Be Supposed To: Form, Meaning, Use & Pronunciation

healthier choices, so I'm eating fewer sweets.  We're not supposed to eat a lot of sugar.

Right? But we just had a holiday weekend,  and I decided to make a special dessert.

I found a recipe, and since this was a last-minute  decision, I had to use what I had in the house.

I was supposed to use 16 ounces of canned  pumpkin, but the can only had 15 ounces.

What do I mean when I say, "We're not supposed  to eat a lot of sugar"? We can't eat it.

"Be supposed to" is closest in meaning to  "should." When I say we're not supposed

to eat a lot of sugar, I'm saying  we shouldn't eat a lot of sugar.

"Should" is a modal verb. "Be supposed  to" is what some call a modal-like verb

or semi-modal. The modal verb "should" doesn't  change form to agree in number with the subject

or reflect tense, meaning time. But "be supposed  to" starts with "be." We can use: am, are, is,

was, and were to agree with the subject and  show tense. "We're not supposed to eat a lot

of sugar" means in general we shouldn't  do this. It's true now and all the time.

Let's study "be supposed to"  more carefully. As your teacher,

"Be supposed to" is followed by  the base verb. "Be" changes form,

but the rest of the verb doesn't. We can use "be  supposed to" for expectations that are not met.

And note my pronunciation. "To" reduces.  It sounds more like /tə/. Supposed to.

Stress is on "supposed" and then the base  verb: supposed to be, supposed to be.

Here's another example. I'm going to the theater  this weekend with my children, and the show is

We can use a simple present verb for a  scheduled event in the future. The show

is supposed to start at 8. We can use "be  supposed to" for intentions that are not

carried out. I was supposed to do my morning  stretches, but I was in a rush, so I didn't.

Let me offer a few more examples.

This past expectation was not met. You can't leave  now. You're supposed to wait until the class ends.

We can make "be supposed to" negative with "not,"  and we do this for actions that are not allowed

or that are not generally acceptable. You're  not supposed to ask a woman about her age.

We can use "be supposed to"  for commonly held beliefs  

that may not prove to be true. For example, many  people say that dogs are supposed to love water,
