Today we're going to compare English pronunciation.

American English pronunciation and

Australian English pronunciation.

And since yesterday was International Tongue Twister Day

I thought I would challenge one of my favorite

Australians to a little tongue twister challenge

so we could compare our accents.

What is a tongue twister?

A tongue twister is a sequence of words or sounds,

typically of an alliterative kind,

that are difficult to pronounce quickly and correctly,

as, for example, tie twine to three tree twigs.

I'd like to introduce you to Emma from mmmEnglish.

- Hey, I'm Emma from mmmEnglish.

I'm looking forward to twisting my tongue

with you today.

- Emma, are you up for a tongue twister challenge?

- Yes, I think I'm ready.

- Fantastic, so I'm going to challenge you

with three tongue twisters.

I'll say them first, so that you can here my American accent

and then I'll talk about some differences between

how I say these tongue twisters and how Emma says them.

But let's see if we can manage to say these

without tripping up on these tongue twisters.

It's quite difficult to say these, especially quickly.

so that you can see Emma's tongue twister challenge for me.

So let's begin with the tongue twister challenge.

Are you ready Emma?

- Gabby, I hereby accept your challenge.

- Okay, number one

rolling red wagons.

Rolling red, rolling red, rolling red wagons.

Your turn.

- Rolling red wagons.

Rolling red wagons, rolling red wagons, rolling red wagons.

(laughing)

- Great job, okay, number two:

the 33 thieves thought that they thrilled the throne

throughout Thursday.

That's a lot of TH sounds.

- The 33 thieves thought that they thrilled the throne

throughout Thursday.

The 33 thieves thought that they thrilled the throne

throughout Thursday.

The 33 thieves thought that they through the--

(stuttering)

The 33 thieves thought that they thrilled the throne

throughout Thursday.

- Amazing, okay, last one, this is a classic.

Peter Piper picked a pepple--

(sighing)

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

There we go.

- Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

(laughing)

- Amazing.

Let's take a quickly look at pronunciation differences

between the way I say these tongue twisters

and the way that Emma says them.

As I mentioned, I'm from the US, I speak American English

and Emma is from Australia so her accent is Australian.

And did you notice any differences?

Maybe you can tell me

in the comments if you already noticed some.

But let me highlight what I noticed.

The word thought, I say thought.

It's a sound that I produce in the back of mouth, thought.

Emma produces it a bit more in the front of her mouth,

thought.

- Thought, thought, thought.

- And similarly, throughout.

I say this word a bit farther back in my mouth,

throughout, and Emma say's throughout,

a bit more in the front of her mouth.

So I think if you want to sound more Australian

you would pronounce these vowel sounds

a bit farther forward in your mouth,

a bit more closed.

Whereas I say them a bit more open,

as an American English speaker.

- Throughout, throughout, throughout.

- Now, finally, we have the last tongue twister to analyze.

This is very interesting, we have words like Peter

and Peppers, whereas in American English I fully

pronounce the er sound at end of a word.

In Australian English, this is a clear marker

of Australian English, you do not.

You instead say, ah.

For example, Pet-ah, I'm not sure if I'm doing a good

Australian accent here, but listen to how Emma says it.

- Pet-ah pip-ah picked a peck of pickled pepp-ahs.

Pet-ah pip-ah picked a peck of pickled pepp-ahs.

Pet-ah pip-ah picked a peck of pickled pepp-ahs.

- It's more like Pet-ah and not Pet-er, right?

Also, pepp-ahs and not pepp-ers.

So, I think that we have found several differences

between American and Australian English.

And I had fun with the tongue twisters, didn't you?
