How to Ace a Job Inteview👍3 Tips from a U.S. Recruiter💼Business English

Hi everyone! It's Jennifer here with another English lesson. I have a question for you.

How many job interviews have you had?

I admit it's been a long time since I've gone on a job interview, but I do remember one thing. I always prepared.

The question is -- what's the best way to prepare?

What are employers looking for?

I may not have told you, but my husband is a recruiter.

Some people call recruiters "headhunters." I'll let him explain what he does.

I'm a recruiter with retained executive search firm. Companies hire us to help them find executives.

Some people over the years have had the misconception that my husband finds jobs for people. In fact, it's the other way around.

He finds people for jobs.

Not just any people and not just any jobs. He hunts for strong candidates

who can perform executive level jobs.

So his job is to find the right people and persuade them to leave their present position for a new opportunity.

It's no easy feat.

It's not an easy task.

So between the two of us, he's the better person to ask for advice on job searches and job interviews.

I've been in the business for over seven years, and I have seen

thousands and thousands of resumes. And I've interviewed hundreds and hundreds of executives.

The reason companies hire us is because they want us to find

candidates with a phenomenal track record of

delivering value.

Asked my husband to give three tips that would be useful for any job seeker.

Even if you're not currently looking for new work, I invite you to listen. You'll likely pick up some new expressions.

Yeah. The first tip is do a lot of research before you go on an interview. Be prepared to ask

questions about the business, recent developments, and

obviously the position that you're interviewing for. A great question to ask:

How would you describe the success of this hire one year to three years out?

Did you hear how he used the word "hire"?

He said "the success of this hire."

So "hire" can be a noun or a verb.

Companies can hire a person, and companies can talk about a new hire or the need to train new hires.

Yeah. Tip number two is

keep in mind when

interviewing and

describing your experience,

it is not about

what you did or what you do. It is all about how well you did this.

Okay? Make sure that you highlight your

achievements. Make sure you convey the message that you work met or exceeded expectations.

When you highlight something, you emphasize it or call people's attention to it.

My husband recommends highlighting your achievements.

As my husband has told me, he looks for people who have already had success

and who have the ability to bring success to a new company.

So an important tip is to highlight your track record: what have you achieved, your list of accomplishments.

Employers want someone with a good track record.

Recruiters search for people with a proven track record in a particular industry.

Do you have a successful track record?

Tip number three is if you are still interested in the position after the first meeting,

make sure you follow up with a thank you note.

My husband emphasized the importance of follow-up. That refers to the actions you do after the interview

to increase your chances of getting the job.

You can follow up with a thank you note. You can follow up by expressing your interest.

So hopefully these tips will help you ace your next job interview.

When you ace something, you do very well. You can ace a test,

ace an exam, or ace a job interview.

And by the way,

I hope hearing my husband reassures many of you that it's possible to have a successful career in an English-speaking

country or an English-speaking environment as a non-native speaker.

Having a slight accent won't hold you back.

As long as you have the skills and the track record to demonstrate your

potential, a new employer will see you as a strong candidate for a job.
