then your boss calls you,

엄마와 아빠가 상사에게 전화를 걸고, 상사가 당신에게 전화를 하고,

and you get yelled at for not being nice to the kid

and you're just like… the kid was punching a kid or

당신은 아이에게 친절하지 않다고 소리를 지르고,

the kid was doing this and this and you're like

당신은 마치…

well deal with it.

잘 처리하고 싶습니다.

But you have no way to deal with it.

I think Koreans… because they spend so much time studying it,

한국인들은… 공부하는 데 너무 많은 시간을 보내기 때문에

their… their reading and their writing is very good.

… 그들의 읽기와 쓰기는 매우 좋습니다.

But they're very shy.

그러나 그들은 매우 부끄러워합니다.

I know you spent a lot of time in Japan, too, so…

일본에서도 많은 시간을 보낸 것으로 알고 있는데

compared to there?

You gotta be careful.

Comparing Korean English speakers to Japanese English speakers…

영어를 한국어로 하는 사람과 일본어로 영어를 하는 사람을 비교하면…

Koreans are probably better I think.

And no I mean… it's still like hit or miss like you still have that one outlier person

I’ll put it this way.

No matter what if you were lost in Korea or lost in whatever

Country, Japan, or whatever…

일본에서 길을 잃든…

If you were lost and you went up to either of them

and you said, “Please help me.”

They're going to try and help you.

그들은 당신을 도우려고 노력할 것입니다.

And they might be very broken in English and then be

left…

They're gonna try their best to help you.
