When I hear these bells jingle,

종소리를 들으면

I think of two things.

두 가지가 생각납니다.

I think of winter fun,

저는 겨울의 즐거움,

all the winter fun surrounding our December holidays.

12월 연휴를 둘러싼 모든 겨울의 즐거움을 생각합니다.

I think of Christmas and Santa Claus,

크리스마스와 산타 클로스,

sleigh rides and sleigh bells.

썰매 타기, 썰매 종소리가 생각납니다.

And I think of my grandmother.

그리고 할머니를 생각합니다.

My grandmother was very proud

할머니는 자신의 폴란드 유산을 매우 자랑스러워하셨고

of her Polish heritage,

and she loved polkas.

폴카를 좋아하셨습니다.

When she would go to polka parties,

그녀는 폴카 파티에 갈 때

she sometimes took these bells

가끔 이 종을 들고

and she would jingle the bells

while she listened to the music.

음악을 들으며 종을 쳤습니다.

Did you know that "jingle" could be a noun or a verb?

"징글"이 명사일 수도 있고 동사일 수도 있다는 사실을 알고 계셨나요?

I can jingle the bells.

종을 울릴 수 있습니다.

I can make that sound.

나는 그 소리를 낼 수 있다.

What do you hear?

뭐가 들렸어?

The jingle of bells.

종소리.

But "jingle" as a noun

그러나 명사로서의 "징글"에는

has another meaning.

또 다른 의미가 있습니다.

It has nothing to do with bells.

종과는 아무 관련이 없습니다.

If you know anything about marketing,

마케팅에 대해 아는 것이 있다면

then you know that in advertising

광고에서

they use jingles,

징글을 사용하고

they use short songs

짧은 노래를 사용하여

to help us remember a certain product.

특정 제품을 기억할 수 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

"Jingle" is a good example of a homonym.

"Jingle"은 동음이의어의 좋은 예입니다.

The words look the same,

단어는 모양도 같고

sound the same

소리도 같지만

but they have different meanings.

의미가 다릅니다.

In this lesson, I'd like to talk about

이번 수업에서는

words like "jingle."

"징글"과 같은 단어에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다.

We're going to talk about homonyms, homographs, and homophones.

우리는 동음이의어, 동음이의어, 동음이의어에 대해 이야기할 것입니다.

You already know what a homonym is.

당신은 이미 동음이의어가 무엇인지 알고 있습니다.

I gave you the example "jingle."

"징글"이라는 예를 들었습니다.

Here's another one.

여기 또 하나 있습니다.

"Star." S-T-A-R.

"별." 별.

Do you think of this?

당신은 이것을 생각합니까? 별

The shape of a star.

모양입니다.

"Star" can also refer to what we see in the night sky.

"별"은 우리가 밤하늘에서 보는 것을 가리킬 수도 있습니다.

And "star" can also be a celebrity.

그리고 '스타'도 연예인이 될 수 있다.

Like a film star, a sports star, or a radio star.

영화배우, 스포츠 스타, 라디오 스타처럼요. 동음

Homonyms then look the same, sound the same,

이의어는 모양도 같고 소리도 같지만

but have different meanings.

의미가 다릅니다.

What about "homophone"?

"동음이의어"는 어떻습니까?

Homophone.

이형 동음 이의어.

"Phone" has to do with sound.

"전화"는 소리와 관련이 있습니다.

So words sound the same,

따라서 단어는 소리는 같지만

but they have different meanings,

의미가 다르고

and they're written differently.

다르게 쓰여집니다.

For example...

예를 들면...

Which word am I referring to?

내가 말하는 단어는?

I

나는

Like myself?

나 자신을 좋아한다?

The first person, singular pronoun.

1인칭, 단수 대명사.

Eye.

눈.

Or...what I see with?

아니면... 내가 무엇으로 보는가?

E-Y-E

E-Y-E

So we have homonyms, homophones, and homographs.

동음이의어, 동음이의어, 동형이의어가 있습니다.

If homophones are wrods that sound the same,

동음이의어가 소리가 같고 발음이 같은 단어라면 동음

have the same pronunciation,

can you guess what homographs are?

이의어가 무엇인지 짐작할 수 있나요?

"Graph" has to do with writing.

"그래프"는 쓰기와 관련이 있습니다.

So homographs are written the same way.

따라서 동형이의어는 같은 방식으로 작성됩니다.

They share the same spelling,

그들은 같은 철자를 공유

but not necessarily the same pronunciation.

하지만 반드시 같은 발음은 아닙니다.

Here's an example.

여기에 예가 있습니다.

Can you see what I made?

내가 만든 거 보이니?

This is a holiday ribbon, and I tied a bow.

이것은 명절 리본이고 활을 묶었습니다.

Bow.

절하다.

B-O-W.

절하다.

B-O-W...can I only say (it one way)?

B-O-W...(한 방향으로)만 말할 수 있나요?

I can also say...

나는 또한 말할 수 있다...

"bow"...how I bend from my waist.

"활"...내가 어떻게 허리를 구부리는지.

In certain countries, in certain contexts,

특정 국가, 특정 상황에서

people bow.

사람들은 절을 합니다.

Let's talk more about homonyms, homophones, and homographs.

동음이의어, 동음이의어 및 동형이의어에 대해 자세히 알아보겠습니다.

First, I'll give you practice with homophones.

먼저 동음이의어 연습을 할게요.

We'll use the holiday song "Jingle Bells."

명절 노래 "Jingle Bells"를 사용하겠습니다.

Every American knows this song,

모든 미국인은 이 노래를 알고

but usually we only know the first verse.

있지만 일반적으로 우리는 첫 번째 구절만 알고 있습니다.

We forget the other ones.

우리는 다른 것을 잊습니다.

I'll say the words,

제가 단어를 말할 테니

and you'll help me with the spelling, okay?

맞춤법을 도와주세요, 알았죠?

Let's start.

Which words do we need?

어떤 단어가 필요합니까?

This might be a little tricky.

이것은 약간 까다로울 수 있습니다.

"O'er" is a contraction.

"O'er"는 축약형입니다.

A short form for "over."

"over"의 줄임말.

And it's literary, like bookish...

그리고 그것은 책처럼 문학적입니다 ...

Now we start the chorus.

이제 우리는 합창을 시작합니다.

Which word?

어떤 단어?

Natasha, I have a question for you.

나타샤, 질문이 있습니다.

When we sing "Jingle Bells,"

what word do we say at the end?

When we say..."Jingle bells, jingle bells"

"Jingle all the way."

Yes! And how is that spelled?

Because if we say H-A-Y,

what are we talking about?

Yeah. Hay for horses.

Now we'll take the same song,
