Today is the last video in the summer of slang video series.

속어 시리즈의 마지막 영상이에요.

Today, we’re learning ‘facts’ and ‘fam’

오늘은 'FACTS' 와 'fam' 에 대해 알아볼 것입니다.

and in addition to these 2 slang terms,

이 두 가지 속어들과 함께,

we’re also learning something interesting about consonant clusters with T.

T가 포함된 자음군에 대한 흥미로운 사실도 알아볼 거예요.

Let’s start with fam, family.

fam과 family 부터 시작할게요.

Both terms can be used to mean your people, your friends, your community, the group that’s

두 단어는 모두 당신 주변의 사람들, 친구들, 그리고 당신이 속한 공동체, 그룹을 나타낸답니다.

important to you.

당신에게 중요한 사람들이죠.

Rachel’s English community, you are my family.

Rachel's English 와 함께 하는 당신도 제 family 랍니다.

If you were texting a group of friends to get together, you might say: Hey fam!

문자로 친구들을 모을 때, 당신은 '얘들아! (Hey fam!)' 하고 부를거예요.

What are you doing tonight?

너네 오늘 저녁에 뭐해?

You really like the girls on your basketball team, don’t you?

너 농구 팀에 있는 여자애들 좋지?

Yeah.

맞아.

They’re my fam.

같은 팀이잖아.

A couple pronunciation things here: We have the AA vowel followed by the M consonant.

알아야 할 두가지 발음이 있답니다. AA 모음과 그 뒤에 따라오는 M 자음입니다.

So that changes the AA vowel a little bit, it’s not pure, it morphs into an UH sound:

M 자음으로 인해 AA 모음은 약간 변해요. 완전하지는 않지만, UH 소리로요.

Faa--- aa-uh, aa-uh, fam, fam.

Fam. It’s not a pure AA, aa, faaaam.

Fam. 완전한 AA 발음은 아니에요.

But fam, aa—aa—fam.

Now, with ‘family’, most people will make that a two-syllable word, FAM-ly. FAM-ly.

이제 'family' 로 들어가보죠. 대부분의 사람들은 2음절의 단어로 발음해요. FAM-ly. FAM-ly.

It can also be three syllables: FAM-uh-li.

3음절이 될 수도 있어요. FAM-uh-li.

And a lot of non-native speakers do that.

많은 비영어권 화자들이 그렇게 한답니다.

But I suggest you stick with just two syllables,

하지만 저는 2음절로 발음하는 방법을 추천해요.

I think it sounds much more natural.

그게 더 자연스럽게 들리기 때문이에요.

Family.

Family.

Family.

Family.

Family.

Family.

Fam.

Fam.

Use these terms with people you love, you feel really connected to.

앞서 말한 이 단어들을 당신이 가깝다고 느끼고, 사랑하는 사람들에게 써보세요.

Now, FACTS.

이제 'FACTS' 입니다.

This one came to me through a friend who works in a high school.

이건 고등학교에서 일하는 제 친구가 알려준 것인데요.

He says it’s being used as a response, an affirmative response.

긍정적인 대답을 할 때 쓰는 말이라고 해요.

For example: That’s a dope sweater.

예를 들어볼게요. 그 스웨터 예쁘다.

Facts.

맞아.

I did a little search on #facts on Instagram

인스타그램에서 #facts 를 검색해봤어요.

– always an amazing way to add context to the meaning of slang.

인스타그램은 속어의 의미를 파악하고자 할 때 정말 좋은 수단이죠.

#facts has over 11 million public posts.

#facts 는 1,100만 개의 게시글에서 찾아볼 수 있었는데요.

It’s used to be definitive.

확고한 어조로 말할 때 쓰였답니다.

It’s like: What I’m saying is true.

내가 말하는 건 진실이야. 이런 것과 같죠.

I think it can also be used to show defiance.

저는 반항을 표현할 때도 쓰인다고 생각 했어요.

It’s like, you say that, but I say this.

이런 식으로요. 넌 그렇게 말해. 근데 난 이렇게 말할거야.

And I say, facts.

그리고 내가 말하는 건 전부 사실이야.

Because I don’t care what you say.

그러니까 너가 뭐라 말하든 난 신경 안써.

Let’s talk about the pronunciation.

발음에 대해서도 이야기 해봅시다.

In American English, we often drop the T between two other consonants.

미국 영어에서, 자음과 자음 사이에 있는 T는 보통 탈락돼요.

We do that here most of the time.

이 경우에도 대부분 그렇게 해요.

I think once in this video, I did a really light T release: facts.

이 영상에서 한번은 T 를 아주 살짝 발음 했었어요.

But usually, we just say: facts.

하지만 대개는 이렇게 말한답니다. (T 발음 없이)

Facts.

Facts.

So don’t think about trying to make a T sound, just make KS.

T 소리를 굳이 발음하지 말고, KS 소리를 발음 한다고 생각하세요.

Facts.

Facts

When you do this, it will sound just like this word: fax.

fax 와 비슷하게 발음이 될 텐데요.

That’s okay.

괜찮아요.

Context is there to helps us tell the two words apart.

문맥을 보고 두 단어를 구별할 수 있으니까요.

So we often drop the T between 2 other consonants.

T는 자음과 자음 사이에서 탈락 된다고 했죠.

A couple other common words in which we can do this: directly, directly.

두 가지 또 다른 사례가 있어요. 먼저 directly 를 예로 들어볼게요.

I’m not saying the T there.

T 를 발음하지 않았어요.

It comes between 2 consonants.

두 개의 자음 사이에 있었기 때문이에요.

When is it okay to use slang, and when do you want to make sure you’re NOT using slang?
