A student from our very own Fluency Circle  English Community recently asked me:
0
160
5360
00:06
Andrea, can you recommend an exercise  that I can do for only 5 minutes a day
1
6160
5600
00:11
that would have a big impact on my English?
2
11760
2400
00:14
So, I said, “uhm, that’s  an interesting question...”
3
14880
4320
00:21
You know, I was able to give him some  ideas just off the top of my head,
4
21600
4320
00:25
but I also said that if he gave  me some time to think about it
5
25920
3840
00:29
I could probably come up with more ideas.  I also thought I could ask my team for some
6
29760
5760
00:35
extra ideas because I’m sure they’d all have  some creative 5-minute exercise ideas to share.
7
35520
5120
00:41
After all, they’re all language learners... Later in this video I’ll let them speak to you,
8
41280
5840
00:47
so stick around because I  think their tips are amazing!
9
47120
2880
00:50
Before we get into the lesson, myself,  Ethan and the whole RealLife English team
10
50720
4480
00:55
would be honoured to accompany you  on your journey to English fluency.
11
55200
3840
00:59
Let’s go on this adventure together. So, please,  do 2 things: give this video a like and two, if
12
59680
7120
01:06
you’re new around here, subscribe to this channel,  this way you’ll make sure you see our next lesson
13
66800
5360
01:12
(if you also hit the bell, you’ll  make extra sure you don’t miss it).
14
72800
4000
01:21
Okay, so one important thing to keep in  mind with these powerful 5-minute exercises
15
81840
5360
01:27
is that they are by no means a replacement  for any of the other more time-consuming
16
87200
4480
01:31
practice or learning that  you might already be doing.
17
91680
2720
01:35
If that, whatever it is, has been giving you  results, that’s great, keep at it, don’t stop.
18
95280
5840
01:42
What you can do with these powerful 5-minute  exercises is add them on top of whatever
19
102000
5040
01:47
you’re doing. It’s going to complement  your existing practice/study routine.
20
107040
5120
01:52
Let’s get to them.
21
112880
960
01:55
The first idea for a 5-minute exercise  is one that involves an app: Memrise.
22
115200
5120
02:01
This is an app that specializes in the  science of memory and forgetting. So,
23
121040
4640
02:05
when you learn a new word or expression,  put it into your Memrise, then let the app,
24
125680
5440
02:11
precisely its space repetition technology, do  the work. What this means is that the app will
25
131120
6240
02:17
ask you to review a previously learned  item based on the “forgetting curve”.
26
137360
4480
02:22
Let me explain how that works. Let’s say you  just learned a new phrase, “all of a sudden”
27
142480
6000
02:28
for example, and you put it into your  Memrise. Based on the forgetting curve,
28
148480
5200
02:33
the app knows you’re likely to forget that new  phrase 1 day after learning it. So it’ll send
29
153680
5920
02:39
you a reminder of that phrase the next  day, so that you don’t forget it. Then,
30
159600
5040
02:44
you’ll get another reminder on the 3rd day, on the  6th day, and on the 10th day. Then that interval
31
164640
6640
02:51
increases. The app will ask you to review the  word or phrase after a month, then after 3 months.
32
171280
6400
02:58
This whole process might take  more than five minutes to set up,
33
178240
3680
03:01
but after that it’ll take just a few moments to  review the vocabulary that you learned previously.
34
181920
5520
03:08
So, in addition to just reviewing, keep in mind  these 2 extra things that have worked for me
35
188240
4880
03:13
when learning Spanish and that you could  include in your Memrise learning routine.
36
193120
3920
03:17
1- Say the words out loud. I’ve always felt  that this helped me reinforce my memory of
37
197040
5760
03:22
the new word or phrase. Plus, this helps you  create practice for the pronunciation of it.
38
202800
6560
03:29
2- Prioritize learning word chunks,  rather than individual words.
39
209360
4400
03:34
Your newly learned phrase “all of a sudden” is  a chunk that is more deeply learned as a unit of
40
214320
6640
03:40
meaning rather than as the sum of its parts. This  is important for the pronunciation of it as well.
41
220960
6160
03:47
You’ll learn this not as all-of-a-sudden,  with emphasis on each word,
42
227680
5520
03:53
but rather as one single all of a sudden.
43
233200
2640
03:56
Now with our Fluent with Friends Course you  get access to Memrise to help you learn and
44
236640
4880
04:01
remember the vocabulary in each lesson so  that you can confidently use it when speaking
45
241520
5600
04:07
and understanding it when listening. Not only  this but you'll receive PDF Power Lessons
46
247120
5760
04:12
for each of the 48 lessons and access to our  Fluency Circle Global Community so that you're
47
252880
6320
04:19
never alone in your language journey. But the best part is it's FREE so you
48
259200
6080
04:25
can try it right now by clicking  up here or the link down below.
49
265280
3760
04:30
Moving on, another highly impactful  5-minute daily exercise you can do,
50
270400
5200
04:35
and maybe you’ve heard me talk about  in the past, is shadowing or mimicking.
