Conversation Skills: Expressing Surprise in English 😯🤭

Surprise is generally a strong emotion, and we often

It can be a good or bad surprise.

You can use a rise-fall intonation pattern when you say these expressions:

다음 표현을 말할 때 상승-하강 억양 패턴을 사용할 수 있습니다.

No way!

안돼!

"No way" is like saying, "That can't be possible. There's no way that is true." No way!

"안돼"는 "그건 불가능해. 그게 사실일 리가 없어."라고 말하는 것과 같습니다. 안 돼요!

You've got to be kidding me.

당신은 나에게 농담이있어.

If you're kidding, you're joking.

농담이라면 농담입니다.

You're kidding. You've got to be kidding me.

Another expression of surprise that's a little less common, but still in use is "Get out of here!"

You can also hear strong rising intonation when someone is very surprised,

particularly with a yes/no question, as in...

There's a third possible intonation pattern when we feel very surprised.

It's more like disbelief. We can use a strong slow fall, as in...

Wow.

You can use the strong slow fall when you say a variation of "wow" - Woah.

"wow" - Woah의 변형이라고 말할 때 강한 느린 낙하를 사용할 수 있습니다.

The strong slow fall a natural pattern when you say a moderate curse like, "Dang."

"땡"과 같은 적당한 욕을 말할 때 강하고 느리게 떨어지는 자연스러운 패턴입니다.

I presented that word in other

So you could also say something like, "Good Lord."

Try that strong slow fall with the previous expressions: No way.

You've got to be kidding me.

This intonation pattern sounds like disbelief mixed with displeasure.

You'll definitely hear a negative tone when someone says "please"

It sounds like this.

Puh-leez.

Meaning, "Oh, please don't tell me that's the situation. Please don't say that's true." Puh-leez.

I'll give you a final expression of surprise. "I thought I'd seen everything."

마지막으로 놀라움을 표현하겠습니다. "다 본 줄 알았는데."

This is ideal for a situation that you could never have imagined, something bizarre.

이것은 당신이 상상할 수 없었던 기괴한 상황에 이상적입니다.

You can combine it with other expressions of surprise, for example:

Wow! And I thought I'd seen everything.

That is crazy! I thought I'd seen everything.

Here's a quick look again at the expressions we studied in this lesson.
