Spring IDIOMS and Sayings - English Vocabulary

It may be hard to believe that it's April,

because there's still snow on the ground

and I'm wearing my winter coat.

But that's how spring usually comes to New England.

The first month of spring is March.

And we say, "In like a lion, out like a lamb."

So the weather in March can still be harsh.

We have snowstorms.

But by the end of the month, it does grow mild.

The weather becomes warmer.

In April we usually expect lots of rain,

so we have the saying, "April showers bring May Flowers."

Well, with all this snow, I don't know

when we're going to see flowers,

but I do want it to rain because the rain helps

melt all of this remaining snow.

As the weather grows warmer, we usually get in a happy mood.

So we have some expressions related to this change of mood.

The first is "a spring in one's step."

If you have a spring in your step

or if you walk with a spring in your step,

you're walking with this happy feeling.

You have a little excitement.

It's positive energy.

He's walking with a spring in his step.

"Spring" as a verb is irregular.

spring - sprang - sprung

Those are the three forms.

And "spring" can mean to bounce, to jump.

That's why we also have the expression "to spring into action."

If someone springs into action,

They're ready to move. They're ready to jump into action.

A person or a group of people can spring into action

to get something done.

Now as I said, as spring comes, it gets warmer

and we usually become happier.

Some people have so much excitement,

we joke and say they have spring fever.

Children - especially in May when it's closer to summer vacation -

...they have spring fever,

and then the teachers have to deal with that.
