So that question that Tom just asked me "If you were an animal, what would you be?"

자 그래서, 탐이 방금 저에게 물어본 질문이죠, "네가 만약에 동물이라면, 무슨 동물일까?"

That situation is real? or imaginary?

저 상황은 실제인가요 아니면 가상의 상황인가요?

Of course it's imaginary!

당연히 가상적인 거죠!

and for this, for Imaginary situations

We use the 2nd conditional

우리는 2nd conditional(가정법 과거)를 사용합니다.

Now what's the form of the 2nd conditional?

자 그러면, 가정법과거의 형식은 어떻게 되나요?

So just remember: This is for Imaginary situations

그러니 간단히 기억하세요! 이건 가상의 상황을 위한 것입니다.

look at the form again

다시 한번 형태를 봅시다.

It has a past verb with "if"

if절에는 동사의 과거형이 있습니다.

But it doesn't mean the situation is in the past

하지만 이것은 과거의 상황을 의미하는 것이 아니에요.

The Situation's now or in the future, but imaginary

이 상황은 현재나 혹은 미래지만, 상상의 상황이죠.

So, you see "if" with a past verb, it just means an imaginary situation

그래서, 당신이 과거동사가 있는 if를 본다면, 이건 간단하게 가상의 상황을 의미합니다.

Happening now or in the future

현재나 미래에 일어날 수 있고요.

So let's imagine something different

자 그러면 한번 다른 것도 상상해봅시다.

This place is pretty boring, there's nothing really happening

이 장소가 좀 지루하네요, 뭐 별다른 일이 일어나는 것이 없어요.

만약 당신이 말한다면,

in a place

이 자리에,

That is called the subjunctive mood

가정법이라고 부르는 데요,

and the difference is formality

차이점은 격식성입니다.

If you use the subjunctive mood it's more formal, basically

만약 당신이 가정법을 사용한다면, 기본적으로 좀 더 공적인 의미가 되죠.

however if you just say "if I was...", "if he she it was..."

하지만 만약 당신이 그냥 "if I WAS...," "if he she it WAS" 로 말한다면

It's more common, and that's what you hear more often

이건 좀 더 비격식적인 평범한 형태인거죠, 그리고 당신이 더 자주 듣게될 형태고요.

Basically, in a test use subjunctive mood, it's more correct

단순하게는, 시험에서는 가정법모드(were)를 사용하세요. 그것이 더 정확합니다.

In real life

실생활에서는

its more common that we use "If I was..." "if he/she/it was..."

was를 쓰는 것이 더 일상적입니다.
