Do you know what stress means?

It’s one of the most important pronunciation points in English.

هي من احد أهم النقاط الواجب اخذ النظر بها من اجل لفظ صحيح للغة الانلكيزية

When you speak English, do other people find it difficult to understand what you’re saying?

عندما تتحدث اللغة الانكليزية, هل تعاني من صعوبة فهم الأخرين لما تقول؟

If so, you might not be using stress correctly.

اذا كان الجواب نعم, انت لربما لا تستخدم النبرة الصوتية بصورة صحيحة

Pronouncing words with the correct stress can make a big difference to your English:

لفظ الكلمات مع نبرة صوتية صحيحة يمكن ان يصنع فارق كبيرة لمستواك في اللغة الانلكيزية

your English will immediately sound clearer and more natural.

You’ll learn all about stress in this lesson, but first, we need to talk about syllables.

سوف تتعلم كل ما يخص النبرة الصوتية في هذا الدرس, لكن, يتوجب علينا الحديث على مقاطع الكلمات أولآ

Listen to four words:

أسمع الكلمات الأربعة التالية:

fast person

beautiful information

Do you know how many syllables these words have?

Fast has one syllable: fast Person has two syllables: per-son.

الكلمة الأولى Fast تتكون من مقطع واحد. الثانية person تتكون من مقطعين.

Beautiful has three syllables: beau-ti-ful Information has four syllables: in-for-ma-tion

الثالثة تتكون من ثلاث مقاطع , اما الرابعة من أربع مقاطع

A syllable has one vowel sound (and only one vowel sound) and one or more consonant sounds.

مقطع له حرف علة واحد وصوت علة واحد فقط وحرف واحد ساكن أو أكثر

Let’s do some more practice.

Look at four more words:

breakfast banana

How many syllables do they have?

Breakfast has two syllables: break-fast.

Banana has three syllables: ba-na-na.

Tomorrow has three syllables: to-mor-row.

University has five syllables: u-ni-ver-si-ty.

So, this lesson isn’t really about syllables; it’s about stress.

What’s the connection between syllables and stress?

فما هو الرابط بين المقاطع والضغط

Think about the word banana.

فكروا بشأن كلمة موزة

Banana has three syllables.

تحتوب موزة على ثلاث مقاطع

Do you pronounce all the syllables the same: bah-nah-nah?

هل تنطق جميع المقاطع بالشكل نفسه : باه ناه ناه

No, you don't—one syllable is stronger: ba-NA-na.

كلا , لست كذلك هنالك مقطع اقوى وهو : با -×نا- نا

This is stress.

وهذا هو الضغط

If a word has one syllable, you don't need to think about stress.

ان كان لدى الكلمة مقطع واحد فلست بحاجة للتفكير حيال الضغط

But, if a word has two syllables or more, one syllable is always stressed: it has a

ولكن , إن كان لدى الكلمة مقطعين أو أكثر , مقطع واحد يكون له دوما ضغط كامل . له

strong, clear pronunciation.

Let’s practice pronouncing word stress correctly.

فالنتدرب على نطق الكلمات ذوات الضغط بشكل صحيح

Let’s look at an example you just saw.

دعونا ننظر الى المثال الذي رأيته للتو

banana

موزة

Do you remember where the stress is?

هل تتذكر أين يقع الضغط

It’s on the second syllable: ba-NA-na.

إنه بالمقطع الثاني في نا

What makes the stressed syllable different?

مالذي يجعل من صوت الضغط مختلفا ؟

There are three things you need to do to pronounce stress correctly.

هنالك ثلاث أمور عليك بفعلها كي تنطق الضغط بشكل صحيح

One: the stressed syllable should be louder.

أولا : المقطع ذو الضغط يجب أن يكون عاليا

Two: the stressed syllable should be a little higher.

ثانيا : المقطع الذي يحتوي على ضغط يجب أن يكون أعلى قليلا

Three: the stressed syllable should be a little longer in time.

ثالثا : المقطع ذو الضغط ينبغي أن يكون أطول قليلا هذه المرة

First, listen to three words you saw before: person

Here, I was exaggerating the stress so that you can hear it clearly.

You don’t need to pronounce the stress this strongly.

However, when you practice, it’s a good idea to try to overpronounce the stress a

Next, let’s look at four more words you saw before:

This time, I pronounced the stress in a more natural way.

Where is the stress in these four words?

أين يقع الضغط في هذه الكلمات الاربع ؟

Let’s try one more time: breakfast, banana,

دعونا نحاول مرة أخرة مجددا . breakfast, banan

tomorrow, university.

When you look up a word, you can find the stress by looking at the phonetic transcription.

حينما تمعن النظر في الكلمة . فيسعك العثور على الضغط بواسطة النص الصوتي

The thing that looks like an apostrophe shows you where the stress is.

