Terms of Endearment - U.S. Culture & English Vocabulary

On February 14, we celebrate Valentine's Day.

In honor of this holiday, I thought we'd have a lesson

on terms of endearment.

Those are words like "honey"..."baby"...

"꿀"..."아기"... 같은 단어들이죠.

They're words of affection,

애정의 단어

and we use them to address the people we're closest to:

이고 우리는 가장 가까운 사람들을 지칭할 때 사용합니다.

Every language has its terms of endearment.

모든 언어에는 애정 표현이 있습니다.

Some are widely used,

일부는 널리 사용되며

and others are a little unusual

다른 일부는

because they're made up.

구성되어 있기 때문에 조금 특이합니다.

They're used just between two people.

두 사람 사이에서만 사용됩니다.

We have a lot of terms of endearment in English.

우리는 영어로 애정의 용어를 많이 가지고 있습니다.

- So many that I can't possibly tell you all of them.

But I do plan to share many of them,

and I have some notes to help me remember.

We'll start with a very common one:

It can be written two different ways

We use "honey" with adults and children.

A short form? - Hun' (hon').

Like, "Hon', do yo have a second?"

"여보, 잠시 시간 있으세요?"

Variations? - There are a lot of them.

변형? - 많이 있습니다.

Some common ones are:

Sometimes, especially in the case of honey,

you hear a term of endearment

in a situation where people are not close,

For example, a friendly waitress might say,

You need to be careful.

My advice is not to use terms of endearment

with people you are not familiar with or close to.

Because then it could be taken as a form of disrespect.

All right. Next one. "Baby."

"Hey, baby. What's wrong?"

We can use it with adults or children.

Short form: babe.

Variations:

A very common term of endearment: sweetheart.

For adults and for children.

"Good morning, sweetheart."

"Sweetheart, it's time for breakfast."

Variations:

Again, like "honey," there are a lot of variations.

"Sweet pea" - usually for children.

"Sweet lips" - for adults.

"Love" - "Hi, my love."

You might hear:

"Darling."

You'll hear a combination:

In some accents, in some situations - songs, for example -

you'll hear people drop the "g."

And instead of "darling," you'll hear something like "darlin'."

You see this word also in messages and letters,

As a form of address, as a greeting in a letter,

It's actually just a formal, polite way

But variations for terms of endearment would be:

You can also hear "dearie,"

"dearie"도 들을 수 있고

and that could be spelled different ways,

but when I think of "dearie," I think of

some elderly...kind, elderly woman

who is maybe thanking a young person for helping her

"Oh, dearie. Thank you so much."

So not as common.

"Cutie patootie" - definitely for children.

"Sunshine." This is one that I use.

Okay. This one is probably more so for a romantic relationship.

"Snookums." - My snookums.

We have some silly sounding terms of endearment.

A similar one: "pookie."

It could be for kids, but I usually think of that in a love relationship.

Another silly word, "boo."

We have many terms of endearment based on the names of animals.

Usually cute little ones, like:

Although bears are big, we might say:

For a girl, you might call her "princess."

We have terms of endearment based on good looks.

We might use this for our children, for example.

"Come here, gorgeous."

"이리 와, 멋져."

"Hey, beautiful."

I sometimes say, "Where's my handsome boy?"

He's getting older, so I have to be careful

I can't be too cute calling my nine-year-old a "cutie patootie"

Also for kids, "munchkin."

We have other terms of endearment that end with "-kin."

"-친족"으로 끝나는 다른 애정 표현이 있습니다.

It sounds cute: munchkin, pumpkin...

귀엽게 들립니다: 먼치킨, 호박...

Those are the ones I can recall right now.

바로 지금 기억나는 것들입니다.

Also, just like we have terms of endearment based on cute little animals,

또한 귀여운 작은 동물을 기반으로 한 애정 용어가 있는 것처럼

we have terms of endearment based on sweet things to eat, like:

Gosh, there are so many. I think I'll have to end there.

But now you get a sense of how many terms of endearment are possible.

Listen out for them.

You'll hear them in films, in TV shows, in songs...

Maybe you'll hear them said to you.

We usually keep the first two lines

So you get the idea of how creative you can be.
