Copying (cc'ing) Others on Email in English - Tips and Useful Phrases

If you want to write better emails in English,

you can learn a lot just by looking at good models,

like Diane's message.

First, she uses a concise subject heading.

This is a business email. She keeps the same tone throughout.

It's polite but friendly.

She mentions her assistant, Isaac.

So one thing she needs to do is copy him on this message -

or cc him.

So Diane is cc'ing Isaac to keep him informed.

When you write email a good thing to do

before you click send is to check and make sure

you have all the correct recipients listed and copied.

Sometimes we write to one person, but we want others

to be aware of the situation.

That's when we copy them on a message, or we cc them -

as you saw in the model.

For more formal email, you might use one of these statements.

And here are some less formal statements you may write

or even say in conversation.

So notice how we use CC as a verb.

Cc me. I cc'd you.

We form the past tense with apostrophe D ('d).

Here's one more thing you could ask.

We might also cc someone

if we're introducing one person to another.

Let's look at a model.

Subject: Contact for setting up online store

Donna still needs to include Niles,

so she'll cc him.

And now that she's done that,

Donna's ready to send the message off to Julia.