51
275600
4080
04:40
Through the power of repeating  what a model speaker says,
52
280240
3360
04:43
you most noticeably improve your pronunciation  and things like intonation and connected speech,
53
283600
6240
04:49
but I also think you can reinforce grammar  patterns and consolidate vocabulary.
54
289840
4640
04:55
Here is how it works…
55
295040
800
04:57
Choose a model speaker you like. One whom maybe  you like how they speak, or their accent. There
56
297120
6560
05:03
could be many different speakers, too. Like, if  you choose to shadow or mimic a Friends episode.
57
303680
6400
05:10
Now, you will shadow what they say. This means,  while they’re speaking, you’ll repeat what
58
310080
5760
05:15
they’re saying. Try copying everything. From  pronunciation, to inflections in their voice,
59
315840
7040
05:22
tone, intonation. It’d be great if  you can also imitate their emotions.
60
322880
5920
05:29
That’s shadowing in a nutshell. Mimicking is  different in that you listen to someone speak,
61
329600
5280
05:34
then pause the video, and  then repeat what they said.
62
334880
3440
05:38
Again, imitate their pronunciation, inflections,  intonation, and if you’d like emotions as well.
63
338320
6000
05:45
Personally, I’ve felt this process is interesting  and fun to do, but only if I don’t do it for
64
345360
6160
05:51
too long, otherwise it starts to feel boring.  But, if it’s just for five minutes every day,
65
351520
5920
05:57
you can still get the best out of  it and have a lot of fun with it.
66
357440
3360
06:01
The reason why this method is so loved by  many and recommended so much by teachers
67
361440
5040
06:06
and language learners alike is because  it definitely produces results.
68
366480
4320
06:11
I think this is because you can focus 100%  on the production aspect of the language.
69
371440
5600
06:17
Say you mimic this sentence: All  of a sudden we heard a loud noise.
70
377760
4640
06:23
When you do it, you can focus on pronouncing  each sound correctly, the linked features of it,
71
383040
5600
06:28
the stress and so on. That’s where  all your mental power is focused.
72
388640
5200
06:34
But, in a non-mimicking scenario where  you have to say this sentence yourself,
73
394640
5120
06:39
it’s like 50% of your brain power  is focused on remembering the words,
74
399760
4400
06:44
structuring the sentence correctly,  interacting with the person you’re talking to,
75
404160
4640
06:48
etc. Then, only the remaining 50% is focused on  how you say it, your pronunciation, intonation,
76
408800
7440
06:56
etc. Because of this, it’s not possible to  completely focus on polishing your pronunciation.
77
416240
6240
07:04
So, the next 5-minute exercise is going  to help your listening comprehension.
78
424240
4320
07:09
It is transcribing. Now, I have never actually  done this myself, but I’ve heard from a few
79
429200
5920
07:15
people in the RealLife English team that this  was HUGE for them when they did it. In fact,
80
435120
6080
07:21
I’ll let Max explain how transcribing had an  incredible effect on his listening comprehension.
81
441200
5440
07:27
That's right! For a while transcription was  actually part of my job. We've now switched
82
447600
5520
07:33
to software transcription but before I had to  actually manually transcribe the RealLife English
83
453120
6480
07:39
Podcast episodes, and what I would do basically is  just play a bit of audio, pause and transcribe it.
84
459600
8240
07:47
For the most part this was fairly easy. However  there were some parts that were particularly
85
467840
4960
07:52
challenging and this was when Ethan or  Justin spoke too fast and basically just
86
472800
4640
07:57
couldn't recognize what they were saying. So what I had to do was to slow down the
87
477440
5840
08:03
audio a little bit, or even sometimes just  listen to it a few times until I got it
88
483280
4160
08:08
and just the practice of doing this I felt had  a big impact on my listening comprehension.
89
488240
7120
08:15
And the way I realized this is one  time I asked a friend who was a more
90
495920
4640
08:20
advanced English learner than I was at the time. I knew he had a better listening comprehension,
91
500560
4960
08:25
a better ear than I had at the time, and  so I asked him to actually help me with the
92
505520
4800
08:30
process of transcribing the podcast. The parts that he found challenging,
93
510320
4400
08:34
I realized I was not having trouble actually  transcribing those parts so I realized that
94
514720
5840
08:40
my ear had developed further than the level he  was at at the time. So that's how I realized how
95
520560
7680
08:48
powerful the practice of transcribing can be and  so this is the reason why I think this is an ideal
96
528240
6960
08:55
quick 5-minute daily exercise that anyone can  do and can safely expect big big results from.
97
535760
8880
09:06
And Max isn’t the only one that swears  by transcribing, a lot of people do. An
98
546240
5680
09:11
alternative to this, that’s actually quite a bit  easier to do, and that still conserves some of the
99
551920
5440
09:17
benefits, is doing a watch-read-watch  again exercise. Here’s how it works.
100
557360
5520
09:23
Step 1: Take any stretch of audio or  video that you can get a transcript for.
101
563440
5920
09:29
It could be a 30 second clip from  an episode of your favorite TV show.
102
569360
4160
09:34
Watch it, listen to it, say 30  seconds of it, without subtitles
103
574400
4400
09:38
or without looking at the transcript.  Don’t do anything but just watch or listen.
