Day 8 - Reducing THAT, THAN, THEM - Understanding Fast Speech in English

I know that it can be a challenge when people talk really fast.

THAN and THAT are two more function words.

THAN과 THAT가 있는 영어는 기능어가 두 개 더 있습니다.

They're small words and don't carry a lot of content,

그것들은 작은 단어이고 많은 내용을 담고 있지 않기

so we usually reduce those vowel sounds to a weaker sound.

때문에 일반적으로 이러한 모음 소리를 더 약한 소리로 줄입니다.

A schwa.

슈와.

The schwa sound is that relaxed "uh" /ə/.

슈와 소리는 편안한 "어" /ə/입니다.

I asked you if listening is sometimes harder than speaking.

듣는 것이 말하는 것보다 어려울 때가 있느냐고 물었습니다.

"harder than speaking"

"harder than speaking"

Instead of THAN...in fast speech I can say /ðən/.

THAN 대신...빠른 말로 /ðən/이라고 말할 수 있습니다.

THAT can also be reduced when it's fast an unstressed.

THAT는 빠르거나 스트레스를 받지 않을 때도 줄일 수 있습니다.

I said, "I know that it can be a challenge."

"도전이 될 수 있다는 것을 압니다."

Just like THAN became /ðən/,

THAN이 /ðən/이 된 것처럼

THAT can sound like /ðət/.

THAT는 /ðət/처럼 들릴 수 있습니다.

Note the word THAT could be stressed, so it's not always reduced.

THAT라는 단어는 강조될 수 있으므로 항상 줄어드는 것은 아닙니다.

For example, I could suggest, "Let's buy that one, not this one. That one."

예를 들어 "이거 말고 저거 사자. 저거"라고 제안할 수 있다.

And when it's stressed, we use that full short A sound.

그리고 그것이 강조될 때, 우리는 전체 짧은 A 소리를 사용합니다.

/æ/ That one.

/æ/ 저것.

Pronouns are also function words.

대명사도 기능어입니다.

THEM is an example of a pronoun.

THEM은 대명사의 예입니다.

THEM in fast speech could sound more like /ðəm/.

빠른 말의 THEM은 /ðəm/처럼 들릴 수 있습니다.

I know them.

나는 그들을 안다.

We're reducing the vowel sounds again to a weaker schwa.

우리는 모음 소리를 더 약한 슈와로 다시 줄이고 있습니다.

Not /ðɛm/.../ðəm/. I know them.

/ðɛm/.../ðəm/이 아닙니다. 나는 그들을 안다.

Here are some examples I can read for you.

다음은 제가 읽을 수 있는 몇 가지 예입니다.

But first let me ask you...

I'll reduce these words in yellow.

이 단어들을 노란색으로 줄이겠습니다.

Listen.

듣다.

Note when we use THAT as a demonstrative,

THAT를 형용사 또는 대명사를 의미하는 지시어로 사용할 때

meaning as an adjective or pronoun,

it’s usually stressed.

일반적으로 강조됩니다.

Let me make one more note.

한 가지 더 메모하겠습니다.

There’s another way THEM can change in fast speech.

그들이 빠른 연설에서 변할 수 있는 또 다른 방법이 있습니다.

Not only can we reduce the vowel to a schwa,

모음을 슈와로 줄일 수 있을 뿐만 아니라

we might also drop the TH altogether.

TH를 완전히 삭제할 수도 있습니다.

So instead of…

그래서 대신에...

You may hear people say,

사람들이

“Where do you want to put’em?”

"어디에 넣을까요?"라고 말하는 것을 들을 수 있습니다.

Listen closely.

자세히 들어보세요.

I'll say a sentence.

나는 한 문장을 말할 것이다.

You try to understand.

당신은 이해하려고 노력합니다.
