"Ring Out, Wild Bells" by Tennyson - A Poem for the New Year

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,/  The flying cloud, the frosty light;/

The year is dying in the night; Ring  out, wild bells, and let him die.

"Frosty" is the adjective. "Frost" is the noun.  

"서리"는 형용사입니다. "프로스트"는 명사입니다.

Frost is a thin layer of ice, so  anything frosty is cold and icy.

서리는 얇은 얼음층이므로 서리가 내린 것은 차갑고 차갑습니다.

It's interesting that the poet  treats the year like a person.  

시인이 연도를 사람처럼 다룬다는 점이 흥미롭습니다.

This is called personification. "The year  is dying let him die," says the poet.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,/  Ring, happy bells, across the snow:/The

year is going, let him go;/ Ring  out the false, ring in the true.

These ideas are familiar to us. A new year is a  beginning. We want to be optimistic and believe

we can leave old things that we no longer need  behind. We could leave anything negative behind.

And a bell can be used to signal an alarm,  but here a bell rings in celebration.

"Grief" is sadness. Grief can sap our strength;

"Redress" is like compensation. You make up  for something bad by offering something good.

In short, we want to leave behind all the bad

and hope that a lot of good  things happen for everyone.

There's also mention of people that we see  no more. They're gone. I believe that means

that we're sad to have lost people  this year, but we need to carry on.

This almost sounds political, and maybe that  makes this poem all the more appropriate for 2020.

"Strife" is angry disagreement. "Noble"  means admirable. We can try to leave

behind the angry arguments and behave in a  way that's kinder and worthy of admiration.

Ring out the want, the care the sin,/  The faithless coldness of the times;/  

부족함, 근심 죄,/ 믿음 없는 냉정한 시대를 울려라./ 울려라

Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,/  But ring the fuller minstrel in.

"Faithless" is lack of belief, and "mournful"  is sad. A minstrel is a singer or some kind of  

. 음유시인은 가수 또는 일종의

musician, so sad songs need to be left behind, and  we can have better, fuller music in the new year.

음악가이기 때문에 슬픈 노래는 남겨두고 새해에는 더 좋고 풍성한 음악을 할 수 있습니다.

Ring out false pride in place and  blood,/ The civic slander and the  

장소와 피에 거짓된 자존심을 울려라 ,/ 시민 비방과

spite;/ Ring in the love of truth and  right,/ Ring in the common love of good.

악의를 울려라./ 진리와 정의에 대한 사랑을 울려라 ,/ 선에 대한 공동의 사랑을 울려라.

"Slander" is false talk, lies. I think  the poet means that we don't want lies

and hurtful talk at home or in our society. We  need more truth and more love in all places.

가정이나 사회에서 거짓말과 상처 주는 말을 원하지 않는다는 것을 의미한다고 생각합니다. 모든 곳에서 더 많은 진실과 사랑이 필요합니다.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,/  Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;/  

더러운 질병의 오래된 형태를 울려라,/ 좁아지는 황금의 정욕을 울려라,/

Ring out the thousand wars of old,/  Ring in the thousand years of peace.

천년의 전쟁을 울려라,/ 천년의 평화를 울려라.

I'm not sure what the poet meant  when he wrote this, but in 2020,  

시인이 이 글을 쓸 때 무엇을 의미했는지 잘 모르겠지만 2020년에는

I believe the foul disease is the coronavirus.

그 역겨운 질병이 코로나바이러스라고 생각합니다.

"Lust" is desire, so I think the idea  here is to reduce our desire for money  

"색욕"은 욕망이므로 여기에서 아이디어는 돈과 전쟁에 대한 욕망을 줄이고

and war, and instead aim for peace.

대신 평화를 목표로 하는 것이라고 생각합니다.

Ring in the valiant man and  free,/ The larger heart,  

용감하고 자유롭게,/ 더 큰 마음으로, 더

the kindlier hand;/ Ring out the darkness of  the land,/ Ring in the Christ that is to be.

친절한 손으로,/ 이 땅의 어둠을 울리고 ,/ 앞으로 있을 그리스도 안에서 울려라.

"Valiant" is brave. In my opinion, Christ here  doesn't have to be a Christian concept. It's  

"Valiant"는 용감합니다. 내 생각에 여기에서 그리스도는 기독교적 개념일 필요가 없습니다.

probably more about a savior. Right now our world  is suffering, and we need the kind of leaders,  

아마도 구세주에 관한 것일 것입니다. 지금 우리의 세계는 고난을 겪고 있으며,

not just political, who will guide our  countries and our society out of dark times.

우리 나라와 사회를 어두운 시대에서 벗어날 수 있도록 정치적 지도자뿐만 아니라 지도자가 필요합니다. 이제

i'll read the poem once more  now from beginning to end.
