“How Language Changes: 5 English Words with Different Meanings in the Past”

Hello students. Today I have what I hope will be  a fun and interesting English vocabulary lesson.  

Olá alunos. Hoje eu tenho o que espero ser uma aula de vocabulário de inglês divertida e interessante.

Today I am going to teach  you some vocabulary words  

Hoje vou ensinar a vocês algumas palavras do vocabulário

that used to have different meanings. That means  the meaning of these words has changed over time. 

que costumavam ter significados diferentes. Isso significa que o significado dessas palavras mudou com o tempo.

The first English vocabulary word that  has changed its meaning is awful. Awful  

A primeira palavra do vocabulário em inglês que mudou de significado é horrível. Horrível

used to mean worthy of awe. Awe  means a felling of great respect  

costumava significar digno de admiração. Admiração significa um sentimento de grande respeito

for something or someone. A very positive word.  Awful, and awesome used to mean the same thing.  

por algo ou alguém. Uma palavra muito positiva. Horrível e incrível costumavam significar a mesma coisa.

For some reason, over time, awful became a  word that meant something, or someone is bad.  

Por algum motivo, com o tempo, terrível tornou-se uma palavra que significava algo ou alguém é ruim.

Like the word horrible. An awful person,  an awful thing. Today awful is bad and  

Como a palavra horrível. Uma pessoa horrível, uma coisa horrível. Hoje horrível é ruim e

awesome means something is very good. Here’s an example: 

incrível significa que algo é muito bom. Aqui está um exemplo:

The past… A: How was your meal? 

O passado… A: Como foi sua refeição?

B: It was the best meal I have ever had. Like it  was delivered from heaven. It was truly awful. 

B: Foi a melhor refeição que já comi. Como se fosse entregue do céu. Foi realmente horrível.

Now… A: How was your meal? 

Agora... A: Como foi sua refeição?

B: It was the worst meal I have  ever had. It was truly awful. 

B: Foi a pior refeição que já fiz. Foi realmente horrível.

The next vocabulary word that has changed  meaning over time is bully. You don’t want  

A próxima palavra do vocabulário que mudou de significado ao longo do tempo é valentão. Você não quer

to be called a bully nowadays but maybe  you wouldn’t have minded it in the past.  

ser chamado de valentão hoje em dia, mas talvez não se importasse com isso no passado.

Now bully is used to describe a person who  wants to do harm to others either physically,  

Agora, valentão é usado para descrever uma pessoa que deseja prejudicar os outros fisicamente,

mentally, or through words. The original meaning  of bully was used to describe someone who is sweet  

mentalmente ou por meio de palavras. O significado original de valentão foi usado para descrever alguém que é doce

and nice. The past…

A: Can I help you with that? B: Sure, thanks. You are such a bully. 

A: Posso ajudá-lo com isso? B: Claro, obrigado. Você é um valentão.

Now… A: Can  

Agora... A:

I help you with that? B: You are such a bully. 

Posso   ajudar você com isso? B: Você é um valentão.

The next word is nervous. We all  get nervous from time to time.  

A próxima palavra é nervoso. Todos nós ficamos nervosos de vez em quando.

Nervous is when someone is very anxious or  agitated. Maybe you get nervous before a test  

Nervoso é quando alguém está muito ansioso ou agitado. Talvez você fique nervoso antes de um teste

or an interview. In the past though, nervous  referred to someone who had great strength. 

ou entrevista. No passado, porém, nervoso referia-se a alguém que tinha grande força.

The past… A: How’s

it going? B: Pretty good! I’m getting

ready for my interview as a dragon fighter. A: Wow! You must be nervous.

Now… A: How’s it going?

B: Not very well. I have a job interview tomorrow. A: Oh, you must be nervous. 

B: Não muito bem. Tenho uma entrevista de emprego amanhã. A: Ah, você deve estar nervoso.

Next up is the vocabulary word sad. We all know  the meaning of sad and we all know the feeling  

Em seguida é a palavra do vocabulário triste. Todos nós sabemos o significado de triste e todos conhecemos o sentimento

of sad, but in the past this word meant that you  were satisfied. In the past sad often referred to  

de tristeza, mas no passado essa palavra significava que você estava satisfeito. No passado, triste geralmente se referia a

feeling full from a meal. The past… 

sentir-se satisfeito com uma refeição. O passado...

A: How are you feeling today? B: I am feeling sad. I just had a big meal. 

A: Como você está se sentindo hoje? B: Estou me sentindo triste. Acabei de fazer uma grande refeição.

Now… A: How are you feeling today? 

Agora... A: Como você está se sentindo hoje?

B: I’m a little sad because  I haven’t eaten anything yet.

B: Estou um pouco triste porque ainda não comi nada.

The last English vocabulary word that has changed  meaning is dapper. This word was originally used  

A última palavra do vocabulário em inglês que mudou de significado é elegante. Esta palavra foi originalmente usada

to describe someone who was brave, bold, and  daring. Now it is used to describe a well-dressed  

para descrever alguém que era corajoso, ousado e ousado. Agora é usado para descrever um homem bem vestido

man. Someone who looks nice in a  suit can be described as dapper. 

. Alguém que fica bem em um terno pode ser descrito como elegante.

How’s Danny these days? B: He’s great! He just got
