7, 8월에 올라오는 모든 영상들은 미국 속어와 그 의미에 대한 것들입니다.

Today we’re looking at slang that uses acronyms, like GOAT and BAE.

오늘은 GOAT 와 BAE 같은 두음문자에 대해 알아볼거예요.

What do they mean?

이것들은 대체 무슨 뜻이죠?

How should you use them? Let’s find out.

대체 어떻게 써야하는 것들일까요? 같이 알아봅시다.

In this video, we’re also going to talk about when it’s appropriate to use slang.

그리고 속어를 언제 써야 적절한지에 대해서도 이야기 해보도록 해요.

Hint: not all the time.

Back to slang.

다시 본론으로 돌아갑시다.

An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words.

두음문자는 단어들의 앞 글자만을 따서 축약한 것을 말해요.

So ‘bae’ comes from a phrase with three words that start with B, A, and E.

그러니까 'bae' 는 B, A, 그리고 E로 시작하는 세개의 단어로부터 만들어진 거죠.

Before anyone else.

누구보다 최우선적인 사람.

So this would be your boyfriend or girlfriend, your significant other.

남자친구나 여자친구처럼 당신에게 아주 중요한 다른 누군가를 말하는 거랍니다.

David’s my bae.

데이비드는 제게 있어 최우선적인 사람이에요.

But, what often happens with slang is a term will evolve.

그런데 속어는 종종 진화합니다.

And from what I understand, now anything can be bae. Like, ‘pizza is bae’.

제가 원래 알고 있던 의미로부터 더 발전해서, 이제는 아무거나 'bae' 가 될 수 있어요. '피자가 내 bae다.' 이렇게요.

Someone who really loves pizza might say that.

피자를 정말 좋아하는 사람이라면 저렇게 말하겠죠.

GOAT.

GOAT.

A phrase where we have a phrase with four words beginning with G, O, A, T.

각각 G, O, A, T 로 시작하는 네가지 단어들에서 만들어진 표현입니다.

This stands for greatest of all time.

'역대급 (greatest of all time)' 을 뜻해요.

The absolute best, the absolute best at something.

어떤 것의 최고치를 말하는 거죠.

Of course the word ‘goat’, not in all caps is also an animal.

물론 소문자로만 썼을 땐 '염소'를 의미합니다.

Unrelated meaning.

전혀 관계 없는 뜻이랍니다.

Unless you think a goat is the greatest animal of all time, then the meaning is related.

염소가 역대급 동물이라고 생각한다면, 그 때는 관계가 있다 해도 되겠네요.

I said in my last video, a great way to get context for the meaning of slang is to go to Instagram.

저번 영상에서 말씀 드렸듯이, 속어가 쓰이는 맥락을 알고자 할 때는 인스타그램으로 가보는 게 최고예요.

Let’s do that.

가봅시다.

330만 개의 게시글이 올라와 있네요.

Looks like most of them have to do with sports, doesn’t it?

대부분이 스포츠와 관련된 것들이네요. 그렇죠?

This person says ‘2 GOATS’, greatest of all times.

'2 GOATS' 래요. 정말 역대급이네요.

We have Jay Z and Michael Jordan.

제이지와 마이클 조던이잖아요.

Here’s Michael Phelps.

마이클 펠프스도 있고요.

Olympic swimmer.

올림픽 수영 선수죠.

Happy Birthday GOAT!

생일 축하해 GOAT!

Greatest of all time.

역대급으로 말이야.

And it looks like we even have some actual real goats.

그리고 진짜 염소들도 몇 마리 보이네요.

And finally, AF.

이제 마지막이에요. AF 입니다.

Now, I need to be careful here because I don’t want to be marked as explicit for using this cuss word.

이제, 저는 조심스러워질 필요가 있어요. 욕설을 써서 노골적으로 보이고 싶지는 않거든요.

This stands for ‘as fff.’

AF 는 '존*' 를 의미해요.

F beginning a four-letter word which is probably the worst cuss word in American English, or at least one of them.

F 는 네글자 단어인데요. 미국에서 제일 안 좋은 욕일거에요. 어쩌면 안 좋은 것들 중에 하나일 수도 있고요.

F consonant, UH as in BUTTER vowel,

F 자음과 UH 모음,

and the ending K consonant.

그리고 K 자음으로 끝이 나요.

So I’m not going to say it. You probably know it.

더 말하지 않을게요. 당신도 무엇인지 알테니까요.

But you can add this to pretty much any phrase to show intensity.

하지만 이 말은 보다 격한 표현을 위해 꽤나 많은 문장에 넣어서 쓸 수 있어요.

An extreme amount.

극심한 정도라고 말하는 거죠.

I’m tired AF.

I'm tired AF.

That means I’m sooo tired.

나 정말 정말 정말 피곤하다는 뜻이에요.

