“How Language Changes: 5 English Words with Different Meanings in the Past”

Hello students. Today I have what I hope will be  a fun and interesting English vocabulary lesson.  

Hola estudiantes. Hoy tengo lo que espero sea una lección de vocabulario en inglés divertida e interesante.

Today I am going to teach  you some vocabulary words  

Hoy les voy a enseñar algunas palabras de vocabulario

that used to have different meanings. That means  the meaning of these words has changed over time. 

que solían tener diferentes significados. Eso significa que el significado de estas palabras ha cambiado con el tiempo.

The first English vocabulary word that  has changed its meaning is awful. Awful  

La primera palabra del vocabulario en inglés que ha cambiado de significado es horrible. Terrible

used to mean worthy of awe. Awe  means a felling of great respect  

solía significar digno de asombro. Asombro significa un sentimiento de gran respeto

for something or someone. A very positive word.  Awful, and awesome used to mean the same thing.  

por algo o alguien. Una palabra muy positiva. Horrible e impresionante solían significar lo mismo.

For some reason, over time, awful became a  word that meant something, or someone is bad.  

Por alguna razón, con el tiempo, awful se convirtió en una palabra que significaba algo, o alguien es malo.

Like the word horrible. An awful person,  an awful thing. Today awful is bad and  

Como la palabra horrible. Una persona horrible, una cosa horrible. Hoy horrible es malo y

awesome means something is very good. Here’s an example:

The past… A: How was your meal? 

El pasado... A: ¿Cómo estuvo tu comida?

B: It was the best meal I have ever had. Like it  was delivered from heaven. It was truly awful. 

B: Fue la mejor comida que he tenido. Como si fuera entregada del cielo. Fue realmente horrible.

Now… A: How was your meal? 

Ahora... A: ¿Cómo estuvo tu comida?

B: It was the worst meal I have  ever had. It was truly awful. 

B: Fue la peor comida que he tenido. Fue realmente horrible.

The next vocabulary word that has changed  meaning over time is bully. You don’t want  

La siguiente palabra del vocabulario que ha cambiado de significado con el tiempo es bully. No quieres

to be called a bully nowadays but maybe  you wouldn’t have minded it in the past.  

que te llamen matón hoy en día, pero tal vez no te hubiera importado en el pasado.

Now bully is used to describe a person who  wants to do harm to others either physically,  

Ahora, bully se usa para describir a una persona que quiere hacer daño a otros, ya sea física,

mentally, or through words. The original meaning  of bully was used to describe someone who is sweet  

mental o con palabras. El significado original de matón se usaba para describir a alguien que es dulce

and nice. The past… 

y agradable. El pasado…

A: Can I help you with that? B: Sure, thanks. You are such a bully. 

A: ¿Puedo ayudarte con eso? B: Claro, gracias. Eres un matón.

Now… A: Can  

Ahora... A: ¿

I help you with that? B: You are such a bully. 

Puedo ayudarte con eso? B: Eres un matón.

The next word is nervous. We all  get nervous from time to time.  

La siguiente palabra es nervioso. Todos nos ponemos nerviosos de vez en cuando.

Nervous is when someone is very anxious or  agitated. Maybe you get nervous before a test  

Nervioso es cuando alguien está muy ansioso o agitado. Tal vez te pongas nervioso antes de un examen

or an interview. In the past though, nervous  referred to someone who had great strength. 

o una entrevista. Sin embargo, en el pasado, nervioso se refería a alguien que tenía una gran fuerza.

The past… A: How’s  

El pasado… A: ¿Cómo

it going? B: Pretty good! I’m getting  

te va? B: ¡Bastante bien! Me estoy

ready for my interview as a dragon fighter. A: Wow! You must be nervous.

Now… A: How’s it going?

B: Not very well. I have a job interview tomorrow. A: Oh, you must be nervous.

Next up is the vocabulary word sad. We all know  the meaning of sad and we all know the feeling  

El siguiente es la palabra de vocabulario triste. Todos conocemos el significado de triste y todos conocemos el sentimiento

of sad, but in the past this word meant that you  were satisfied. In the past sad often referred to  

de tristeza, pero en el pasado esta palabra significaba que estabas satisfecho. En el pasado, la tristeza a menudo se refería a

feeling full from a meal. The past…

A: How are you feeling today? B: I am feeling sad. I just had a big meal.

B: I’m a little sad because  I haven’t eaten anything yet.

The last English vocabulary word that has changed  meaning is dapper. This word was originally used  

La última palabra del vocabulario en inglés que ha cambiado de significado es dapper. Esta palabra se usó originalmente

to describe someone who was brave, bold, and  daring. Now it is used to describe a well-dressed  

para describir a alguien que era valiente, audaz y audaz. Ahora se usa para describir a un hombre bien vestido

man. Someone who looks nice in a  suit can be described as dapper. 

. Alguien que se ve bien con un traje puede describirse como elegante.

The past… A:  

El pasado... A:

How’s Danny these days? B: He’s great! He just got
