“How Language Changes: 5 English Words with Different Meanings in the Past”

Hello students. Today I have what I hope will be  a fun and interesting English vocabulary lesson.  

안녕하세요 학생. 오늘 저는 재미있고 흥미로운 영어 어휘 수업이 되길 바라는 내용을 가지고 있습니다.

Today I am going to teach  you some vocabulary words  

오늘은

that used to have different meanings. That means  the meaning of these words has changed over time. 

이전에 다른 의미를 가졌던 몇 가지 어휘를 가르쳐 드리겠습니다. 이는 이 단어의 의미가 시간이 지남에 따라 변경되었음을 의미합니다. 의미를 바꾼

The first English vocabulary word that  has changed its meaning is awful. Awful  

최초의 영어 단어는 끔찍합니다. Awful은

used to mean worthy of awe. Awe  means a felling of great respect  

경외할 가치가 있다는 의미로 사용되었습니다. 경외감은 무언가 또는 누군가에 대한 큰 존경심의 벌채를 의미합니다

for something or someone. A very positive word.  Awful, and awesome used to mean the same thing.  

. 매우 긍정적인 말입니다. 끔찍하고 굉장한 것은 같은 것을 의미했습니다.

For some reason, over time, awful became a  word that meant something, or someone is bad.  

어떤 이유에서인지 시간이 지남에 따라 무서운은 무언가를 의미하거나 누군가가 나쁘다는 단어가 되었습니다.

Like the word horrible. An awful person,  an awful thing. Today awful is bad and  

끔찍하다는 단어처럼. 끔찍한 사람, 끔찍한 것. 오늘 끔찍한 것은 나쁘고

awesome means something is very good. Here’s an example: 

굉장하다는 것은 어떤 것이 매우 좋다는 것을 의미합니다. 예를 들면 다음과 같습니다.

The past… A: How was your meal? 

과거… A: 식사는 어땠습니까?

B: It was the best meal I have ever had. Like it  was delivered from heaven. It was truly awful. 

B: 내가 먹어본 것 중 최고의 식사였어. 마치 하늘에서 배달된 것처럼. 정말 끔찍했습니다.

Now… A: How was your meal? 

지금… A: 식사는 어땠어?

B: It was the worst meal I have  ever had. It was truly awful. 

B: 내가 먹어본 것 중 최악의 식사였어 . 정말 끔찍했습니다.

The next vocabulary word that has changed  meaning over time is bully. You don’t want  

시간이 지남에 따라 의미가 변경된 다음 어휘는 괴롭힘입니다. 당신은

to be called a bully nowadays but maybe  you wouldn’t have minded it in the past.  

요즘 괴롭힘을 당하는 것을 원하지 않지만 아마도 과거에는 신경 쓰지 않았을 것입니다.

Now bully is used to describe a person who  wants to do harm to others either physically,  

이제 괴롭힘은 다른 사람에게 신체적,

mentally, or through words. The original meaning  of bully was used to describe someone who is sweet  

정신적 또는 말로 해를 가하려는 사람을 설명하는 데 사용됩니다. 괴롭힘의 원래 의미는 다정하고 착한 사람을 묘사하는 데 사용되었습니다

and nice. The past…

A: Can I help you with that? B: Sure, thanks. You are such a bully. 

A: 도와드릴까요? B: 네, 감사합니다. 당신은 정말 괴롭힘입니다.

Now… A: Can  

이제… A:

I help you with that? B: You are such a bully. 

도와드릴까요? B: 당신은 정말 깡패입니다.

The next word is nervous. We all  get nervous from time to time.  

다음 단어는 긴장됩니다. 우리 모두는 때때로 긴장합니다.

Nervous is when someone is very anxious or  agitated. Maybe you get nervous before a test  

초조함은 누군가가 매우 불안해하거나 동요하는 경우입니다. 시험 면접 전에 긴장할 수도 있습니다

or an interview. In the past though, nervous  referred to someone who had great strength. 

. 하지만 과거에는 긴장이 큰 힘을 가진 사람을 가리켰습니다.

The past… A: How’s  

과거… A:

it going? B: Pretty good! I’m getting  

어때요? B: 꽤 좋아!

ready for my interview as a dragon fighter. A: Wow! You must be nervous.

드래곤 파이터로서의 인터뷰를 준비하고 있습니다. A: 와우! 당신은 긴장해야합니다.

Now… A: How’s it going? 

지금… A: 어떻게 지내요?

B: Not very well. I have a job interview tomorrow. A: Oh, you must be nervous. 

B: 별로. 내일 면접이 있어요. A: 아, 긴장하시겠군요.

Next up is the vocabulary word sad. We all know  the meaning of sad and we all know the feeling  

다음은 슬픈 단어입니다. 우리 모두는 슬픔의 의미를 알고

of sad, but in the past this word meant that you  were satisfied. In the past sad often referred to  

슬픔의 느낌도 알고 있지만 과거에는 이 단어가 만족을 의미했습니다 . 과거에는

feeling full from a meal. The past… 

식사에서 포만감을 느끼는 것을 자주 언급했습니다. 과거…

A: How are you feeling today? B: I am feeling sad. I just had a big meal. 

A: 오늘 기분이 어때? B: 슬퍼요. 나는 방금 큰 식사를했다.

Now… A: How are you feeling today? 

지금… A: 오늘 기분이 어때?

B: I’m a little sad because  I haven’t eaten anything yet.

B: 아직 아무것도 먹지 않아서 조금 슬퍼요. 의미가

The last English vocabulary word that has changed  meaning is dapper. This word was originally used  

바뀐 마지막 영어 단어는 dapper입니다. 이 단어는 원래

to describe someone who was brave, bold, and  daring. Now it is used to describe a well-dressed  

용감하고 대담하며 대담한 사람을 묘사하기 위해 사용되었습니다 . 이제는 잘 차려입은 남자를 묘사하는 데 사용됩니다

man. Someone who looks nice in a  suit can be described as dapper. 

. 정장이 잘 어울리는 사람은 단정한 사람이라고 할 수 있습니다.

How’s Danny these days? B: He’s great! He just got  

Danny 요즘 어때? B: 그는 훌륭해! 그는

a new job as a dragon fighter. A: Wow! He’s so dapper. 

방금 드래곤 파이터라는 새로운 직업을 얻었습니다. A: 와우! 그는 너무 멋져요.

Now… A: Hey, what do you think of my  

이제… A: 이봐, 내

new suit? I got it for my job interview. B: Wow! You look dapper in that suit.  

새 양복 어때? 면접용으로 받았습니다. 나: 와! 그 옷을 입은 당신은 멋져 보입니다.
