A Few Ways To Say THANK YOU In English

So, this package came the other day.

I wasn't expecting this yet.

I'm not sure if you know what this is.

Should I open it now?

Or should I open it at the end of the video?

Maybe I'll open it now.

Yeah, the other day, my phone,

all of a sudden I got a message,

and it said your package has arrived.

And I was a little bit shocked.

So let's open this up, see what it is.

I think some of you already know,

if you looked at the thumbnail.

Inside, we have a letter.

I'm not gonna read the whole letter,

but it basically says,

if you took one step for each subscriber you have,

do you know how far that would get you?

For starters,

of over 13 times around the perimeter of Beijing,

or 14 times around Paris, or 15 times around New York.

That's because you now have over 1 million subscribers.

So again, I'm not gonna read the whole thing,

but I thought that was a really cool first paragraph.

This is, of course, a gold play button.

Let me get this out of the box.

It's much bigger than the silver one.

It's much heavier as well.

So let me just let you have a little bit of a look here.

Take the plastic off the bottom, and hold this up.

Maybe you can see yourself in the reflection.

I'm just joking about that,

but I'm just very, very excited to get this.

I'm very, very happy, and I'm very, very thankful.

I'm thankful, not because I feel like I've worked hard,

and I deserve this.

I'm thankful because all of you

clicked the subscribe button.

There's kind of this funny balance, right?

Like I can make really good stuff, and put it on YouTube.

But if people don't click subscribe,

you don't end up getting

a really, really cool plaque like this.

So this is for me, but it's a also for all of you.

In my mind and in my heart,

I do wanna say thank you for clicking that subscribe button

at some point in your life.

And so let's shift gears a little bit here.

Let's do a little lesson about how to say thanks in English.

I did this way back when I got my silver play button.

This is kind of the same lesson,

but stick around if you wanna learn,

or review how to say thanks in English.

The first way we say thanks

is just the traditional thank you.

Maybe you go somewhere,

and someone throws a party for you, and it's your birthday.

You go to a relative's house, and you have a birthday party.

And at the end, you say to your sister, or mom, or brother,

whoever organized the party, you say thank you.

The formal, traditional, normal, easy way to say thank you.

But we also have like an informal way to say thank you.

And that's just saying thanks.

So imagine you want to go on a trip,

and you don't like driving,

and you're going on the trip with a friend,

and your friend says I'll drive.

You could respond with the quick informal way

of saying thank you, and just say thanks, that's great,

because I don't like driving.

We also have ways to kind of be quite formal,

or to emphasize how much we are thankful.

You might use the phrase thanks a lot.

Let's think about maybe you're moving,

and a friend helps you move.

So you're moving from one apartment to another,

or one house to another,

and a friend helps you all day.

At the end of the day, you would probably say thanks a lot.

So it's more than just a thank you.

It's more than just saying thanks.

You're emphasizing that you're really,

really, really thankful, so thanks a lot.

You might even say this at the end.

You might say I owe you one.

When you say thanks a lot, I owe you one,

it means someone has done something for you,

and you are so thankful,

you feel like you need to repay them someday.

So you say, I owe you one.

And then of course, if you really want to emphasize it,

you can say thank you so much,

or thank you very much.

This is what I would say to you.

Thank you so much.

You even kind of change how you say it.

You don't say that phrase quickly.

You don't say thank you so much.

You say thank you so much.

I would emphasize the word so,

so thank you so much for clicking that subscribe button.

That's just awesome of you.

And another phrase, just one last one.

Sometimes we'll say something like,

I can't thank you enough.

So when I do a video like this, when I thank you,

and when I'm happy about getting an award,

often, people want to voice their appreciation of me.

There's a couple ways that you can do this.

You could say congratulations,

because I got an award,

and maybe you're proud of me, or you're happy for me.

So you might say congratulations, Bob.

You might say something like,

way to go, or awesome job, or nice work.

All of those things would be ways to kind of praise me.

This seems kind of weird right now.

I'm teaching you how to give me praise,

or how to give me compliments.

But anyways, there's no requirement

that you give me a compliment, or praise me.

But anyways, that would be another way to do it.

You could say I'm so happy for you.

Often, when people achieve something in life,

people will say, oh, that's great.

Congratulations, way to go, I'm so happy for you.

And then lastly, you might say,

that's awesome, or that's amazing.

Those are two very informal quick phrases we use

when someone does something,

and we just want to tell them

we think they did a great job.

We would say that's amazing Bob, or that's awesome, Bob.

Again, I'm laughing,

because I'm teaching you how to leave comments

that will make me feel better about myself.

That was not the point of this video.

The point of this video to go all the way back

to the beginning is to simply, once again, say thank you.

Thank you so much for clicking that subscribe button.

Let's have a look at this one more time.

I will hang this somewhere where you can see it.

Maybe I'll put it beside the silver one.

I just never thought this would ever happen.

I'm actually still in shock.

When the plaque came in the mail,

when the delivery truck came, I mean,

I still can hardly believe it.

It's easy to imagine a stadium full of 60 or 70,000 people,

but it's hard to imagine 1 million people

all click that little red button.