الشي الذي يظهر كفاصلة عليا يظهر لك موقع الضغط

When you see this apostrophe, the next syllable is the stressed syllable.

عندما ترى تلك الفاصلة العليا فالمقطع التالي هو المقطع الذي يحتوي على ضغط ( نبرة صوتية )

When you write down new vocabulary, make sure you record the stress, too.

عندما تدون مصطلحات جديدة . تأكد من أنك تسجل مكان الضغط

You can put a mark over the stressed syllable, or underline it.

يمكنك الإشارة إليه بعلامة على موقع المقطع المضغوط أو وضع خط أسفله

At this point, you might be thinking: are there any rules about word stress?

وبهذه النقطة , لعلك تفكر , هل يوجد هناك أي قاعدة بشأن الكلمات التي تحتوي على ضغط ؟

How do I know where the word stress is if I don’t have a dictionary?

Let’s talk about that.

We’ve got good news and bad news for you.

The good news is that there are some rules about word stress in English.

The bad news is that the rules don’t cover everything, and even the rules which you do

have don’t work all the time.

Here’s one rule which is quite useful.

It’s about words with two syllables.

Look at five words:

picture minute

picture minute

money doctor

money doctor

water

water

All these words have two syllables.

كل تلك الكلمات تحتوي على مقطعين

Where’s the stress?

فأين الضغط ؟

In all the words, the stress is on the 1st syllable.

في جميع الكلمات , الضغط يتواجد في المقطع الأول

There’s a reason for this: can you work it out?

هنالك سبب لهذا , هل يمكنك استنتاجه ؟

What connects these five words?

مالذي يربط تلك الكلمات الخمس ؟

These words are all nouns.

جميعها أسماء

Nouns with two syllables usually have stress on the 1st syllable.

الاسماء ذوات المقطعين يتواجد الضغط بها عادة في المقطع الأول

Let’s practice saying the words together.

دعونا نتدرب في قول تلك الكلمات سوية

Repeat after me: picture, minute, money, doctor, water.

رددوا ورائي : picture, minute, money, doctor, water

This is also true for most adjectives with two syllables:

وهذا أيضا ينطبق تقريا على غالبية الصفات ذوات المقطعين

happy yellow

useful formal

tiring

What about verbs?

ماذا بشأن الأفعال ؟

Look at some examples and try to work out the rule:

انظر الى بعض الأمثلة وحاول أن تستنج القاعدة

decide forget

explain arrive

repeat

Can you hear the stress?

أيمكنك سماع الضغط ؟

The stress is on the second syllable.

الضغط يقع بالمقطع الثاني

Let’s practice saying the words together.

Repeat after me: decide, forget, explain, arrive, repeat.

So, most nouns and adjectives with two syllables have the stress on the first syllable, and

إذا , فغالبية الأسماء , والصفات ذوات المقطعين لديها الضغط على مقطعها الأول , و

most verbs have the stress on the second syllable.

غالبية الأفعال لديها الضغط على مقطعها الثاني

Be careful, because there are many common exceptions, like hotel, happen, exam, or finish.

What about longer words?

Are there any rules you can use to find the stress?

In three-syllable words, the stress can be anywhere; it can be at the beginning:

It can be in the middle:

ويمكن أن يتواجد بالمنتصف

computer tomorrow

expensive

It can also be at the end, although this is less common:

afternoon employee

In words with four or more syllables, the stress is almost always in the middle of the

word, not on the first or last syllable.

For example:

Try saying the words after me: information, communicate, photographer.

There are some other rules which can help you to find the stress in longer words.

هنالك بعض القواعد الاخرى التي يسعها مساعدتك في إيجاد الضغط في الكلمات الطويلة

Let’s look together.

فالننظر سوية

If a word ends -tion, -sion or -cian, then the stress is always on the second last syllable:

أن انتهت كلمة بأحد اذا فالضغط يتواجد بالمقطع الثاني ابتداء بالعد من النهاية

information discussion

politician

Can you think of three more words like this?

هل يمكنك التفكير بثلاث كلمات على نفس الشاكلة

There are many, but here are three more suggestions: situation, revision, electrician.

يتواجد الكثير , ولكن هنا بعض الأمثلة

The same rule is true for words ending -ic:

نفس القاعدة تنطبق على الكلمات التي تحتوي على نهايتها

economic dramatic

Atlantic scientific

Again, all these words have the stress on the second last syllable.

ومجددا , جميع تلك الكلمات تحتوي على الضفط من المقطع الثاني ابتداء بالعد من نهاية الكلمة

If a word ends with the letter -y and has three or more syllables, then the stress is

ان انتهتى كلمة بالحرف Y و كان لديه ثلاث أو أربع مقاطع فموقع الضغط سيكون

two syllables before the last one.

