Is it really a rule? Or is it just pedantic bastards

Maybe once innocently you said

아마도 한 번은 천진난만하게

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAITING 'FOR'?

당신이 '~'을(를) 얼마나 기다렸나요?

and your pedantic "friend" who corrects

그리고 항상 당신의 문법을 고쳐주는 현학적인 "친구"가

your grammar all the time will say this.

이렇게 말할 것입니다.

"Never end a sentence with a preposition"

"전치사로 문장을 끝내지 마세요"

There's an easy solution : don't be friends

쉬운 해결책이 있습니다.

with this person anymore!

더 이상 이 사람과 친구가 되지 마세요!

Now, of course you could say :

이제 물론 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

AND 'FOR' HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAITING?

AND 'FOR' HOW HOW LONG HAVE BEEN YOU BEEN YOU?

That's fine! But it sounds a bit formal, and in casual conversation,

괜찮아! 하지만 약간 형식적으로 들리고 일상적인 대화에서는

sounds a bit out of place.

약간 어울리지 않게 들립니다.

Guess who we have to blame for this rule?

Well this rule comes from Latin grammar,

이 규칙은 라틴어 문법에서 유래했으며

and in Latin-ish languages like French, Spanish, and Italian

the rule still follows, and makes sense.

여전히 규칙을 따르고 의미가 있습니다.

but, in English it just... sounds a bit weird

if you follow this rule to the letter.

The main reason : phrasal verbs.

Look at this phrasal verb sentence :

WHO DO YOU GET ON WITH?

WHO DO YOU GET ON WITH?

Would you really say "ON WITH WHOM DO YOU GET"?

정말로 "ON WITH WHOM DO YOU GET"이라고 말하시겠습니까?

No! That sounds ridiculous!

아니요! 우스꽝스럽게 들린다!

Even Winston Churchill, yeah, this guy, even he didn't like this rule.

심지어 윈스턴 처칠도, 예, 이 사람도 이 규칙을 좋아하지 않았습니다.

Someone criticised him for ending a sentence with a preposition,

어떤 사람이 전치사로 문장을 끝내는 것에 대해 그를 비난했고,

to which he replied :

그는

"That's the sort of thing up with which I will not put!"

"그건 내가 넣지 않을 종류의 것입니다! "라고 대답했습니다.

He was so cool!

However, some of the things that Winston Churchill will supposed to have said

were actually made up.

up, were made some of the things, Winston... Churchill... said...

See what I mean? Today's English doesn't really fit.

So... wait? Should we always end a sentence with a preposition then?

That's what you're telling me?

Well, no! It sounds like a better constructed sentence

if you follow that rule,

if that sentence doesn't end in a phrasal verb.

해당 문장이 구동사로 끝나지 않으면 더 잘 구성된 문장처럼 들립니다 .
