British Pants vs American Pants | English Communication Problem

And in this video I want to talk to you about communication problems that occur

when we use different kinds of English because as you know we don't have the

영어가 없기 때문에 다른 종류의 영어를 사용할 때 발생하는 의사소통 문제에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다

same English in the UK and in the US, for example.

So some Americans don't

그래서 어떤 미국인들은

understand me when I speak English because I don't have the same

내가 영어로 말할 때 내

pronunciation and because I don't always use the same words.

발음이 같지 않고 항상 같은 단어를 사용하지 않기 때문에 내 말을 이해하지 못합니다.

Most of the time we do understand each other

대부분의 경우 우리는 서로를 이해

but sometimes we don't and it can be quite confusing at times.

하지만 때로는 이해하지 못하고 때때로 상당히 혼란스러울 수 있습니다.

For example, umm, to me there's a ground floor in a building.

예를 들어, 저에게는 건물의 1층이 있습니다.

To an American person my ground floor is their first floor.

미국인에게 내 1층은 그들의 1층입니다.

So if I talk about the first floor, I don't mean the same floor as an American person.

그래서 1층이라고 하면 미국인과 같은 층을 말하는 것이 아닙니다.

So see it can get a bit confusing.

따라서 약간 혼란스러울 수 있습니다.

And talking about confusion, I have a story which is quite funny.

그리고 혼란에 대해 이야기하면서 꽤 재미있는 이야기가 있습니다.

I was in college at the time and I was on the phone with an American friend

나는 당시 대학에 있었고 미국인 친구와 통화 중이었고

and we talked you know for 20-25 minutes and then we decide to go grab a drink together.

우리는 20-25 분 동안 이야기를 나눈 다음 함께 술을 마시기로 결정했습니다.

So I'm like, "yeah we should we you know we should go out and have a drink."

그래서 저는 "그래, 우리가 나가서 술을 마셔야 한다는 걸 알아야 해."

And she's like, "Okay yeah sure. What a good idea."

그리고 그녀는 "알았어, 알았어. 좋은 생각이야."

And then she says, "Let me just put on some pants."

그리고 그녀는 "그냥 바지를 입게 해주세요. "라고 말합니다.

now you have to know pants in the USA,

이제 미국에서 바지를 알아야 합니다

means like trousers.

.

Okay your pants. Okay like these.

좋아, 바지. 좋아요.

In British English, pants are underpants.

영국식 영어에서 바지는 속바지입니다.

Okay?

좋아요?

So for me, when she says, "Let me put on some pants."

그래서 그녀가 "바지 좀 입을게"라고 말하면.

I get this image of my friend talking to me for 20 minutes naked.

20분 동안 알몸으로 이야기하는 친구의 이미지를 받습니다.

You know with no underpants on.

속바지 안입고 알잖아.

So I was quite shocked and I said, "What?"

그래서 저는 꽤 충격을 받았고 "뭐라고요?"

She said, "Yeah, yeah. Just grab some pants.

그녀는 "그래, 그래. 그냥 바지 좀 집어와.

I said, "What do you mean pants?"

내가 "바지가 무슨 뜻이야?"라고 물었고

She said, "Oh no no no, I mean trousers."

그녀는 "오 안돼 안돼 안돼, 내 말은 바지야."라고 말했습니다.

And then we just laughed so hard because you know

for a minute there, there was a just a lot of confusion.

잠시만요, 많은 혼란이 있었습니다.

Um, so yeah, depending on where you come from,

음, 그래, 어디서 왔는지에 따라, 과소

I think you shouldn't underestimate ...um.. you know the differences.

평가해서는 안 된다고 생각합니다...음.. 차이점을 알고 있습니다.

And you have to be careful sometimes with the words that you choose.

그리고 가끔은 조심해야 합니다. 당신이 선택한 단어들..

You know? So...

알죠? 그래서.. 네 그런 일이 있을

Yeah that's something that can happen.

수 있어요

So you see even native speakers sometimes ..um.. don't really understand each other.

그래서 원어민들도 가끔..음.. 서로 이해를 잘 못하는 걸 보거든요.

That happens as well.

So yeah that's what I wanted to tell you.
