English Vocabulary: Monsoon Season

안녕하세요 여러분. 제 이름은 에스더입니다.

And in this video, I want to talk about a very  important vocabulary word for all Koreans to know,  

그리고 이번 영상에서는 모든 한국인이 알아야 할 매우 중요한 단어인 오케이에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다

okay. And that word is ‘monsoon season’. What is ‘monsoon season’? 

. 그리고 그 단어는 '몬순 시즌'입니다. '장마철'이란?

Well, every summer many foreigners come and  they're surprised by how much rain there is,  

글쎄요, 매년 여름 많은 외국인들이 오고 그들이 얼마나 많은 비에 놀라는지,

right in the summer in Korea for about one month, usually in July, 

바로 여름에 한국에서 한 달 정도, 보통 7월에,

there's a lot of rain, okay. And in English we call that the ‘monsoon season’. 

많은 비가 내립니다. 영어로는 'monsoon season'이라고 합니다.

So it's very important for  Koreans to have a good umbrella. 

따라서 한국인에게는 좋은 우산을 갖는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

Maybe some rain boots, right? But also it can cause some  

아마도 장화일 거예요, 그렇죠? 하지만 비와 홍수가 너무 많으면

problems for some businesses and homes if  there's too much rain and flooding, right? 

일부 사업체와 가정에 문제를 일으킬 수도 있습니다. 그렇죠?

So if you see a foreigner, and  they ask about summer in Korea, 

그래서 외국인을 만나서 그들이 한국의 여름에 대해 묻는다면, 장마철에 대해 이야기한다는 것을

it's very important that you remember that  you tell them about monsoon season, okay? 

기억하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

So let's look on the board and  look at this example sentence. 

그럼 칠판에서 이 예문을 살펴봅시다.

“The monsoon season in Korea  begins in summer.” Right? 

“한국의 장마는 여름에 시작됩니다.” 오른쪽?

I just talked about that again. “The monsoon…” Let's pronounce it together. 

방금 그 얘기를 다시 했어요. “The monsoon…” 함께 발음해 봅시다.

‘monsoon’ ‘monsoon’ 

'몬순' '몬순'

So “The monsoon season in Korea begins in summer.” And as we said, the monsoon season lasts for  

그래서 “한국의 장마는 여름부터 시작됩니다.” 그리고 우리가 말했듯이 몬순 시즌은

about one month, and there's lots  

약 한 달 동안 지속되며

of rain during the monsoon season. Okay, let's look at some more examples together. 

몬순 시즌에는 많은 비가 내립니다. 좋아요, 몇 가지 더 많은 예를 함께 살펴봅시다.

Let's look at these examples. “It's very humid during the monsoon season.” 

이러한 예를 살펴보겠습니다. “장마철이라 습도가 높아요.”

“It's very humid during the monsoon season.” “The monsoon season is coming.” 

“장마철이라 습도가 높아요.” “장마철이 다가오고 있습니다.”

“The monsoon season is coming.” “I need to buy a new umbrella for  

“장마철이 다가오고 있습니다.” “장마철에 새 우산을 사야 해요

the monsoon season.” “I need to buy a new  

.” “

umbrella for the monsoon season.” Okay so in this video we learned  

장마철에 대비해 새 우산을 사야 해요.” 자, 이번 영상에서는

about the vocabulary word ‘monsoon season’. Remember, it's a time in Korea when there's a  

'몬순 시즌'이라는 단어에 대해 배웠습니다. 기억하세요, 한국은

lot of rain and it's very hot and sticky, right? Now, in Southern California where I'm from,  

비가 많이 오고 엄청 덥고 끈적끈적한 때죠? 이제 제가 태어난 남부 캘리포니아에는

there is no monsoon season. We get a little bit of rain in the  

몬순 시즌이 없습니다. 우리는 한국과 매우 다른 겨울에 약간의 비가 내립니다

winter time which is very different from Korea. But again, nothing like the rain we see here. 

. 그러나 다시, 우리가 여기서 보는 비와 같은 것은 없습니다.

Okay so that is something that  I'm still trying to get used to.

Okay, so again, the word we  learned is ‘monsoon season’.