104
578800
5440
09:44
Step 2: Take that same 30-second clip and  watch it while following the transcription.
105
584880
5360
09:50
You’ll notice, if the 30 second clip is the right  level of difficulty, that with the help of the
106
590880
5440
09:56
transcript it is much clearer. You can now hear  the words that you previously perhaps missed.
107
596320
6160
10:03
Step 3: Watch the same clip, but this  time without the help of the transcript.
108
603280
5200
10:08
You’ll notice that the difference in  your comprehension is jaw-dropping.
109
608480
3840
10:13
This is what we call the  watch-read-watch again method
110
613520
4800
10:18
If you’re part of the Fluency  Circle you may know Ksenia.
111
618320
4000
10:22
This is what they suggested  for 5-minute exercises:
112
622320
3920
10:27
Okay what you can do if you only have five  minutes a day to work on your English vocabulary,
113
627200
4640
10:32
this is what I did. Going to bed I tried to  reflect on my day: What I did, what I learned
114
632880
7360
10:40
or people I met. Maybe even talk about my  feelings. I had that day, I also used to plan
115
640240
6960
10:47
the next day and this is, I can tell you,  an effective way to boost your vocabulary.
116
647200
5760
10:53
In addition to what he said  about transcribing audio,
117
653920
3200
10:57
Max suggested a tip for working on your fluency:
118
657120
2720
11:00
Another idea for a five minute daily exercise I  think is more for advanced English learners but
119
660640
7920
11:08
if you're an intermediary beginner I think  you can give it a go and see how it goes,
120
668560
5360
11:13
and this exercise is very challenging  but it's very fun at the same time.
121
673920
5520
11:19
And what you have to do is tune into a talk  show on the radio in your native language
122
679440
5200
11:24
and live translate what they're saying. You could either like do it simultaneously
123
684640
6240
11:30
or maybe just let them speak and then translate  what they're saying. Again it's very challenging
124
690880
6320
11:37
but is all kinds of fun and  you get some good practice and
125
697200
6480
11:44
it pushes you to think on your feet and  I think it activates that fluency, right?
126
704400
5520
11:51
Now, Izzy had this idea,
127
711200
2080
11:53
which I know can be a game-changer to  improve your writing skills in English.
128
713280
4560
11:58
Do you feel like you always struggle  to create and establish new habits?
129
718640
4160
12:04
Well maybe what you actually need is  just a little bit more of awareness,
130
724000
3600
12:08
being aware of what's really going on with  yourself. So here's what I recommend you do.
131
728240
5840
12:14
Every day, at the end of the day we're  going to ask yourself these three questions:
132
734080
4240
12:19
1) What went well? What are  the things that worked for you.
133
739680
4160
12:24
2) What didn't go well? And 3) How to improve?
134
744800
4400
12:30
So by asking yourself these three  questions you're just going to be aware
135
750160
3760
12:33
of what's working and what can you do more of. To what's not working just recognize those things
136
753920
7040
12:41
being honest with yourself and then three have  a real plan. Establish, create a real plan on
137
761520
4800
12:46
how to improve, how to overcome those issues  and by doing this you're going to be holding
138
766320
4240
12:50
yourself accountable every day and just be making  more progress more consistently in your learning.
139
770560
6640
12:58
Next up is Diego. Take a look at his  tips for improving your pronunciation
140
778640
4720
13:03
and speaking by only doing this 5 minutes a day.
141
783360
3440
13:07
Hey there, this is Diego here. Something  that I do that really helps me with my
142
787520
5520
13:13
speaking and that I can do for just  about five minutes a day is singing!
143
793040
4560
13:18
I love music, I'm a big fan of Rock and Hip Hop.
144
798560
3600
13:23
However I find it easier to sing Rock because  I have been listening to it since I was a kid.
145
803520
6160
13:31
As for Hip Hop, I started  listening to it later in my life.
146
811440
5360
13:37
So I go for Hip Hop with my practices, I choose  a song and sing just a verse or two of it until
147
817760
8160
13:45
I have mastered the intonation and cadence for  those verses. If I keep doing it consistently I'm
148
825920
8480
13:54
able to sing the whole song in no time and it's  noticeable how my speaking improves over time.
149
834400
8720
14:03
Finally, here’s Lucas’s idea  for a 5-minute daily exercise.
150
843920
4080
14:09
Hello everybody! So one exercise that  I've developed daily to develop my fluency
151
849040
7120
14:16
and my pronunciation skills was
152
856160
2640
14:19
picking an episode of a podcast and choosing  a specific part of it. Maybe you like how the
153
859920
6960
14:26
speaker is talking at that specific time and  you repeat it over and over again. You don't
154
866880
6560
14:33
have to be very accurate but you have to try to  copy the intonation and pronunciation as it is.
155
873440
7120
14:41
Let me know down in the comments, which  of these 5-minute exercises the RealLife
156
881360
4720
14:46
English team and I shared you think  would be best for improving your English.
157
886080
4880
14:51
Have you ever done other impactful 5-minute daily  exercises that we didn’t mention in this lesson?
158
891760
6080
14:58
I’d love to read about your experience!
159
898400
