10 Phrasal Verbs for Dating in English

to your partner, your Tinder match or even  when you are gossiping with your friends.  

Yep, you heard right: 10 Sexy Phrasal  Verbs. There will be no sugar coating.

Now just to be clear, a phrasal verb  is an idiomatic phrase consisting  

of a verb and another one or two elements,  typically either an adverb or a preposition. 

For today's lesson I'm going  to share a story with you.  

Let's say my friend Angela, who had been single  for a while by the time she met this guy Harry.

Now the first phrasal verb is "to check  someone out." So, Angela and Harry's story  

started in a club. She was there having  a drink with a couple of girlfriends,  

when one of them said a guy was checking her out. 

You know when you are in a place and there's  that one person looking at you from a distance  

with interest or when you see someone you  find attractive and you keep looking at them  

and trying to identify if you should talk  to them or not. That's it, to check someone  

out is to intensely look at a person because  you feel an instant attraction to them.

The second phrasal verb is "to hit on someone." Well, after some time of constant eye contact  

they both hit the dance floor for a little  boogie. They had been dancing from a distance  

but then Harry came closer and closer to Angela. That's when he finally built up the courage  

to hit on her. He started flirting by  saying he couldn't stop looking at her  

and that she had a smile that would brighten  up the darkest room. Romantic, right?

To hit on someone is to show that person  in a direct way that you are romantically  

or sexually interested in them. More  often than not, the person will use  

some sort of pickup line like, "There's  something wrong with my cell phone:  

it doesn't have your number in it" or "I'm no  photographer but I can picture us together." 

Normally a pickup line is used to break  the ice and to show the other person your

Number three is "to hit it off." Despite  knowing how things often work out that is  

for the worse Angela felt something  of a good vibe coming from Harry. 

The more they talked the more they realized that  they enjoyed the same things: traveling, movies,  

coffee. As the night came to a  close Harry gave Angela his number  

so they could see each other again. They truly hit it off!  

If you hit it off with someone it means  you both form an immediate positive  

connection. This could also be used in any context  not only when referring to romantic relationships. 

You might have that friend or a  co-worker that when you met them  

you instantly had a great connection, so you can  also say in that context that you hit it off.

Alright let's get back to  Angela and Harry's story.  

The fourth sexy phrasal verb  is "to go out with someone." 

They'd been texting for a while now. When they  finally decided to go out on their first date  

they went to a drive-in cinema and they  had dinner at an amazing bistro in town. 

Angela says it was pretty standard  but I thought it was kinda romantic.  

Going out with someone is one of the  first steps into beginning a relationship. 

It can be going just on one date to get to  know each other or on a series of dates. 

Going out usually means you have a  physical relationship with someone  

but it can also mean non-physical.

The next one is "come on to." Well now things start to get spicy for  

Angela and Harry after a couple of very successful  dates at the drive-in and at the ice skating rink. 

Both Harry and Angela noticed that they were  coming on to each other, that is they were  

both trying to take their relationship to the next  level, to be romantically or physically involved. 

To come on to someone then is to clearly show  the person you're sexually attracted to them  

and interested in being  romantically involved with them.

The next one is "to make out." When you go out with someone and you  

come on to each other it's just natural  that you make out at some point, right? 

That's what happened to Angela and Harry once  they both realized they had the same feelings.  

By the end of their third date  they were already "making out." 

Make out means to passionately  kiss somebody for a long period of  

time. We often see our favorite actors and  actresses making out in movies and TV series.

"To turn someone on" 

Now take a look at the text Angela sent  me after one of her dates with Harry.

The answer is B. If something turns  you on it means that it makes you  

sexually interested or excited. You can also change it into a noun:  

"a turn on" and say for example,  "Confidence is a big turn on for me."

Now the next one is "to hook up." Now remember the first text I got from Angela,  

what she meant by "it happened"  was that she and Harry hooked up. 

That is they had sex. Now if you've  been following their story so far  

you know that they are not yet in a  serious or exclusive relationship,  

so when you say two people hooked up it  means they started having casual sex. 

You can also use hookup as a synonym for make out  but in this context it would mean just to kiss,  

so be careful: it can mean to  kiss or to have casual sex.

The next one is "to get it on."  

As is the natural course of a romantic  relationship the parts involved get it on  

this means they have sex. For example after  a couple of dates they finally got it on. 

When people are in love however they  may refer to it in a more romantic way  

and say "to make love" instead. The opposite of it  when someone just goes from one hook up to another  

without committing to anyone you may  say this person is "fooling around."

Lastly, "spice things up." If you've been together with  

someone for quite some time you may fall into  a routine, so you may want to try new things to  

make your relationship exciting or interesting  or sexy again. This is "to spice things up,"  

it's the opposite of making something boring. The nice thing about this phrasal verb is that you  

can use it in many different contexts and not only  in relationships. For example, "They exaggerated  

the details to spice up the story" or "to spice  up my life I decided to travel to Europe."

Phrasal verbs are oftentimes complicated for a lot  of learners, so much so that many of my learners  

don't use them when they know they should. When you learn English at school you often  

learn or are taught their synonyms. For example  "to give up" means "to quit." So I often hear my  

students using the regular verb quit instead  of the more natural phrasal verb "give up." 

Whilst this isn't necessarily a bad thing you  should use them using phrasal verbs are extremely  

common in daily conversations and believe it  or not they are not informal and they express  

exactly what you need or want to say. And  you also sound much more like natives. 

So you should use them if you want to  take your English to the next level.
