An English Story at Three Speeds

Every once in a while, one of you will ask me

to make an English lesson where I talk at my normal speed.

As you know, in these lessons

I talk a little bit more slowly

and I try to pronounce every word clearly

so that you can understand, and I thought,

"You know what?

It would be a good idea to do that."

So I've designed an English lesson

where I'm going to read a story to you,

a story that I wrote, it's a really short story.

I'm going to read a story to you three times

at three different speeds.

I think it'll be fun.

(upbeat music)

So here's how this will work.

I have written three versions of the story.

It's a really short story, by the way,

it's only about a minute long.

The first version of the story,

I will read and I will pronounce every word clearly,

and there are no contractions and no reductions.

The second version of the story,

I will read at a little bit of a faster pace

and it will include contractions.

And the third version of the story,

I'll read at my normal speed,

the speed I would use if I was talking to someone at work.

So, here we go. Are you ready?

Let's get started with the first version of the story.

(bright music)

"Let me tell you about a young man named Paul.

He did not like going to the mall.

When his mom would say, 'Time to go,'

he would say, 'I am just going to stay home,'

and this would drive his mom up the wall,

because she would leave in the car

and she would not get far

before Paul would text her and ask,

'Could you buy me some new pants

and a couple of new house plants?

Oh, and I am kind of hungry.

Could you get me something to eat?'

She would then stop the car

and text a reply, saying,

'You should have told me that before I left.

I am going to come back home to get you.

I will be home in a couple of minutes.

Please be ready to go.'"

(bright music)

"Let me tell you about a young man named Paul.

He didn't like going to the mall.

When his mom would say, 'Time to go,'

he'd say, 'I'm going to stay home,'

and this would drive his mom up the wall,

because she'd leave in the car and she wouldn't get far

before Paul would text her and ask,

'Could you buy me some new pants

and a couple of new house plants?

Oh, and I'm kind of hungry,

could you get me something to eat?'

She'd then stop the car and text a reply, saying,

'You should've told me that before I left.

I'm going to come back to get you.

I'll be home in a couple of minutes.

Please be ready to go.'"

Lemme tell ya ‘bout a young man named Paul.

He didn’t like goin’ to the mall.

When his mom ‘ould say, “Time to go!”

He’d say, “I’m gonna stay home!”

And this ‘ould drive ‘is mom up the wall.

cause she’d leave in the car. and she wouldn’t get far,

before Paul ‘ould text ‘er and ask,

“Couldja buy me some new pants

and a couple ‘a new houseplants.

Oh, and I’m kinda hungry,

couldja get me some‘in to eat?”

She’d then stop the car and text a reply.

Saying, “You shoulda tol’ me that before I left.

I'm gonna come back to get you.

I’ll be home in a couple’a minutes.

Please be ready to go.'"

And now, just for fun, I'll read the fast version

as fast as I possibly can.

Here we go. "Lemme tell ya ‘bout a young man named Paul.

Wow, that was, that was actually quite hard to do.

Should I read the slow version as slow as possible?

Maybe I'll do that as well.

if you are using the subtitles or the transcript,

at the fastest speed,

when I tell the story at the fastest speed,

the spellings are not correct.

I spell the words the way I think they would sound

if I had to spell them, so be careful with that.

For the slow version and the medium version,

everything is correct.
