Love idioms - English vocabulary (Part 2)

Love continues, as we do 5 more love and relationships idioms!

Starting with this one :

When all you can think about is that one other person,

and everytime you think about them, it's like :

we can say this :

The person has "a crush on" or has "a thing for" the other person.

In this case, she has a crush on him,

she has a thing for him.

Now, for Number 2 :

"To punch above your weight" :

it's when one person in the relationship is

significantly less attractive than the other one.

It doesn't necessarily means they're ugly, they could just be

quite normal-looking

and their partner is extremely attractive.

So, in this case, maybe,

his friend will say this :

Do you see the significance of "punching above your weight"?

Think of boxing :

you know they have different weight classes of boxing

Well, imagine that you're very small,

and you're fighting someone of a bigger weight than you.

It comes from that.

You're punching above your weight, in other words :

"Wow, she's much better than you.. in the looks department"

Number 3 :

Next one : if one of the people in the relationship has all of the control,

basically, she has his balls like "that",

if she wants to say :

and his reaction is this :

"Yes of course, honey, I'll do everything for you!"

Again : her hand, his balls...

Or maybe the other person asks this question,

and the response is this :

If that's the reaction to this response,

We say "he is under the thumb".

Whatever she wants him to do, he'll do it.

He wants to go out? "No".

"Ok, it's fine!"

This reaction, we'd definitely say he's under the thumb.

Number 4 :

When you see a couple going :

When we see this kind of behaviour,

we can call it :

But we could also say :

"To be loved up with" or "to be smitten with" someone :

so we could say :

"they are loved up",

ot "they are smitten"

"with eachother" is an option but not necessary.

The fifth and final idiom :

Again, everyone knows a couple like this :

January, they hate each other,

February, they live each other,

March, they wanna kill each other,

and April, they wanna have babies together.

In this situation, we can say the relationship is :

"On again, off again", or it's "on and off".

An example sentence could be :

"All year, they have been on and off",

or "they've been on and off for four months", for example.
