Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

- The band U2 has a song called "Beautiful Day"

and one of the lines in the song goes like this:

"It's a beautiful day, don't let it get away."

And I think it's a great sentiment.

I really, really like that line in that song.

I think it's a great way to start each day.

And it's also a great way to think

about finishing off this year and starting the new year.

By the way, this is kind of my Christmas message video

and my Happy New Year's video all in one.

You'll probably be watching this after Christmas though

and before New Year's,

but it'll be somewhere in between the two,

so I think it still has some value.

So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

and please think about that sentiment.

"It's a beautiful day.

Don't let it get away."

What this means is

that you should make sure every day,

you live the day to its fullest.

You do the things that bring you joy.

You do the things that bring other people joy as well.

And I do want to challenge you to do three things

as you head into the new year.

Three things that aren't about you,

but they're about other people.

And I think they're important.

Number one is make sure you say something kind

to someone today.

Make sure you try to say kind things

to people as much as you can.

This is not easy.

I'm not good at this.

I struggle every day to be as kind as I can be.

You might think I'm super kind

because you only see the really kind Bob here on YouTube.

But every day I try to say kind things to people.

And then the second thing would be this.

Try to help someone today.

This is something that is actually easier for me.

Sometimes it's harder to say kind things,

and it's easier to just do things

that are helpful to people.

Making these YouTube videos count.

They count as one of the things I do to try and help people.

I love making these videos.

I like helping you.

But if you could challenge yourself,

try to find a way in the new year to just help someone.

In some small way, help someone.

It will make their day.

And then the third thing, which is maybe trickier,

maybe a little harder,

is to try and make someone smile

or try and make someone laugh each day.

Some days I'm really good at this.

Some days just me laughing

makes other people smile and laugh.

But, of course, again, I'm human.

There's other days where I try

to make people smile or laugh and it doesn't always work.

And there's days where I don't even try to do it.

But I think it is a great goal every day

to try and think about

how will I make some of the people around me smile

or laugh a little bit?

So those are the three challenges.

Number one, try to say kind things to people.

Number two, try to help people.

And number three, try to make someone smile.

And if you're really good at it,

try and get people to laugh.

I think you'll find it just makes your day better as well.
