So what makes these messages informal and friendly?

But we generally use standard spelling and more words.

An email message is a bit like voicemail.

It's conversational in nature, but brief.

Here are some possible ways to start an informal email.

Notice all the variation with punctuation marks.

You'll also see: "Hey Heather!"

Now let me show you some informal closings.

Obviously, these last three are more affectionate,

and you'll decide who to send your love, hugs, and kisses to.

In an informal email, you can use only your initial at the end.

But personally I don't think it takes that much energy

to finish typing your name.

However, in quick exchanges where there's a lot of back and forth

under the same subject heading,

you can skip the greeting, closing, and signature to save time.

In this final reply, there's no closing and there's no signature.

But it's clear who's writing who.

Throughout this exchange the tone remains friendly.

The focus is on a quick exchange of information.
