Today we have a special episode where me, and this cat, are going to teach you guys
1
4459
6501
00:10
the difference between recommend and suggest. Meow, Aww yeah!
2
10960
5820
00:27
So many people confuse these two words, recommend and suggest and in many cases they can be
3
27210
6860
00:34
synonyms. For example, if you tell me that you are feeling sick, I can say,
4
34070
6480
00:40
I recommend you see a doctor, or I suggest you see a doctor
5
40550
5460
00:46
In this case they are exactly the same. A different structure, I can say:
6
46010
6090
00:52
I suggest seeing a doctor, using the ING form of the verb. I suggest seeing a doctor, or
7
52100
8180
01:00
I recommend seeing a doctor So if you follow either of these verbs by
8
60329
4771
01:05
another verb, the second verb will be in the ING form. I recommend going, I suggest having
9
65100
6370
01:11
lunch at that restaurant. A great way to distinguish the difference
10
71470
4780
01:16
between these two verbs is to look at it in the noun form. For example a suggestion and
11
76250
5450
01:21
a recommendation. A suggestion, I can give you a suggestion
12
81700
3750
01:25
that’s just a good idea, something that I think would be cool. But when I say recommendation
13
85450
6400
01:31
that means that I am putting my trust in you. For example, I can recommend you for a job,
14
91850
7000
01:39
I can recommend you. That means that I am telling my friend, who could be your future
15
99210
5009
01:44
boss, that you are a trustworthy person. I recommend you.
16
104219
4900
01:49
Or another situation, I can recommend my dentist because she is really good. I can recommend
17
109119
6860
01:55
her to you because I know she is a really good professional.
18
115979
5011
02:00
And a different way to use suggest would be when I want to say that this implies something.
19
120990
6409
02:07
An example could be, if you hear someone speaking English with a strong accent you might say:
20
127399
5581
02:12
Oh, his accent suggests that he is Australian. Or, his accent suggests that he is American,
21
132980
6880
02:19
which means it implies that. So, that’s it for today’s episode of RealLife
22
139860