بعد مقطعين اضافيين من بعد المقطع الاخير

For example:

مثلا

biology luckily

activity possibility

That means, if a word has three syllables and ends in -y, the stress is almost always

on the first syllable:

chemistry pregnancy

robbery

There’s one more rule which could help you here: if a longer word is made from a shorter

هنالك قاعد أخرى اخيرة يمكنها مساعدتك : إن كان هنالك كلمة طويلة تكونت من كلمة قصيرة

root word, then the stress is generally in the same place as the root word.

أي الكلمة مجردة من إضافتها , فسيكون الضغط عامة في نفس المكان بالكلمة المجردة

For example:

مثلا

comfort comfortable

discomfort uncomfortable

comfortably comforting

In all these words, the stress is in the same place as the root word, comfort.

في جميع تلك الكلمات , يتواجد الضغط في نفس مكان كلمته المجردة

However, the rules you saw before take priority.

مع ذلك , الكلمة التي رأيتها قبلا تتطلب الأولوية

This means that the stress can move when you make a longer word from a root word.

وهذا يعني , أن الضغط يمكن ان يتحرك حينما تصنع كلمة أطول من الكلمة المجردة

For example:

photograph -> photography -> photographic economy -> economic

educate -> education Okay, now you’ve learned about stress, how

But, there’s still one more very important thing you should know about.

Want to know a secret that will improve your English pronunciation really fast?

أترغب بمعرفة سر سيحسن من نطقك بشكل سريع

Here’s the most important point about word stress: it’s about contrast.

هاهنا أهم نقطة حيال الكلمات ذوات الضغط , وهو النقيض

That means, when you pronounce word stress, it’s not just about the stressed syllable.

وذلك يعني , عندما تقوم بنطق كلمة ذو نبرة صوتية ( ضغط ) , فلا يتعلق ذلك وحسب بشأن المقطع ذو الضغط

You also need to think about the unstressed syllables.

بل أنت أيضا بأمس الحاجة إلى معرفة الكلمة التي لا تحتوي على ضغط ( نبرة صوتية )

Remember that to pronounce stress, you make the stressed syllable louder, higher and longer.

Stress is about contrast, so the opposite is true for unstressed syllables: you need

to make them quieter, lower and shorter.

Let’s look at three words you’ve already practiced:

To pronounce the words well, you need to think about the unstressed syllables, too.

لكي تنطق الكلمات بالشكل الصحيح , فأنت بحاجة للتفكير بشأن المقاطع الغير مضغوطة أيضا

Often, the vowel sounds in the unstressed syllables are reduced to schwa sounds--/ə/,

غالبا , صوت العلة في الماقطع الغير مضغوطة يقل نطقهم إلى صوت العلة الخفيف ( الكسول ) أه

or short /ɪ/ sounds.

أو القصير إيء

‘Reduced’ means the vowel sounds are shorter and weaker.

For example, in the word banana, the stress is on the second syllable: ba-NA-na.

فمثلا , في كلمة با نانا يقع الضغط في المقطع الثاني نا

The stressed ‘a’ has an /aː/ sound, but the other two ‘a’s’ have schwa sounds:

الحرف ذو النبرة الصوتية a لديه صوت a: ولكن الآخران a و s لديها صوت شوا ( صوت خفيف وضعيف يسمى بالصوت الكسول )

banana.

In the word person, the first syllable is stressed, and the second syllable has a schwa

في كلمة شخص المقطع الأول يحتوي على ضغط والمقطع الثاني يحتوي على شوا

sound: person.

And in information, the syllables before and after the stressed syllable reduce to schwas:

وفي معلومات , فالمقاطع التي بالقبل والبعد المقاطع ذوات النبرة الصوتية ( الضغط ) فتقل الى ان تصبح شوا

information.

Unstressed syllables can’t always be reduced, but they often can be.

المقاطع الغير مضغوطة لايمكن أن تختزل دوما ولكن يمكن لها ان تختزل

If a vowel sound is reduced, it most often shortens to a schwa sound.

أن تم اختزال أو تقليل صوت علة , فغالبا ما يتم اختزاله الى صوت شوا

We’ll finish with a simple tip to help you pronounce word stress clearly and naturally.

سننهي الامر بملحوظة بسيطة تساعدك في نطق الضغط بوضوح وشكل طبيعي

Focus on the stressed syllable, and put more stress on it than you think you need.

ركز على المقطع المضغوط وضع أكثر الضغط عليه أكقر مما تفكر بالكم الذي يحتاجه

Pronounce the unstressed syllables as fast as you can.

انطق المقاطع الغير مضغوطة بشكل سريع قدر الإمكان

If you do this, you’ll have contrast in your pronunciation, and this will make your

وان فعلت ذلك , فسيحدث لك اختزال في نطقك وسيجعل ذلك من

word stress sound natural and clear.
