American English Slang – How to use DUMB

In this American English Pronunciation video,

이번 영어 발음 영상에서는

we’re going to go over the pronunciation and slang use of DUMB.

DUMB의 발음과 속어로서의 쓰임을 알아볼거예요.

The word DUMB is most commonly used as an adjective

DUMB은 대부분 형용사로 쓰입니다.

meaning stupid or unintelligent.

바보 같고, 멍청하다는 뜻이죠.

That was a dumb decision.

그건 바보 같은 결정이었어.

I’m too dumb to pass the final.

난 최종 합격 하기에는 너무 멍청해.

But it’s also slang.

하지만 속어로 쓰일 때도 있답니다.

In these cases, it means ‘very’.

이 경우에는, '아주(very)'를 의미해요.

I thought of this video when I noticed my husband, David, and I calling our new baby ‘dumb cute’.

제가 이 주제를 떠올렸던건, 제 남편 데이비드 때문이었어요. 저는 제 아이를 'dumb cute'라고 불러요.

What’s Stoney doing?

스토니는 요즘 어때?

He’s being dumb cute.

진짜 귀여워.

David, who works in a high school,

데이비드는 고등학교에서 일하고 있는데요.

said his kids use ‘dumb’ as ‘very’ all the time.

학생들이 매번 'dumb'을 'very(아주)'로 사용한다고 알려줬어요.

You’ve probably noticed that the B is silent. Don’t say it.

B 소리가 묵음이라는 걸 눈치 채셨겠네요. B는 소리 내지 않는답니다.

This word, whether in slang or it’s real meaning, is just three sounds:

속어로 쓰든, 원래의 의미로 쓰든 이 단어는 세 가지 소리만 있으면 돼요.

The D consonant, the UH as in BUTTER vowel,

자음 D, 모음 UH,

and the M consonant. Dumb. Dumb.

그리고 자음 M이 그 소리들이에요.

To make the D, the tongue goes to the roof of the mouth.

D 소리를 내려면 혀를 입 천장에 닿게 하면 되요.

Dumb.

The teeth don’t need to come all the way together but they can. Duh—dumb.

혀를 치아까지 굳이 닿게 할 필요는 없답니다. 물론 그렇게 할 수는 있지만요.

Release into the UH as in BUTTER vowel,

버터처럼 미끄러지듯 UH 모음으로 소리를 풀어주세요.

where everything in your face and throat should be relaxed.

얼굴과 목의 모든 부분이 긴장을 풀고 있어야 해요.

Duh--

And finally, close the lips for the M consonant. Dumb.

그리고 마지막으로, 양 입술을 다물며 M 소리를 냅니다.

Albert Einstein: that man was dumb smart.

알버트 아인슈타인. 정말 똑똑한 사람이죠.

Stoney is dumb cute.

스토니는 진짜 귀여워요.

He is dumb tall.

그는 키가 엄청 커.

That test was dumb hard.

그 시험 너무 어려웠어.

When is it appropriate to use slang?

속어는 어떤 상황에서 적절하게 쓰일까요?

Only in a very casual environment.

지극히 일상적인 상황에서만 적절할거예요.

With friends, when you’re just hanging out, when the mood is relaxed.

친구들과 있을 때나, 놀러 나갈 때나, 편안할 때 말이에요.

Don’t use it in a job interview, and don’t use it with a friend in a serious situation.

면접에서는 쓰면 안돼요. 친구가 심각한 상황에 있을 때도요.

For example:

예를 들면,

My dog died.

내 강아지가 죽었어.

I’m dumb sorry.

그거 더럽게 안됐네.

No, not appropriate.

안돼요. 적절하지 않아요.

'Oh, I’m really sorry. ' or 'I’m so sorry to hear that.'

'유감이다.' 혹은 '정말 안됐다.' 이렇게 말해야 했어요.
