Dating in English: Idioms, Slang, Phrasal Verbs for Dating

Hey, AMAZING people! Today we're going to talk about dating.

And that includes all the things we say when we see someone we're attracted to...

when we wanna seduce that person...

all the vocab that centers around dating.

So, let's get the ball rolling

Here at RealLife English we're all about, guess what, real life English.

That's the English that natives and most fluent non-natives actually use...

and not that same old textbook-type English that schools teach.

So, in this lesson you are gonna learn vocabulary that's very relevant today...

in any authentic, real English situation, like for example the English you see in TV.

in like movies, TV shows, music...

or the English you need to use if you live or visit any English speaking country...

or if you have native English speaking friends.

With that said, let's get started.

Our first word today is HOT, you probably know this word. It's pretty common.

We use the word hot to refer to a good-looking girl or even sometimes if you're a girl to an attractive man.

However, when we wanna say that a girl is really hot, we wanna emphasize that

What do we say here?

We say a girl is smoking hot.

Smoking hot girls receive a lot of flirtatious remarks, pick up lines, catcalls, you name it.

And if you're a girl you probably know what I'm talking about here.

So we have the word flirtatious. It's an adjective that comes from the verb to flirt...

to flirt with someone, which by the way means to act in a provocative way or to say things that...

it makes it look like you're sexually attracted to the other person to the person you're flirting with

So, we have flirtatious remarks on the one hand, and pick-up lines on the other.

They mean pretty much the same thing...

...there are some nuances I'd say. For example, flirtatious remarks tend to be more playful and innocent..

while pick up lines can be more committed, sexually-oriented and...

...Well, there are some pick up lines that are actually jokes. And they generally...

One thing is for sure, they generally have wordplay, like for example if I said...

'Did we have class together?

I could've sworn we had chemistry.

I know it's pretty cheesy, but anyway... Moving on, I also mentioned catcalls.

A catcall is a cat on the phone, it's pretty simple. I'm just kidding.

A catcall is that -I don't know why I'm doing this.

A catcall is that whistle men do when they see a good-looking girl on the street.

That whistle. That *catcall* That's a catcall, a pretty badly done catcall

but that's a catcall.

Now, a lot of girls hate catcalls and rightly so because they can be so annoying, so rude...

so you shouldn't, you shouldn't do it.

But why? Well, for one thing it's rude as I said and you shouldn't try to do it...

...you shouldn't catcall a girl for that reason alone.

But also you're never gonna get a date by catcalling a girl, that goes without saying. It's so obvious.

But then, the question here is how do you get a date then?

That's a good question and for starters you need to ask the girl out.

To ask someone out means to ask that girl if she'd be interested in going out with you on a date.

Now, let's focus on that word date and the kind of word that it is.

Date in this case is a noun, and a such it has two senses.

The first sense is, you know, when a guy and a girl get together, have dinner, maybe go to the movies...

...and the guy pays for everything. That's a date, the first sense of the word date as a noun.

The second sense, a date the person you have a date with on a date. That's your date, the person.

Now, here's the thing it can also be a verb. If you're dating someone...

...it means you're going out with that person, you're seeing that person.

You're going through the different stages in the dating process.

And that's funny because I have this expression, this idiom here.

We have first base...

...second base...

...and third base.

It's pretty funny what they mean, specially the third base.

And there you have it. You know what? It's a baseball metaphor.

So, we just looked at how you get a date, and now let's look at it the opposite way.

Why would you not get a date?

Well, if the girl you have a crush on is like too hot, too sexy...

...maybe she has a social status that makes you feel inferior...

...or maybe she's too popular, or maybe you're the loser and she's normal.

If that's the case we say that that girl is out of your league.

The way you feel is this, you feel like your confidence level is down...

...and you feel that if you do ask her out she'll reject you, she'll turn you down...

...without not first looking down on you.

So you'll ask her out and she'll be like 'no thanks, I have better things to do'

But before getting a date, there's a whole series of steps you have to go through.

First, you flirt with a girl, or in a more slangy, informal and stronger way...

...you could say you're hitting on that woman, you're hitting on that girl.

To hit on someone means the same as to flirt, but as I said it's stronger and it's definitely slang.

Now if you know how to hit on women, you got game.

That's the term people use to say that someone is good with girls.

You know how to talk with girls, and so you got game. You have a good name.

Now, what's the opposite of having a good game? Well, definitely being too pushy.

Maybe you're scaring them away, from one reason or another you're scaring them away.

You're going after girls, but they're rather running away from you.

It's that you're ugly, they don't like your attitude, they look at you like you just want to have sex with them.

If that's the case, do you know what women will call you?

A creep.

Let's go through some phrasal verbs, now.

You can see them here at your left.

Chat someone up. That means... it's a kind of a combination between talking and flirting.

So you're having a chat, that part is self-explanatory, a chat with someone...

...but you're also hitting on them, hitting on that girl.

Now, moving down the line. Make out with someone. Pretty simple just to kiss someone.

To hook up with someone.

To have sex with someone.

Now, both these make out and hook up and to some extent chat up, chat someone up as well...

...are used interchangeably by both sexes.

That means if you're a girl, you can say I made out with a guy last night, I hooked up with a guy last night...

...and it's not like it doesn't make sense.

It wouldn't though to say to pick a guy up or it would I think but it's not something that girls usually do.

It's something that guys do most of the times.

So, if you're a guy, you wanna pick up a girl...

that means you like that girl, you're sexually attracted to that girl.

Maybe you wanna make out with that girl or hook up with that girl.

So if you do one of these, if you do either one of those things, you pick her up.

Now, I know this word does kind of objectify women, like you're picking up girls like they're some kind of object?

I totally get that part, but hey I'm just teaching you English here.
