Learn English Through Stories - An English Comprehension Lesson

In today's English lesson,

오늘 영어 수업에서

I'm going to tell you two stories.

저는 두 가지 이야기를 들려드릴 것입니다.

One of the stories will be true.

이야기 중 하나는 사실일 것입니다.

The other story will be a lie

다른 이야기는 거짓말이 될 것이고

and you'll need to try and figure out which one is which.

어느 것이 어느 것인지 알아내야 합니다.

I like English lessons like this

because as an English learner,

영어 학습자로서 결정을 내리기 위해

you really need to understand each story

각 이야기를 정말로 이해해야 하기 때문에 이런 영어 수업을 좋아합니다

in order to make a decision.

So I'll tell you two stories, two stories about me.

그래서 두 가지 이야기, 저에 대한 두 가지 이야기를 들려드리겠습니다.

One will be true, one will be a lie.

하나는 참일 것이고 하나는 거짓일 것입니다.

Are you ready?

(bright upbeat music)

Story number one.

첫 번째 이야기.

Let's call this story The Kite.

이 이야기를 The Kite라고 부르자.

Once when I was a kid,

내가 어렸을 때,

my mom's uncle visited us from the Netherlands.

엄마의 삼촌이 네덜란드에서 우리를 방문했습니다.

He flew over on a plane

그는 비행기를 타고

and he came to visit us here on the farm,

여기 농장에 있는 우리를 방문했고

and he brought gifts.

선물을 가져왔습니다.

He brought gifts for me and my brothers and sisters.

그는 저와 제 형제자매들을 위해 선물을 가져왔습니다 .

We were very, very excited.

우리는 매우 흥분했습니다.

The gift that I received was a kite,

제가 받은 선물은 연,

a really cool, orange kite.

정말 멋진 주황색 연이었습니다.

It was really big.

It came in a box

상자에 들어있었는데

and I remember I had to put it together.

같이 넣어야 했던 기억이 납니다.

I had two sticks and I had to attach

all of the strings and the fabric.

끈과 천을 모두 붙여야 했다.

And when I was all done,

the kite was ready to test out

but it wasn't windy on the day I got the kite,

so I couldn't go outside with my mom's uncle and try it out.

But I do remember putting it all together.

It was a really nice-looking kite.

정말 멋져 보이는 연이었습니다.

The next day, my mom's uncle came back

for tea or coffee or something,

and it was a windy day,

바람이 많이 부는 날이라

so we went outside and we spent some time.

밖에 나가서 시간을 좀 보냈다.

He taught me how to fly the kite.

그는 나에게 연 날리는 법을 가르쳐 주었다.

I would hold the string and he would go

내가 줄을 잡고 그가 가서

and throw the kite in the air and I would run,

연을 공중에 던지면 나는 뛰었고

and eventually the kite was flying.

결국 연은 날고 있었다.

It was super fun.

정말 재미있었어요.

So I let the kite go really high in the air

그래서 연을 하늘 높이 띄웠

and eventually the string broke,

더니 결국 줄이

and the kite flew away and landed down by the river.

끊어져 연이 날아가 강가에 떨어졌습니다.

I ran down really quickly and I found the kite.

정말 빨리 달려가서 연을 찾았어요.

Luckily, it wasn't broken.

다행히 깨지지는 않았습니다. 깨지지 않아서

I was very, very happy that it wasn't broken.

정말 다행이었어요 .

Then, my mom's uncle and I

그리고 엄마의 삼촌과 나는

went with my dad to the hardware store

아빠와 함께 철물점에 가서

and we bought really strong fishing line.

아주 튼튼한 낚싯줄을 샀습니다.

Fishing line is something you use with a fishing rod

낚싯줄은 낚싯대와 함께 사용하는 것으로

and it's very thin but it's very strong.

매우 가늘지만 매우 강합니다.

When we came back home,

우리는 집에 돌아와 연줄 대신

we attached the fishing line to the kite

낚싯줄을 연에 달았습니다

instead of the string that came with it.

And then, we tried flying the kite again

그런 다음 다시 연 날리기를 시도했고

and it worked way better.

훨씬 더 잘 작동했습니다.

I was super happy.

나는 매우 행복했다.

It was a fun experience.

I flew the kite quite a bit when I was a kid,

lots of fun.

I don't know if you've ever had a kite.

Anyways, that's story one, The Kite.

Story number two, let's call this one Basketball.

When I was a kid,

I really wanted to be on the basketball team at school

but I wasn't a very good basketball player.

A lot of my friends lived in town

or they lived in the city

and they could practice basketball all the time

but I lived out here on the farm.

There are no really good spots to bounce a basketball

and I didn't have a basketball net

but I really, really, really wanted to play basketball.

So my parents got me a basketball

and I would practice in the barn.

And eventually, they got me a basketball net.

They bought me a basketball net

and we mounted it on the wall of the barn.

Many, many evenings I would practice

shooting the basketball, bouncing the basketball.

We also call it dribbling by the way.

I would practice a lot.

I would try and get my brothers and sisters

but none of them wanted to play basketball with me.

So I just practiced by myself and I got better.

I got better and better,

and I knew that basketball tryouts

were coming up in a few months,

so I practiced almost every night of the week.

I became really good at dribbling.

I became really good at shooting the basketball

I went, I signed up on a piece of paper at school

that I wanted to try out.

I went to the basketball tryouts

and I showed off all of my basketball skills

농구 실력을 뽐냈다

as best as I could.

And then I waited

because after, I think there were two tryouts,

after two tryouts,

the coach was going to post the list of who made the team.

So I was very nervous.

On that day,

I remember going to school

학교에 갔던 기억이 나서

and I looked at the list

명단을 보니

and my name was not on the list.

I was heartbroken.

나는 상심했다.

I was very, very sad.

I had spent all this time learning to play basketball

나는 이 모든 시간을 농구를 배우는 데 보냈고

and I didn't make the team.

So that was story number two, Basketball.

Do you think it's true

or do you think it's a lie?

Okay, so you've heard both stories

좋아요, 두 가지 이야기를 모두 들었으니

and now you need to decide which one you think is true

이제 어느 것이 진실이라고 생각

and which one you think is a lie.

하고 어떤 것이 거짓말이라고 생각하는지 결정해야 합니다.

If you need to,

you can go back and listen to each story again.

돌아가서 각 이야기를 다시 들을 수 있습니다.

Maybe you'll hear a few hints in one of the stories

아마도 당신은

that make you think it's either true or that it is a lie.

I'll let you think about it for a few seconds here.

And then, I'll tell you which one is which,

The story about the kite is true.

I know I probably told it in a way where you believed it

I do remember a time when my mom's uncle