Now, even though you’re not saying the cuss word, you're just saying 'F',

이제, 굳이 욕을 하지 않더라도 F라고만 말하면 돼요.

it is slang that involves a cuss word. So be really careful about how you use it,

욕설이 포함된 속어이기 때문에 사용할 때 정말 조심해야 한답니다.

when you use it, where you use it.

어떻게, 언제, 어디서 쓰는지 말이에요.

I’m hungry AF!

I'm hungry AF!

Only use it around people you’re comfortable swearing around.

편한 사람들과 함께 있을 때만 쓰세요.

And actually, that takes me to an important point.

중요한 포인트를 말할 때가 됐네요.

When is it appropriate to use slang in general?

평상시에 속어는 언제 써야 괜찮을까요?

I guess the main guide that I would use for this is:

저는 그 지침을 이렇게 하고 싶어요.

only use it around people who are also using slang.

속어를 쓰는 사람과 있을 때 쓰라는 거죠.

Let the people you’re talking with guide the appropriateness of that.

당신과 함께 이야기 하는 사람들이 이 지침을 지키게끔 해보세요.

For example, I would say in general, it’s not a good idea to use slang in a work environment,

예를 들어서, 속어를 직장 내에서 쓴다는 건 좋은 생각이 아니죠.

but maybe you work in a laid-back setting with lots of younger people and they use slang a lot in conversation.

하지만 직장에서라도 등을 지고 누워 수많은 젊은 사람들과 함께 있다고 한다면, 그들은 속어를 엄청 쓸거예요.

Great, then you can feel free to use it.

좋아요. 이제 자유롭게 써도 된다는 거죠.

Honestly, when you’re in a situation where other people are using slang,

당신이 속어를 쓰는 사람들과 함께 있는 상황이라면,

that’s really where you’re going to get to know what current slang is,

그 상황이야말로 유행하는 속어가 뭔지 알 수 있는 곳이 된답니다. 정말로요.

what it means, and how to use it.

그게 무슨 뜻이고, 어떻게 쓰는지 말이에요.

And if you don’t know what it means, don’t be afraid to ask.

무슨 뜻인지 모르겠다면, 물어보는 걸 주저하지 말아요.

It’s not just because you’re a non-native speaker.

비영어권 화자라서가 아니에요.

It’s because it’s slang, and lots of native speakers also don’t know what certain terms mean.

속어잖아요. 많은 영어권 화자들도 그 말이 정확히 무슨 뜻인지는 잘 몰라요.

Let’s go over the pronunciations.

발음으로 넘어가봅시다.

So we have bae, goat, and AF.

우리 bae, goat, 그리고 AF 에 대해서 이야기해봤네요.

What’s interesting is, bae and goat,

흥미로운 점이 하나 있어요. bae 와 goat 는 우리가 단어로써 말하잖아요.

we say both of those as words.

But AF, we say the letters out loud.

하지만 AF 는 알파벳들을 그대로 말해요.

When you’re saying a sequence of letters, it’s always the last letter that gets stressed.

글자들을 나열해서 말할 때는, 항상 마지막 글자에 강세가 온답니다.

So it’s a-F. Fff-- Not A-f.

So it's a-F. Fff-Not A-f.

a-F. da-DA.

a-F. da-DA.

Stress pattern: da-DA. Second syllable stress.

da-DA. 두번째 음절에 강세가 오는 패턴입니다.

Bae: simple pronunciation.

bae 는 발음하기 쉬워요.

B and the AY diphthong.

B 와 이중모음 AY 만 발음하면 돼요.

But I’ve been teaching English long enough to know that a lot of people have problems with the AY diphthong.

하지만 영어를 오랫동안 가르쳐오면서 많은 사람들이 이중모음 AY 를 발음하는 것을 어려워 한다는 것을 알게 됐어요.

It’s really common to say beh- or bey instead.

beh, 아니면 bey로 발음 하는 경우가 정말 많아요.

Eh, ey.

Eh, ey.

Both of those are vowel sounds. But we need a diphthong:

이 소리들은 모두 모음이에요. 하지만 우리는 이중모음으로 발음해야 하죠.

a changing sound with two positions.

두가지 위치를 통해 소리가 바뀌는 거에요.

Bae--

Bae-

So drop your jaw: bae-- then bring it up. Bae.

턱을 밑으로 벌렸다가 다시 올려보세요.

Bae.

Bae.

You’re my bae.

You're my bae.

Goat: We have another diphthong.

Goat에도 또 다른 이중모음이 있어요.

Two positions: jaw drop and lip rounding.

턱을 밑으로 벌리고, 입술을 동그랗게 하는 거에요.

Oh, oh, oh. Goat.

Goat.

Goaat.

Goaat.

Now, the ending T pronunciation can be a True T, goat,

마지막 T 발음은 선명하게 발음이 되거나,

or a Stop T, goat.

아니면 소리를 내지 않기도 해요.

Goat, goat, goat.

goat, goat, goat.
