Be Supposed To: Form, Meaning, Use & Pronunciation

What do I mean when I say, "We're not supposed  to eat a lot of sugar"? We can't eat it.

We shouldn't eat it. We might eat it.

"Be supposed to" is closest in meaning to  "should." When I say we're not supposed

to eat a lot of sugar, I'm saying  we shouldn't eat a lot of sugar.

"Should" is a modal verb. "Be supposed  to" is what some call a modal-like verb  

"Debería" es un verbo modal. "Se supone que" es lo que algunos llaman un verbo

or semi-modal. The modal verb "should" doesn't  change form to agree in number with the subject  

modal o semimodal. El verbo modal "debería" no cambia de forma para concordar en número con el sujeto

or reflect tense, meaning time. But "be supposed  to" starts with "be." We can use: am, are, is,

was, and were to agree with the subject and  show tense. "We're not supposed to eat a lot

"Be supposed to" is followed by  the base verb. "Be" changes form,

but the rest of the verb doesn't. We can use "be  supposed to" for expectations that are not met.

And note my pronunciation. "To" reduces.  It sounds more like /tə/. Supposed to.

Stress is on "supposed" and then the base  verb: supposed to be, supposed to be.

We use "be supposed to for expectations according  to a schedule or a procedure. Remember how I was

Here's another example. I'm going to the theater  this weekend with my children, and the show is

These shows never start on time. Note how my  examples can be for the past or the future.

We can use a simple present verb for a  scheduled event in the future. The show

Let me offer a few more examples.

We can make "be supposed to" negative with "not,"  and we do this for actions that are not allowed

I'm saying something should have been in progress. The action should have been happening.
