What is a heteronym? A homophone?

In this American English Pronunciation video, we’re going to go over why we need the IPA.

The International Phonetic Alphabet was created by the International Phonetic Association

The International Phonetic Alphabet은 the International Phonetic Association에 의해 만들어졌습니다.

as a standardized way to write the sounds of spoken language.

이것은 구어(口語)의 소리들을 적기 위한 표준화된 방법입니다.

Why do we need this?

우리는 왜 이것이 필요할까요?

Because English is not a phonetic language

왜냐하면 영어는 음성언어가 아니기 때문입니다.

— that means there’s not a 1:1 relationship between letters and sounds.

이 말은 글자와 소리가 1:1로 대응하지 않는다는 뜻입니다.

For example, these words:

예를 들면, 이런 단어들입니다.

They look the same except for the first letter.

이 단어들은 첫번째 글자를 제외하고는 똑같이 생겼습니다.

They look like they should be pronounced the same except for the first sound.

그래서 첫소리를 제외하면 모두 똑같이 발음해야 할 것 같습니다.

But that’s not the case.

하지만 그렇지 않죠.

‘Love’ has the UH as in BUTTER vowel.

'Love'는 'BUTTER'와 같은 UH 모음입니다.

‘Cove’ has the OH diphthong,

'Cove'는 OH 이중모음 입니다.

and ‘move’ has the OO vowel.

그리고 'Move'는 OO 모음입니다.

Uh, oh, oo.

Uh, Oh, oo

Love, cove, move.

Love, cove, move

There are no rules to tell you which word should be pronounced which way,

여기에는 어떤 단어가 어떻게 발음되어야 한다는 규칙이 없습니다.

you just have to know.

그냥 알아야만 하죠.

You just have to learn the pronunciation when you learn the word.

다만 우리가 그 단어를 배울 때 발음도 같이 배워야만 합니다.

Let's go a little further. What about this word?

그렇다면 조금 더 해봅시다. 이 단어는 어떤가요?

It looks like the other three words, and its pronunciation is ‘dove’, just like ‘love’.

다른 세 개의 단어들처럼 생겼죠. 그리고 발음은 'love'처럼 'dove' 입니다.

Wait, no. Its pronunciation is ‘dove’, just like ‘cove’.

아뇨, 잠시만요. 발음이 'cove'처럼 'dove'입니다.

Actually, both pronunciations are right.

사실 두 발음 모두 맞습니다.

For the noun, the bird, it’s ‘dove’. UH.

명사 일때는, 새 말이죠. 'dove'. UH 입니다.

But for the verb, past tense of ‘dive’, it’s pronounced ‘dove’.

하지만 'dive'의 과거형 동사일 때의 발음은 'dove'입니다.

So again, we need IPA to write these different sounds

그래서 다시, 우리는 이러한 다른 소리들을 적기 위해서 IPA가 필요합니다.

so we can see that words are spelled the same, may still be pronounced differently.

그래서 우리는 같은 철자의 단어들이 다르게 발음될 수도 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

This is called a heteronym.

이것을 heteronym(동철 이음 이의어)라고 합니다.

One more confusing point: homophones.

한가지 더 헷갈리는 것은 homophones(동음이의어)입니다.

Words that are spelled differently, but pronounced the same.

철자는 다르지만, 발음이 같은 단어들입니다.

For example, pear.

예를 들어, pear.

Just one pronunciation for these two words: pear, pair.

한가지 발음이지만 이 두 단어들에 모두 해당합니다. pear, pair.

There are lots of homophones in American English.

미국 영어에는 많은 동음이의어들이 있습니다.

So we need the IPA to see, oh, they’re spelled differently, but they’re pronounced the same.

그래서 우리는 오, 다른 철자이지만 같은 발음이구나,를 알기 위해서 IPA가 필요합니다.

When you write a sound, in IPA, with a symbol instead of a letter, there’s no confusion.

IPA로 철자 대신 상징을 사용해서 소리를 적을 때에는 혼동이 없습니다.

You’re going to see a lot of IPA in the Rachel’s English Academy,
